What will happen when the Queen dies???

Just pondering after Phillips death.

My view is the country will lose a lot of it's stability for a period of time, and I say that as a closeted Republican. She's all anyone alive has really ever known. It will be quite a time of massive change that's for certain.

The national anthem, money, names like HMRC - Will these all change overnight??

She's all anyone alive has really ever known.

I don't know about anyone else, but she isn't 'all I've ever known'. That's a little melodramatic! She has been queen all my life though.

When she dies there will be a lot of hoohah, pomp and ceremony. The TV will talk of little else for days if not weeks. But thankfully we have alternatives to terrestrial television these days. Other than that? It will be life as normal.

There'll be much debate about the Monarchy. After considerable hand wrenching it will be realised that nobody wants an elected President changed every four years and backed by self interested sponsors and lobbyists. We'll leave all that to the US. Some Commonwealth countries will become Republics only to later realise their loss. They'll miss the quiet, efficient, fuss free competence of the Monarchy and regret going for primping and posturing Presidents who are beholden to their political masters.

TrixieMixie · 16/04/2021 17:50

What will happen when the Queen dies? Charles will be King if he is still alive by then. If not, William. Not much other than that and the big hullaballoo for a few days/weeks. Commonwealth will be affected and some countries eg Australia may want to cut their remaining ties with our monarchy as that attachment has been dependent on the Queen as a person. But the Commonwealth is waning as an institution anyway. It will feel a bit strange to lose part of the backdrop to our lives, a slight loss of stability. We will feel sad, most people only a bit, a few people will go nutty. Bit like any big Royal event. HMRC will still be HMRC but it will stand for His Majesty not Her Majesty! On the other hand I could be wrong. There might be a coup d'etat led by Jeremy Corbyn and Meghan Markle. Or Macron could invade and take back Britain for France.

Tistheseason17 · 16/04/2021 17:51

Can't say I look at the pics on coins or notes- just their shape, colour and value!

I think the Queen will also die soon after.

As long as the RF bring in tourists and spending and has no actual impact on govt other than being a "tradition" figurehead, I'm OK with that. They do a lot of supporting charities and opening events - without them it would be politicians doing that and tucking into free lunches etc and I trust politicians much less 😂 I'm sure it's documented somewhere that the RF costs us personally £1 each per year and brings in £billions in revenue.

HerculesMulligann · 16/04/2021 17:53

Why on earth would anything change, unless you personally know the individual who has died? Has the death of Philip last week changed your life in any material way? (other than not being able to watch scheduled tv programmes last Friday!).

marktayloruk · 16/04/2021 17:54

As a devout monarchist I hope she lives for many years. I also hope that all republicans have the decency to keep their disloyal mouths shut.

Why are republicans 'disloyal'?

Personally I think the death of QE2 would be the perfect opportunity to end the whole embarrassing, anachronistic thing full stop. I've no ill will towards the Queen or indeed any of her family, and I'd wish them all well in their new endeavours. But the monarchy has absolutely no place in modern society.

Scubadivinginabox · 16/04/2021 17:58

Honestly? I really couldn't care less. Civil servants sent home because of Prince Philip's passing is ridiculous. We really don't need the Royal family. They bring in tourism but really have no other value.

They don't even do that, really. Versailles' lack of royalty hasn't stopped the visitors flooding in! And it's not like Queenie does hourly magic shows on the balcony of Buckingham Palace to entertain tourists Grin

People would pay a fortune to see the rooms where the RF eat, slept and went to the toilet (and all the art and antiques, of course). Ditch the monarchy, open up all the royal palaces to tourists and revenue would increase massively.

PrelovedWithValue · 16/04/2021 18:05

What the what now? What exactly are people that aren't interested in the monarchy being disloyal to? A family with more public scandal than any other that I'm aware of, that are quite happy to live luxuriously at the taxpayers expense while even working people are struggling with poverty. They are just ordinary people that are happy to take advantage of the fact they were born into a line that way back managed, by hook or by crook, secure themselves into a cushy number.

Plumbuddle · 16/04/2021 18:07

@GizmoBasil

Some people will go absoutely mad when the Queen dies

Agreed, I worry it will be on the scale of Diana, though hopefully not as I think a lot of that was because it was so unexpected.

I do think though that people will absolutely try to out do each other with how much it's effected them. Confused

EerieSilence · 16/04/2021 18:13

I assume she's going to get a proper funeral, considering she's a Queen.
Charles will become the King.
The rest is all open. The anthem will obviously have to be changed, considering neither Camilla nor Kate apply.

EerieSilence · 16/04/2021 18:14

@marktayloruk I hope you realise that having different opinions on the state - should it be a monarchy or a republic has zero to do with loyalty to your own country.

Alsohuman · 16/04/2021 18:21

Clearly it does and not just in this country.

pam290358 · 16/04/2021 18:25

@itsgettingweird. I like this idea - we could have queen Linda or queen Janet !! Or how about King Darren or King Alan !!

Just because a thing exists, it doesn't mean there's a need for it.

@Rukaya

In what sense?
I think there will be no normal tv for at least a week and there will be endless faux mourning with a side of jingoism. But nothing that matters will change.

This - what Rukaya said will happen. We’ll be force fed wailing and mourning on the main British TV channels, but I doubt many will watch much of it!
Alsohuman · 16/04/2021 18:33

Just because a thing exists, it doesn't mean there's a need for it.

There are many things we don’t need. They’re different for everyone. Once again, there’s a place for a monarchy in this country, just like the Netherlands, Denmark and Spain.

SarahBellam · 16/04/2021 18:33

Christ, the Daily Express will wank itself into a coma.

What, like Covid-19, the EDL and equivalents, and fly-tipping?
IntermittentParps · 16/04/2021 18:53

It'll be the Queen is dead, long live the King.
Yeah, I came on to say this. There will be things in place that have been in the planning for years. Say what else you like about the institution of the RF, when it comes to the big stuff it runs like clockwork.

There might possibly be riots about the amount of telly and radio coverage though, if Phil's death is anything to go by.

Courgetteandbeans · 16/04/2021 18:54

@Honeybobbin

Why would hmrc change? Or HM anything? New coins would be phased in. I remember coins with king George on them and I wasn't born until the 80s!
You must have been looking at old coins as we went metric in 197something and the Queen was on them.
ListeningQuietly · 16/04/2021 19:03

You must have been looking at old coins as we went metric in 197something and the Queen was on them.
But shillings were used as 5p coins for years and they had George on them.

Scotland32 · 16/04/2021 19:04

The military, BBC and every other body you can think of have had it all planned for literally YEARS. My friend works for Radio 1 and they have regular planning meetings about it. It might feel weird to us, but all the logistics are all ready to be enacted at a moment’s notice. Sad as it will be, it’s all planned.
Plus, as with Prince P, the post-death interviews/chats with their children have likely already been recorded. That’s the bit I find a bit weird - but it’s necessary....

Plumbuddle · 16/04/2021 19:24

@Bluntness100

I’m not disputing Charles has the best medical care like the rest of his family or that he doesn’t have longevity in his genes

I am saying he’s 72 years old and has a florid complexion, which indicates a health issue, I’d guess he’s got blood pressure issues. But clearly don’t know. Other than something is causing it. High blood pressure can lead to other significant health issues that can be fatal. Hopefully not, I’m just saying out thr two, the queen looks healthier. No way round it.

Lockdown no not seen his fingers,,are they swollen?

Yes, very much so, what does that mean then?
