My dd4 has a speech delay, she’s trying her hardest to tell me about her friend at school but she keeps saying “Sharon” and when I repeat the name she is getting angry because it’s not right! I can’t think what it could be!

Help me lol it’s driving both of us insane!

I wonder if it is Sarah N, DD teachers always include the child's second initial if there's more than one child with the same name, my daughter used to talk about her friends at school and include the initial because she was used to hearing the teacher say it that way.

OpusAnglicanum · 13/04/2021 21:43

Oh we had similar with my daughter for weeks and the child turned out to have a name that I would never have guessed in a million years.

Like a PP, we requested a class list so we could try to work it out from that. This also later helped in identifying that another child known to us as ‘Tenara’ was really called Clara.

Can you help narrow it down with her by elimination of sounds? Eg, ask her if the name has a 'Shh' like Sharon in it at all, or if it has a 'k' like Karen or does it have a 't' like Tina or Bert. Once you can get a definite sound or two the name might be easier.

Wouldlovetobeinthesun · 13/04/2021 21:50

Sharon

whatisheupto · 13/04/2021 21:52

Do you have a class photo so she can point him/her out?

ScrollingLeaves · 13/04/2021 21:52

I am sorry I have not rift but might she be telling you about ‘sharing’ with her friend?

That is something she feels is part of the friendship.

slightlydomesticated · 13/04/2021 21:53

Sounds like Sarah or Shannon to me, could it be something like Tarryn? (Not sure if the spelling but a girls name) or Tamryn?

Theredone5 · 13/04/2021 21:54

" that one"
" seven "

StarcourtMall · 13/04/2021 21:54

SoHappyToBeAMum · 13/04/2021 22:11

It sounds like she’s (perfectly!) pronouncing the name Selen??? It’s a girl’s name and could be worth trying but her teacher should be happy to help you find out, it’s very normal even without speech delays. You could ask her to take her key worker / teacher to the child and the teacher can then tell you the name for your invite list.

Redsquirrel5 · 13/04/2021 22:13

Ck / t are often mis heard / spoken. Do you have any meetings with a Speech Therapist through NHS? You need to be working on it at home too just offering the correct sound clearly and lots of praise for when she makes the correct sound. One of my boys had sh /f difficulties. DH and I still sometimes say Shiff and chips and another had the Ck / T and other sounds also had grommets at 6.

I asked about DD and she had full screening at 2 1/2 Audiometrician said she had the hearing of a dog at high frequency which explained the question I asked about RAF jets. We are on the low flying flight path. DD could hear them before I could and before any sighting. There was about 2 minutes difference and if you knew what the speed of those things travel you would realise that is quite a distance away.

Keep working on it my boys were fine by about 7 and only DS3 has slight hearing loss especially with a cold. Grown up now.

I hope you find out. Ask the teacher and TA as they will probably know. I hope she has a lovely party.😃
