Worst human ever (probably dramatic)

I feel terrible! A year or so ago I saw a black dot in my sink and went to wash it away when I realised it was the teeniest baby snail.
I rescued it and I've taken care of it until the weather gets a little bit warmer and he/ she gets bigger.
I was thinking of releasing it and I've just cleaned out it's little home. I noticed it wasn't in there so had a look around and spotted it in the kitchen wall. I've just tried to move it and heard a little crack noise SadSadnow I've cracked the shell slightly after all this time. I feel awful!! It's still on the wall, I'm hoping to somehow get it back into its home and really really hoping it heals.
Not much point to this post except to share my extreme guilt

Flowers - can you allow it to crawl on a bit of cardboard or a cabbage leaf?

Kanaloa · 13/04/2021 18:58

I think crushed up egg shell is supposed to be good for their shells. Can they live if it’s visibly cracked though? I’m not sure if they heal.

WeatherwaxLives · 13/04/2021 19:07

Was it firmly stuck to the wall? Like sealed on? If so it is probably hibernating, so don't try and move it again, it's not good for it for the seal to be broken while it's hibernating.

It can repair its shell, snaily godmother. Rescue it and make sure it has a nice humid environment.

iamtheoneandonlyyy · 13/04/2021 19:31

I put a leaf under it and it's made it's way onto it. I've had a good look and there's no visible damage. So far back in the little snail house and eating, slithering around.
Now just hoping he or she is going to make it, I still feel evil.

You are awesome.

iamtheoneandonlyyy · 13/04/2021 19:36

@IndecentCakes snaily is the name, my children came up with it. It's not the most creative Grinbut I found him/ her at a very bad point last year and now it's survival has become very important, I realise I sound a little mad lol.

I once discovered a teeny tiny snail whilst stroking my cat. Apparently he'd hitched a ride inside.

SeriouslyAreYouSerious · 13/04/2021 19:53

I think you definitely do need to make sure it has access to calcium in order for it to make a nice strong shell. Dd has a snail tank and the instructions mentioned the need to provide crushed eggshells if snails were to be kept for longer than a week.

ILoveToads · 13/04/2021 19:55

After a shitty day dealing with shitty people, you have restored my faith that there are some good people in the world OP 😀

iamtheoneandonlyyy · 13/04/2021 19:57

@ILoveToads well then I'm glad I posted Thanks

I accidentally cracked a teeny baby snail with my nail the other day, thought it was a wee stone stuck to my can of Diet Coke!

I felt awful Sad I love those wee snails.

VladmirsPoutine · 13/04/2021 20:17

ooooHHH you're better than me!! I would as the famed MN expression goes taken a flamethrower to my house. Well done!

Longingforatikihut · 13/04/2021 20:25

Get some cuttlefish bone. They need the calcium for their shells. You could also try calcium carbonate powder which can either be sprinkled on foot or made into cakes using an ice cube tray.

Food wise, they need more than leaves. Try tomatoes. And some dampened fish food flakes for protein.

They also need a very humid environment.

I keep pet snails. If you need any help just message.

iamtheoneandonlyyy · 13/04/2021 20:29

Ooh Thankyou, I will do. I don't dare realise until I'm sure the shell is secure now

OP this reminds me of the film Penguin Bloom which I watched on Netflix a few days ago - a woman who was having a really hard time got involved in looking after a baby bird her DC had brought home. Hope Snaily does well!
