What will happen when the Queen dies???

Just pondering after Phillips death.

My view is the country will lose a lot of it's stability for a period of time, and I say that as a closeted Republican. She's all anyone alive has really ever known. It will be quite a time of massive change that's for certain.

The national anthem, money, names like HMRC - Will these all change overnight??

@Hoggleludo

Operation London Bridge is started

We spend 12 days in mourning. The bbc must dedicate their shows to the queen. There’s a ton of stuff. Google it. It’s interesting

I reckon they must have changed the code phrase now everybody and his dog knows about London Bridge!

@Maireas

I wonder if William will have an investiture as PoW at Caernarfon Castle? I can't see it, somehow, but it's possible.
I doubt it.
EvenMoreFuriousVexation · 15/04/2021 19:54

It'll be a boon for Amazon Prime, Netflix, and any other streaming service savvy enough to launch an offer at the right time.

The postponement of the Masterchef final this week was an abomination. I suppose there's something in the bloody BBC charter that requires them to give these useless articles airtime but does it really have to fuck with my fancy food fix?

SnuggleWuggle · 15/04/2021 19:58

Royal Mail changed their plates for new post boxes to steel ones that are added on rather than ones that are ingrained in the design (eg the ER) partly so that when the queen dies it’ll be easier to just change the settings for the steel plates that are attached, rather than the manufacture design of the whole box...

@SenecaFallsRedux

The Coronation was dead boring though.

I thought it was wonderful. I also watched it as a small child on a tiny black and white TV. It was the beginning of my interest in British history and the British RF.

By the way, I hope people on this thread are suitably impressed that there are those of us on MN who saw the coronation in real time. Smile

I’m younger but have enjoyed watching it several times on YouTube.

Sad as I would be about the death of the Queen, as and when it happens, I’m excited to think that I will see at least one Coronation in my lifetime.

Magi84 · 15/04/2021 20:07

I am another one who remembers the coronation in real time. In fact I have a tiny memory of George VI coronation in 1936. I was three years old and remember him and the queen coming to Edinburgh to receive the Scottish crown. My memory is simply of sitting on the pavement kerb waving my little Union Flag. 1952 I remember the announcement of his death and it certainly did entail shops, theatres and cinemas all closing. I remember that vividly as it was the day of our office outing which was a visit to the theatre and naturally we were all upset that the theatre closed and our visit abandoned.

I am not sure all that will suddenly happen again but certainly it will be a tremendous happening for the country because of the length of HM's reign. I also remember the gun salute from Edinburgh castle when Prince Charles was born counting the number as it would tell us whether it was a boy or girl. Don't think he'll change his name. The main reason George VI changed because Albert was had been almost sacred in QV's mind.

Peregrina · 15/04/2021 20:09

I can just remember the Coronation - going to a marquee for a party. I was clutching something in my hand, which I think was a bar of chocolate, which all the children had been given. We had a cup and saucer each, smashed long since.

I didn't know that was the Coronation, I was told it was when I told my DM about the memory.

Cactus1982 · 15/04/2021 20:13

Is anyone else dying to know whether or not Boris got a phone call early on Friday morning telling him that ‘Forth Bridge is Down’ like in The Crown?

Just me then..

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 15/04/2021 20:15

It's going back a bit I know but when Bodica was on her victory parade though the streets, us kids were told to keep well back from her chariot thingy.

Gladimnotcampinginthisweather · 15/04/2021 20:17

I wondered if he was jumping the gun by saying that he had turned down his invitation so s family member could attend.

MintyMabel · 15/04/2021 20:18

I’m surprised people are suggesting the fact she is old means people shouldn’t feel shock or grief. My grandma was 97 when she died. She had even been poorly in hospital. It was still a shock when mum phoned to say she’d died. She was in my life my whole life. Of course it’s awful news. The Queen has been a permanent fixture in my life too, of course it will be awful news. I won’t be wailing in the streets or be unable to function but I will be very sad.

I’ve got a holiday in a non-English speaking country planned for that week, whenever it comes. The enforced public grief-fest will be intolerable. Last weekend was bad enough.

How will that work? It’s not exactly something you can plan, book and escape the minute it is announced.

I wonder too Cactus. And if he offered to give up his seat as PM, or if the Queen had to ask him.

I don't think Charles will become King George, particularly now that his Grandson is likely to use the name. He'll never be anything other than Charles to the majority of the population anyway now.

Truelymadlydeeplysomeonesmum · 15/04/2021 20:23

Like the idea of some people on here old enough to have seen the coronation when it happened. I was feeling old the other day remembering watching Charles and Diana getting married.

Magi84 · 15/04/2021 20:24

Have decided I must be getting old as George VI was crowned 1937 not 1936. Ah well..

Truelymadlydeeplysomeonesmum · 15/04/2021 20:25

Yes the two Georges thing would get annoying. I suppose if King George was a goer then Will and Kate wouldn't have chosen that name for their kid.

Ohnomoreno · 15/04/2021 20:26

I think it'll be quite exciting to see. I am looking forward to all the pomp and circumstance.

ApplyWithin · 15/04/2021 20:30

I am oddly very worried about the Queen dying too. I think it will cause people to have an existential crisis. She’s all we’ve ever known. It will be such a significant marker of change and people don’t like change. We will all feel older overnight.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 15/04/2021 20:30

@Maireas

No just the morning, then it was back to collecting the pots of urine for the garment dyeing vats. They were piss poor days, they were indeed. Sad

Maireas · 15/04/2021 20:36

Well I hope you got a commemorative ale pot at least.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 15/04/2021 20:37

@Maireas
Oh yes, still using it.

ApplyWithin · 15/04/2021 20:39

Her late MIL, Patricia, (who inherited the title from her father as it was set up that way when he was given it) and her Aunt-in-law Lady Pamela were/are Philips cousins and he was brought up close to them

I was surprised to see Pamela Hicks wasn’t on the guest list. Perhaps she’s too frail to attend, she must be in her 90s. Another Mountbatten daughter to whom PP and HM must have been very close.

Clearly they want a family funeral but I sort of think Tindall, Mapozzi and Brooksbank could have perhaps stood down and allowed close relatives to go in their place. None of my business of course - before someone tells me so!

Maireas · 15/04/2021 20:43

I agree, particularly about Mapozzi and Brooksbank who couldn't have known him for long. No Prince or Princess Michael of Kent?

Sadsiblingatsea · 15/04/2021 20:46

I’m dreading it.
It will be massively destabilising for the country.
