What word is my speech delayed daughter saying?

My dd4 has a speech delay, she’s trying her hardest to tell me about her friend at school but she keeps saying “Sharon” and when I repeat the name she is getting angry because it’s not right! I can’t think what it could be!

Help me lol it’s driving both of us insane!

"She's wrong?"

Its perfectly possible what she thinks this child is called is something completely random and not their name, and they are actually called Emily or something

When I was about 4, I told my DP all about my new friend Boxy. Her name was actually Casey, I'd obviously known case=box and taken the synonyms a bit too far Grin

When I was about 5 there was a girl in my class called Paula and she was often unwell in school....I thought her name was Poor -la because she was always poorly.

Well done little OP's dd! You were pronouncing it perfectly. Star

How did you find out?

Ahh, listened to the second one and thought seren.

My brother had speech delay and I used to translate for him. My parents couldn’t understand him, don’t know why I always understood him.

He is 40 now and you’d never know he had any difficulties. I remember how frustrated he used to get when people didn’t understand him.

All his f’s were d’s.

My nephew also has speech delay which is interesting.

Oh thank goodness for that, I’ve been thinking about it all night 🤣

How did you find out?

Seren! Brilliant 😂 so glad you have worked it out. I go through this with DS too, it's so frustrating for them.

How did you find out?

Didn't you already rule Seren out? How did you get to the bottom of it?

I think I wasn’t saying it properly lol

I asked on the school Facebook page 😂🙈 bless her she was so happy when I said it this morning! She told her daddy that I hadn’t got my listening ears on and my phone wasn’t working to Google it 😂🙈

@Notmoresugar

In the kindest way how can you possibly call a 4 year old speech delayed!!??

Huh? I don't get your point.

My daughters speech at 4 was delayed, she made odd sound substitutions that meant she couldn't say her own name correctly.

Seren was my first thought! That’s exactly how most nursery and reception kids would say it. Glad you have figured it out.

She sounds utterly adorable OP and my heart went out to her poor little heart trying to be understood - it's a long time since I've had a little one, but you can see them trying so hard to get you to understand! You may just have a future Tiktok star on your hands if she's not camera shy as she sounds so cute!
When is the party? I hope that Seren can make it!

My dd also pronounced an R like a W so she's doing really well and isn't unusual in that respect. I struggle to be understood now with my accent sometimes, so the struggle is real lol

Absolutely nothing wrong with her confidence either!

How adorable! It is very clear !
I'd ask the teacher for a class list !

Oh bless her she sounds like a gem! My DS used to find it so frustrating to try to make himself heard, my heart used to bleed for him. Now at 14 you would never know, and her recently picked up an award for linguist of the year at school (for last year). When I think back to that little tot with his tongue in knots, and his little fists clenched in frustration, it brings a tear to my eye. She will get there op, and she’ll learn a whole lot of resilience too. Bear for your DD and Bear one for Seren too.

Lovely.

I didn't think that she was saying a "Sh" sound.

Ahh thank you! It’s not until July but she’s never had a birthday party before so she’s very excited! X

Lovely update. One of my DDs had extremely congested ears at that age which we didn’t pick up on at first. May be worth, if you haven't already, getting her ears looked at. Dd could hear certain sounds and not others.

She sounds amazing and good on her for taking this in her stride.

It sounds like she could be saying "sehran" which I know to be a boys name used by African or Muslim people.
