What will happen when the Queen dies???

Just pondering after Phillips death.

My view is the country will lose a lot of it's stability for a period of time, and I say that as a closeted Republican. She's all anyone alive has really ever known. It will be quite a time of massive change that's for certain.

The national anthem, money, names like HMRC - Will these all change overnight??

Dowager - Had to Google that. New word for me. This is a very educational thread 👍

TheFourOhFour · 15/04/2021 21:58

@suk44

The Daily Mail/Express will produce a 500 page special edition commemorative pullout.

Queen Mary and Queen Alexandra were very occasionally referred to as the Queen Mother, but it wasn't needed so much as they were distinguishable by their names.

When exactly though? Are there any records of its being used as a title before 1952?

Peregrina · 15/04/2021 22:01

OK I see the title was used in the Ottoman Empire.

The is mention of Queen Mary as the Queen Mother in the press from back then as well, obviously though there was much less press coverage.

When it came up the last time someone had a good link to details of a few mentions of Mary, but I can't remember who.

One thing I learned from that time was that it's pretty much only the press and public that ever used the QEQM title. She remained Queen Elizabeth to the court because the Queen is "The Queen".

ImAncient · 15/04/2021 22:07

Did the Queen mother title start with Margaret Beaufort? She was called The King’s Mother?

3Britnee · 15/04/2021 22:09

@Honeybobbin

Why would hmrc change? Or HM anything? New coins would be phased in. I remember coins with king George on them and I wasn't born until the 80s!
What happen if all the pronoun shit goes too far and gets a real foothold. HM anything will be fucked.

No, to be the Queen Mother you have to have been the Queen consort and the mother of the current King or Queen.
youvegottenminuteslynn · 15/04/2021 22:12

If Charles ever changes to they/them pronouns there will be a hell of a lot more work for HMRC to do... or TMRC as it would be known then Grin

Pixxie7 · 15/04/2021 22:12

I doubt it will make a lot of difference to the average person on the street.

The Smiths will go to number one in the charts.

Frazzled2207 · 15/04/2021 22:15

@Maireas

Archie was born to an American citizen though. I'll have to look that one up! Intriguing.
Meghan went through the process to become British. Strictly speaking she is I expect dual citizen now or UK and US. Would be tricky to renounce US citizenship and live there!
Peregrina · 15/04/2021 22:17

The Dutch do this differently - the Queens who have abdicated, in my lifetime this was Juliana and Beatrix, both took the title Princess, even though they had different names so there was no confusion as to who was who.

Maireas · 15/04/2021 22:17

No, Meghan never became British.

RickiTarr · 15/04/2021 22:23

@Esse321

So Charles will change his name because its bad luck to reign as Charles? seems a bit superstitious - and why call him Charles in the first place knowing he would have to change it Hmm
I read that DoE chose his first name because he wanted to call him Charlie, and the Queen let him have his way because the courtiers weren’t letting the DC have the surname Mountbatten.
Moonwhite · 15/04/2021 22:26

I think it might be the cue - after a polite mourning period - for some countries to leave the commonwealth. And for stronger discussion about whether we need a monarchy.

The Queen is a grandmother figure, she's been around a long time and she seems to command a lot of respect. She's the last "proper" monarch of this country really. There is no mystery or separateness about William or even Charles (arguably, even less Charles.) They're going to cost us a lot of money over the next decade or so with state funerals, coronations, changing the money and stamps twice. The economy will have to be very strong for that not to aggravate people.

RickiTarr · 15/04/2021 22:26

She wasn’t here long enough to qualify for UK citizenship. So she’s only ever held US nationality.

It's never really been a huge issue. It was quite unusual to have three Queens, as we did for a while. It was only confusing because of two Queen Elizabeths

I think perhaps had everyone realised that the then Duke and Duchess of York were going to become King and Queen then it might have been suggested that their eldest not be called Elizabeth (although if they had known, they'd probably have been pressured to have more children in the hope of a boy as well).

Tippexy · 15/04/2021 22:28

I just hope she doesn’t die before the extra bank holidays we’re getting next year... Blush

SenecaFallsRedux · 15/04/2021 22:29

your distant cousin

The Kents are not all that distant from Philip. The Duke of Kent, Prince Michael and Princess Alexandra are his first cousins once removed. Their mother, Princess Marina of Greece and Denmark was Philip's first cousin.

SarsonsWine · 15/04/2021 22:29
@viques I'm sorry, I'm confused too. You say you've lived through three monarchs, King George (the third monarch away) died in 1936. So even saying you were born in 1936, that WOULD make you 85.
The Queen's father died in the 1950s. I read it as @Viques meaning that Charles would be her 3rd monarch.

Peregrina · 15/04/2021 22:32

But then I wonder why the QM didn't press her to take one of her other names?

JustLyra · 15/04/2021 22:33

Also I think the Queen seems to (understandably as it's not a nice word) dislike the word Dowager.

She allowed/encouraged Princess Marina to be known as HRH Princess Marina, Duchess of Kent, rather than HRH The Dowager Duchess of Kent when she was widowed young. Although Marina was a Greek Princess it wasn't an automatic thing.

She also did the same when the Duke of Gloucester died and she allowed her Aunt to be HRH Princess Alice, Duchess of Gloucester, rather than Dowager Duchess.

Peregrina · 15/04/2021 22:34

Who knew that they would trot out some German relatives for the funeral?
