What will happen when the Queen dies???

Just pondering after Phillips death.

My view is the country will lose a lot of it's stability for a period of time, and I say that as a closeted Republican. She's all anyone alive has really ever known. It will be quite a time of massive change that's for certain.

The national anthem, money, names like HMRC - Will these all change overnight??

@Lockdownbear

Go you Magi84, brilliant that you're on MN. I must admit I was thinking the same thing, never thinking anyone beyond retirement could possibly be on MN!
Lots of older people are on here due to the links with Gransnet.
Nith · 16/04/2021 08:36

Male PM, King, male president... no more Queen to temper the idea of women being in power.

I'd say there's a pretty reasonable chance of at least having a female president of the US within the next four years, so no need to give up hope yet. And I really wouldn't ignore people like Merkel and Ardern.

Rukaya · 16/04/2021 08:37

I suspect that when the queen dies it will affect us a whole lot more than we think it will. It's huge for all of us

It won't be huge for all of us. The people who it will be a big deal for need to understand that an awful lot of people simply don't care. And that doesn't make us bad people. She's just another human being, she is no way anymore special to me (and many others) than any other human being, just because she happened to be born into the life she was.
I care no more or less about the Queen dying than any other elderly lady dying, as in I think its sad for their families but it has no impact or importance on me at all.

Lockdownbear · 16/04/2021 08:41

Why not? Experience of my parents and ILs mixing with technology and struggling with it. Stereotyping I know!

Just so the young ones understand - computers have been around for at least 50 years. I learned 'Basic' programming at school in the early 1970s and did a programming course as part of my studies at university in 1975. I worked for a bank for a while before I went to university in 1973 - there were computer terminals there too, albeit not anything like the PCs or tablets that everyone has today.

Peregrina · 16/04/2021 09:46

I too am past retirement age and did a programming course at University in 1970-71. In FORTRAN , which is still used in science, on punched cards. Oh and you had to say how much paper you needed. Otherwise, you would go and collect your output the next morning and find only a header sheet.

Peregrina · 16/04/2021 09:59

Even mobile phones came in about 30 years ago now.

SarsonsWine · 16/04/2021 10:11

Loads of older people are on here and have never used Gransnet.

I'm older than the majority. I started a career in IT in the 1970s and have done many many things that a lot of you would be surprised about as I'm female and older. When I started with my career in computing a lot of you weren't thought of and in a lot of cases your parents weren't either if my colleagues are anything to go by.

Maireas · 16/04/2021 10:43

I'm just wondering what some people imagine the cut off age fo mumsnet is?

I used to go to a computing club at my daughters secondary school held by the head of maths. We worked away on tiny little zx spectrums , then at the end of the session we helped him to load them onto a wonky old tea trolley to be carefully locked up in a strong room. I can remember going to IT sessions at the Institute at London University where we watched the future of education (in black and white with pixel graphics) open mouthed.

@GrownUpBeans

For me it will be the end of an era and time for a republic.
I agree wholeheartedly!
SenecaFallsRedux · 16/04/2021 12:28

I joined well before Gransnet came on the scene. I'm also well past retirement age, but still working. The main incentive for me to retire is to be able to travel, so until that's possible, I might as well keep working.

As for queens, there won't be one in the UK for a long time after Elizabeth dies, but there are several on the horizon in Europe: the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, Belgium, and Spain all have women or girls who are heirs apparent (or in the case of Norway, heir apparent to the heir, or in the case of Spain, a girl highly unlikely to be displaced by a brother.) This, of course, assumes that these countries continue to be monarchies.

orangegina · 16/04/2021 12:41

Life will go on as normal

The sun still rises, the earth still turns, we still have our jobs and lives. She's just one human

Would would HMRC change? Money does not suddenly change like that. Obvs

The only that will change will be the bloody Tv schedules

StayingHere · 16/04/2021 12:45

I think there will be a lot of news coverage, a very grand funeral and some very public mourning. Then Charles will become king and life will go on, like it always does.

GizmoBasil · 16/04/2021 14:43

@orangegina no need to be sassy Hmm

HMRC is currently HER majesty's revenue and customs so obviously that would change.

It would be His Majesty’s Revenue and Customs so still HMRC. 🤷‍♀️

BarbaraofSeville · 16/04/2021 14:47

As I pointed out upthread, it's actually HM Revenue and Customs. The word HER does not appear on their branding or website.

It's official name is HM revenue and customs so I don't think it will have to change (and I'm assuming this is why it's called that).

Charles becomes King immediately, 'the Queen has died, long live the King' Then the funeral, then he'll have a Coronation.

King George who abdicated did so in between becoming King and the Coronation.

TieYourTrampolineDownSport · 16/04/2021 17:35

The BBC will shut down for a month!! Apart from them everything will go on as usual. We might get an extra bank holiday! Plenty of people alive who were around in the early 50s!! My own parents included.

Nobu · 16/04/2021 17:38

Fingers crossed

Nobu · 16/04/2021 17:42

Me too.

Annie202 · 16/04/2021 17:43

Hopefully it will be the beginning of the end...

jules0607 · 16/04/2021 17:43

There will only be programs about the Queen broadcast on all channels for a month

Nobu · 16/04/2021 17:43

Exactly
