What will happen when the Queen dies???

Just pondering after Phillips death.

My view is the country will lose a lot of it's stability for a period of time, and I say that as a closeted Republican. She's all anyone alive has really ever known. It will be quite a time of massive change that's for certain.

The national anthem, money, names like HMRC - Will these all change overnight??

Also, unless a change were made, a monarch's eldest daughter, who would be heir apparent, could not be Duchess of Cornwall in her own right. But the monarch could make an eldest daughter Princess of Wales in her own right. (I think).

I assume the issue with giving the Cornwall and Wales titles to females previously is because they were never heir apparents, only heir presumptive.

Whereas now, if George has a daughter she’ll be his heir apparent so there’s no reason for her not to be Princess of Wales in her own right.

JustLyra · 15/04/2021 23:59

I wonder why, given he clearly wasn’t going to have more children, George VI never made the then Princess Elizabeth Princess of Wales?

Maybe with all the unsettling stuff with EVIII just wasn’t the time to do something new?

OliverBabish · 16/04/2021 00:06

It will be a moment when the Queen dies as she has been a constant but I don’t think I’ll care at all for King Charles (or whatever name he decides on). It feels like all of that stuff belongs to a different era now.

Touchmybum · 16/04/2021 00:27

Personally, I will be gutted when the Queen passes away and I hope she has some years still ahead of her!

CorianderBee · 16/04/2021 00:29

Operation London Bridge. Funeral, period of mourning, crown Charles.

In our daily lives nothing will change bar the interruptions of the funeral etc and the news and a few documentary's.

I don't know anyone who relies specifically on the Queen for moral, order or anything else on the sort.

She is a wonderful, hardworking, devoted relic.

CorianderBee · 16/04/2021 00:34

I don't even get Bank Holidays off so no change for me there

CorianderBee · 16/04/2021 00:43

I do find it weird that I'll likely never live to see another Queen

CorianderBee · 16/04/2021 00:47

I will be sad that the image of a woman as a power head will be gone for my kids.

Male PM, King, male president... no more Queen to temper the idea of women being in power.

That's all I'll be sad about though. My children seeing a King rather than a Queen doing a decent job of it.

Lockdownbear · 16/04/2021 00:47

Do you think it would be better for Charles to formally become Prince Regent to smooth the transition later.
He must be doing a chunk of her role anyway.

AnotherSunrise · 16/04/2021 00:53

No normal tv for a month...

SenecaFallsRedux · 16/04/2021 00:59

I assume the issue with giving the Cornwall and Wales titles to females previously is because they were never heir apparents, only heir presumptive.

Under current rules, the Dukedom of Cornwall has to be held by the monarch's eldest son. So there is no current provision for it to be held by a woman, even if she is the heir. There is no rule (that I am aware of) that would prevent a monarch from making a female heir Princess of Wales in her own right.

I think that one reason George VI did not make Elizabeth PoW is that she was not the heir apparent, even though chances of her being supplanted by a brother were slim and none as she grew older.

SenecaFallsRedux · 16/04/2021 01:08

There has actually been one female heir apparent. When William and Mary became joint monarchs, Mary had a superior claim to the throne as the daughter of James II and VII (William was the son of James’s sister), and William's secondary position in the succession was recognized in the settlement which provided that if Mary died first and William remarried, any potential children with a second wife would be after Queen Mary’s sister, Anne, in the succession, thus making her, after Mary's death, the only female Heir Apparent in British history.

@duvetdreaming

The national anthem will change, stamps will change.

All fun things will close and there will be nothing on TV for a bit, maybe until the funeral has happened. Music on radio stations will be subject to restrictions. I can't imagine Freddy Mercury belting out 'Who wants to live for ever' or 'Another one bites the dust' on any radio station who wants to keep their licence.

Last Friday, one radio station interrupted Elton John singing I'm Still Standing to tell us that Philip, er, wasn't ...........
Lille4 · 16/04/2021 04:54

Hopefully that'll be the start of the decline of the monarchy 😬 Can't believe such a thing exists in this day and age 🤷🏾‍♀️

Magi84 · 16/04/2021 05:56

Yes I am really 88 ... somebody asked this earlier so I am a little late in replying.

midsomermurderess · 16/04/2021 05:59

Why three question marks?

Springisspringing2 · 16/04/2021 06:01

Very true re Queen part actually... Being female role model, I hadn't thought about that...

It's going to be a huge historical moment when she leaves us, lying in state, state funeral.. The incredible era she's precided over, a coronation!!
Zadok the preist...

Magi84 · 16/04/2021 06:05

@Antiqueanniesmagiclanternshow sorry I did not tag you properly for my reply but as you see I am 88. I have to say my husband is 94 and vaguely remembers George V giving his Christmas message. Radio of course.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 16/04/2021 06:07

@jacintabakes

Good riddance if you ask me.
What a nasty thing to say.
Antiqueanniesmagiclanternshow · 16/04/2021 07:36

@Magi84 please forgive me if i come across as patronising or condescending. I couldn't believe it because you are come across as being really youthful and obviously your mastery of technology is fab and i am obviously exposing all my unconscious prejudices! I'm sorry!

ImAncient · 16/04/2021 07:46

Thank you to pp for explaining the King mother title. I love all these sorts of details.

Magi84 · 16/04/2021 08:03

@Antiqueanniesmagiclanternshow Thank you. I took it as a compliment not at all condescending. Not sure I am a hotshot with the technology but I get there in the end. The Grandkids keep me on my toes

Lockdownbear · 16/04/2021 08:11

Go you Magi84, brilliant that you're on MN. I must admit I was thinking the same thing, never thinking anyone beyond retirement could possibly be on MN!
