@Seriouslymole

Why would you not prioritise your own health over others?

I really dislike the narrative that anyone questioning and wanting to do what is personally est, is somehow being ‘selfish’.

Taswama · 14/04/2021 15:55

Went out for a pub lunch with kids as a motivation for a bike ride. Same pub that we went to back in August that prompted me to join this thread as they had taken side salads off the menu because of covid. Still no side salads on the menu but we ordered them anyway and it was no problem. About four or five outdoor tables were occupied, maybe 20 people in total.

I think if you were preventing people from getting the vaccine because you were afraid to have it, that might be selfish. But thinking of what is best for you and, I bet you thought of this, your family is not selfish. It's sensible.

But I think this is the narrative across the board at the moment. I feel very disinclined to talk about the vaccine - people keep asking me if I've had it yet and I just keep saying "not yet" because I know that if I say I'm not convinced I'm having it just yet I will get the sideways look and the "selfish" vibe.

Lostinacloud · 14/04/2021 17:23

I know what you mean @Seriouslymole but I just can’t get my head around it. The vaccine is for your own protection against any possible risk of severe illness or death as I see it. They are still constantly reminding us that it does not/may not stop transmission so why is it selfish to choose not to get it yourself? If people that are worried for their own health are vaccinated then surely even if my unvaccinated self manages to infect a whole crowd of grannies, they should all be protected?

ISaySteadyOn · 14/04/2021 17:41

Exactly

AcornAutumn · 14/04/2021 18:32

Am I right in thinking the Evening standard website shows the same home page to everyone?

My first thought on looking at this, I see what's coming and it might be worse than my prediction that 17th May changes won't happen.

My second thought is STOP LINING UP FOR MORE LOCKDOWN. Jeez, if these people want to stay at home forever that's fine. Are they all hoping for a self isolation payment or what?

AcornAutumn · 14/04/2021 18:32

Sorry, forgot link in my irritation

Sometimes getting nissed and putting the world to rights is exactly what you need Grin

One of my best moments of 2020 involved 2/3s of a large bottle of gin and illegal occupation of a sofa. It was a bit of a mercy mission; the week it became clear that the DCs weren't going back to school for another 3m and none of the little relaxations had really improved life for us. I'd hit random sobbing mode.

Unusually astute for the Guardian!

Yep Thats what i thought.

MrsDeaconClaybourne · 15/04/2021 07:34

That's a great article. Also surprised to see it in the guardian (which is a good thing I think!)

BogRollBOGOF · 15/04/2021 10:16

Being cynical, and having watched similar patterns repeating over the past year, are MSM being "allowed" to do more critical/ wider consequence pieces as we're opening up again. They were certainly thin on the ground over the winter.

My sense of winter depression is easing (thank goodness it's warming up, I was so fed-up of being cold) but it's quite a head fuck between seeing the positive data, general optomism in the real world and the doomy propaganda from the government and some of the reaction to that. (At least I know certain names to prepare my inner eyeroll for Wink )

My sense of time is buggered. I have a race on Sunday. I need to get my head around logistics. School is back on Monday. Plus most of our extra-curriculars/ sports are back.
Last year I'd have been excited, but the uncertainty of the autumn and on/ off/ changing formats mean that at the moment, I can't anticipate it. Next week's routines will be the most normal they've been in a year and it's not registering emotionally.

I feel the same Bog . DC's activities all starting back which is great but have a underlying nagging feeling of not being able to trust that they won't stop again. We've been flocking all over the place this week and had a lovely time but again that background worry of for how long.

On a positive note, I'm currently waiting for the DC somewhere with BBC news on a loop and none of the stories are CV related. So far we've had Cameron, hospital waits, USA police shootings and DoE funeral. None of it cheery but does make a nice change and feels a bit more normal! Who'd have thought id be pleased to see goverment/mp corruption headlining!

BIoodyStupidJohnson · 15/04/2021 11:00

MrsDC I'm the same re the news, I have been in the highly unusual position the last couple of days of actually being pleased to see Cameron's 'with My reputation?' face.

Because if he's on I don't have to look at sepulchral professors in bad suits intoning the last rites for personal freedom and responsibility.

This London/surge testing stuff is bothering me though. I'm in one of the 'affected' boroughs and we're supposed to be moving house in May. We've had to start committing to things, and of course nothing is 'covered' for coronavirus restriction interruption any more. If we get locked down again at the last minute we stand to lose thousands in removals fees and tenancy deposits. And potentially have nowhere to live. I'm chewing my nails a lot at the moment.

WouldBeGood · 15/04/2021 11:22

I’m worried about this too. I spent a fortune and a huge amount of effort getting fit after last time. So whilst I’m looking forward to getting back to it I’m a bit wary. It’s hard to get fit at my age and a bit of me is wondering if it’s worth trying again.

TrustTheGeneGenie · 15/04/2021 11:44

Was moving house stopped before? I didn't realise.

I don't really understand the surge testing thing, anyone with half a brain wouldn't do it surely? I know how selfish that it, but there isn't a cat in hells chance I'd test unless I was ill.

AcornAutumn · 15/04/2021 11:45

BloodyStupidJohnson most removal companies are operating in full lockdown though I thought?

WouldBeGood not sure of your age or fitness. But I'm a fan of Jessica Smith who says "every workout doesn't have to be balls to the wall".

TrustTheGeneGenie · 15/04/2021 11:46

Sorry if anyone has taken part, I obviously don't think anyone here has less than a full brain (except me maybe!)

You would think - they're bloody queuing, if they do it at the weekend I might go and talk to the people in the queue!
BIoodyStupidJohnson · 15/04/2021 12:02

Acorn yes, they do seem to be operating throughout. I am just getting myself worked up as per! Our appointed removals company seems to be very good actually, they told us that they were even moving people during lockdown 1 (fulfilling moves already booked and paid for I think).

Puppylucky · 15/04/2021 12:25

I moved twice during lockdown - into temporary accommodation and then into our final destination. The only possible issue we faced was with the temporary accommodation, as Airbnb stopped taking bookings for after the start of lockdown once it was announced. We basically moved out a bit earlier and stayed in the Airbnb a couple of days longer to make sure we were in before the shutters came down. The move into our permanent place went ahead with no hiccups at all.
