@AcornAutumn

Also they are preparing "evidence" for the hospitality court case next week, so they will certainly argue more for lockdowns. They won't lose the case anyway but this is how they will defend it.
That makes so much sense. I've been scratching my head about that soundbite all day and feeling rather depressed about it.

Also maybe a bit of reverse psychology for those of us that think vaccines are making a difference when carefully targeted at the vulnerable and are pleased that they're also available for those who want them, but don't ourselves feel comfortable having them just yet.

MrsEWeatherwax · 13/04/2021 20:33

Thanks for all theFlowers.
My DM is going to have are antidepressants upped because they are no longer working. I’m starting to get scared we are never losing masks etc.
Pleased to see all the people out enjoying themselves. My local wildlife area was empty tonight.Grin. People doing something more interesting than bloody walking. Shop and more shops.

amicissimma · 13/04/2021 20:40

Why are we blaming anybody? It's a virus. It will spread because that's what they do.

We can reduce that spread somewhat by trying not to spend long periods in one position in a crowded, unventilated place, but viruses have cleverly evolved to spread when humans interact. And sooner or later most of us have to interact. That's why viruses like us.

BogRollBOGOF · 13/04/2021 21:31

They're still convinced that the virus has a strict code of conduct where it obligingly leaves the rule abiding alone... actually more than that as immoral but legal behaviour such as queuing outside certain bargainous clothing emporia, or consuming alcoholic beverages outside Weatherspoons will undoubtably see us in lockdown #4 to fend off the 64th wave before you can say "Mask-up" Wink

Last summer/ early autumn I was generally still minimising going to indoor spaces because they were higher risk. In some ways more cautious than the rules, but I've got no issue with people that took those opportunities. By the time that the rule lightens up in May between vaccinations and rates that are already rather low, I will be happier than last year about that. I've been into two houses in over a year... ok 3 if you count illegally using a toilet by a front door for 2 mins Grin

I do wonder how many of the worried well are actually aware of how many cases there are in the areas that they're exposed to and what the actual risk is.

Patience with the BDs and their moralising and roolz is running much lower though Grin

I sometimes wonder if it would be more effective to get rid of all the bitty rules and replace them with the instruction to just OPEN THE WINDOW.

I should perhaps confess that I'm no fan of air con and have always preferred open windows, with a fan if it's hot.

BogRollBOGOF · 13/04/2021 23:12

I always ventilated my classrooms anyway, I hate Eew de Teenager! It's part of that sensitive to humidity thing that's been a tad awkward since last July. I'd often get a cold if starting in a new area like a local variations immune upgrade, but other than 2-3 colds a year, I'm rarely ill.
One school I worked had an old-school headmaster and reminded staff to open windows for good health... there was a lot of grumbling about it!

One legacy that would be worth having is better regulations of ventilation and windows on public use buildings.

It does remind me a bit of the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy where Ford Prefect finds himself on the outside of the 13th floor and the retrofitted missile-proof windows following the climate control riots. Grin

I really don't like overcooked or air-conned air. I miss sun roofs on cars. They were great Grin

A lot of the public are realizing that whatever they do and whatever they sacrifice it will never be enough to please some others. If Christmas was "cancelled" people would not accept a January lockdown and you would get very low compliance if they did both.
And NHS CEO Chris Hopson has got a fucking cheek with his tweets. Many NHS workers have been bullied and emotionally blackmailed into coming into work when ill pre Covid. So the NHS management etc should get their own fucking house in order rather than using the same emotional blackmail tactics on the public that they use on their front line staff. I suppose the higher ups are frightened they will actually have to do some work for their bloated pay.

MercyBooth Fri 08-Jan-21 22:35:08

The public arent allowed to criticise the NHS but there has been plenty of it vice versa. So it doesnt seem to work both ways. The guilt tripping and emotional blackmail of ppl in the run up to Christmas should they have wanted to see their families was bloody appalling. From ppl like Chris Hopson. It was also coming from the Government too. Asking ppl not to see their families for all this time is a big ask. But now im seeing tweets from NHS workers citing what the public did at Christmas as the fault of this surge. Over 85% stayed at home. Yet it still isnt enough. It will never be enough no matter what we do. Yet we have come in for loads of criticism guilt tripping, emotional blackmail, bullying etc. NHS workers on the frontline are great. But please realise guilt tripping and emotional blackmail affects peoples mental health.

MercyBooth · 14/04/2021 00:54

I was wrong about them not getting compliance for a winter lockdown if they cancelled Christmas.
But i was right about it not being enough whatever we do and whatever we sacrifice. Hopson and his ilk want even more.

MercyBooth · 14/04/2021 00:58

SirSamuelVimes · 14/04/2021 08:23

I don't know what Boris's plan was for those comments about lockdown Vs vaccines (boldly assuming he had a plan, that is) but it's making me seriously consider not having mine. I'm way down the list anyway, 30s and no conditions, but the only reason I was accepting having it was to contribute to the herd immunity via vaccine idea, and therefore get us out of future restrictions. If it's not going to make a difference and they are going to stick us back in lockdown whenever they feel like it, I don't think I'll have it. It's already a dodgy level of risk Vs benefit I think - my risk from Covid is miniscule, all vaccines carry an element of risk so I'm just replacing one small risk with another. Add to that the fact I'm breastfeeding and it stacks the scales against it. The chance of avoiding future lockdown and distancing restrictions was tipping the scales back to the "I'll just have it" side buy after those comments I'm doubting that it will have any effect.

