A friend told me today that they've finally named their new Shih tzu puppy who they got a week ago. He's gorgeous and fluffy and they've chosen the name Monkey! I know it's none of my business but I really don't think that name suits him and it sounds a little bit silly... but it's kinda cute at the sane time I guess!

My brother had two cats called Mingy and Mongy after Emperor Ming of Mongo from Flash Gordon (I guess!)

I put out food and water for the hedgehogs. The first one I saw I called Drucilla because, acrding to my carer, Spike is too obvious.

When we had the few weeks of really hot weather a couple of years ago the hedgehogs were desperate for water so I had a number visiting. I wasn't going to check for sex so called them alternate male and female names.

Drucilla
Brian Bolt - he started off as Brian because he looked like that but I added Bolt because he would run away very fast
Princess Twilight Sparkles
Speckled Jim
Meriel

My goldfish were Sid Vicious (because he had a black fin like a punk hairdo) and Nancy. They were won at a fair and Sid lived many years, grew too big for a tank and went on a train journey in a large tub to live out his days in my Gran's huge pond!!!

Current cats are Oberon, Ophelia, and Sebastian (stray who moved in!) and the dog is Orla Satu!

PrematureConker · 13/04/2021 00:26

DD1 (15) laughed at a dog being called Ben, yesterday. But I said it's quite common for farm dogs to have short names like Ben, Pen, Mac (thinking of One Man and his Dog years ago), then I was trying to come up with other three letter names and said "Lee". We fell about 🤣🤣

SilverOtter · 13/04/2021 09:06

CovoidOfAllHumanity · 13/04/2021 09:33

I once took an Irish trainee Dr to see an elderly man on a home visit (in England BTW) and you could have cut the atmosphere with a knife when he explained his dog was called Carson because it's Black and Tan.

I did not have the knowledge of Irish history to get why that was offensive but when it was explained I realised it was basically the equivalent of calling your black and white cat minstrel.

CovoidOfAllHumanity · 13/04/2021 09:35

Not exactly funny but it was certainly awkward and we did laugh about it later mainly my blissful ignorance of the reason for the strained atmosphere (the dog owner was also very aware it was offensive)

VexedofVirginiaWater · 13/04/2021 10:27

Chicken called Paxo.

Someone at school had a cat called Oi, so he could stand in the garden and call Oi! to try and get it to come back at night.