Not sure if I'll tell people I'm not having it though. Will just lie by omission. Can't afford holidays or anything else fun at the moment anyway.

DrRamsesEmerson · 14/04/2021 08:54

I don’t suppose he had a plan. It seems unlikely that he actually wanted to put people off having the vaccine, but my first thought yesterday was that it would. (Well, my first thought after I’d stopped swearing at him.)

I think I’ll probably still have it, because I do think there’s a public health benefit in more of us being immunised (not that it matters a damn if we’re going to spend our lives in lockdown, but I have to keep acting as though we won’t because otherwise there’s no point in going on). But I’m 47, I don’t think I’m inclined to criticise people younger than me who look at the risk/benefit to them and decide not to bother as it’s going to make no difference.

BogRollBOGOF · 14/04/2021 08:55

The evidence (data) that vaccines are working looks pretty clear. The changes in who caught the virus was quite clear as even by Feb the vaccinated 80+ group began deviating away from the patterns of the previous lockdowns and the hospital/ admissions data matches as the most vulnerable are receiving that initial protection.

It's just frustrating that the goverment seem determined to undermine the effects of the vaccine, and more so as younger groups face a different risk/ benefit factor and managing a common liklihood of feeling fairly crap for day afterwards.

Death rates currently 19% below 5 year average!

BogRollBOGOF · 14/04/2021 08:56

I'm glad I had mine a couple of weeks ago before half of this crap came out!

WouldBeGood · 14/04/2021 09:12

Risk of death in over 60s now from catching Covid reported as 0.9 in 100,000 in paper last night.

I have no idea why they’re now saying it’s not vaccines that are cutting rates and risk.

Telegraph also reporting a quarter of reported Covid deaths are not from Covid.

Recycledblonde · 14/04/2021 09:58

Anyone else noticed that each time restrictions have been lifted a bit, someone comes out with some negativity. Call me cynical but it does seem deliberately timed to make sure the fear stays high. In a couple of weeks I would expect to see negative news stories less prominent and then ramped up again as the next reduction gets close.

ISaySteadyOn · 14/04/2021 10:06

I'm late thirties and I was considering getting jabbed and had almost made up my mind to do so, but I now feel like SirSamuelVimes about it. I guess one could argue that Johnson did put me off having it. If it is going to make zero difference to restrictions, why bother? Why not just accept that as far as this government and SAGE are concerned, I am not a human being but a diseased organism who should be shut away forever?

And DD2 is having a rubbish Easter holiday because she says that it feels too much like the school closures. How sad is that.

SirSamuelVimes · 14/04/2021 10:18

Telegraph also reporting a quarter of reported Covid deaths are not from Covid.

Fucking hell.

Lostinacloud · 14/04/2021 10:46

I feel the same as you too @SirSamuelVimes. I’m early 40’s and I’ve also had covid and my body dealt with it just fine. I’m not convinced that you only have immune protection against it for 6 months because why would that be the case? Why would it be different to any other immune response to a cold virus?
They say immunity to swine flu is at least 17 years (so far) because that’s all they can count due to it only existing for 17 years so far. I think covid will be the same and I don’t want to take on the small risk of taking the vaccine when I feel confident that I don’t really carry a risk for covid. I understand if you haven’t had covid already that you still have that tiny risk of becoming unwell and so can balance that against the tiny risk of a vaccine side effect and I’m not anti-vaccine, but it’s not for me and I hope I don’t get forced to have it just so I can do normal things in the future.

Meanwhile I want to scream at the news about the South African variant today! Reports say that the vaccine looks less effective against spread but still appears to offer good protection against serious illness or death, so why do we need to care about cases? I appreciate there are people dotted around who can’t have the vaccine and so may be at risk but equally the nhs shouldn’t be overwhelmed and so there is plenty of space to treat them. Fgs, we can’t be a virus free planet! And I’ve just read that at least 23 of the 40 ish case cluster is at 1 care home!

TrustTheGeneGenie · 14/04/2021 11:30

Checking in. Well I don't think the job I want next year is going to be mine. Urgh. Someone else is going for it and she already works in that dept so she'll probably get it.

I'm fed up.

House I wanted is back on the market but now I'm really unsure whether I'm even interested. It's beautiful but I don't want to make my life hard.

Just feeling so deflated.

justasking111 · 14/04/2021 11:56

Go and look at the house again. Boris should not have knocked the vaccine they're scared we will venture out I suspect, they're just winding up mental health issues with this.

Yesterday I went to Debenhams bought ten lovely bits of clothing for five grandchildren. Big queue at Primark otherwise a normal shopping day.

justasking111 · 14/04/2021 11:58

This morning went to Conwy new battery for favourite watch and a lovely bangle for DIL birthday. It's lovely to have my usual shops open again

SirSamuelVimes · 14/04/2021 12:08

Same here @Lostinacloud, I'm pretty certain I had Covid this time last year, it wasn't fun but it was no where close to the most ill I've ever been, so I don't really care if I get it again, from the pov of how sick it might make me, and I'm reasonably confident in my body having some level of immunity. My parents and ILs are vaccinated, no-one else I mix closely with is vulnerable. So if I don't have it I don't really see how that would be a terrible thing.

BogRollBOGOF · 14/04/2021 12:08

Our original thread's been linked on the coffee and cheese thread. I think it's aged better than most started in late April last year Grin
Some things have changed too little though.

Still not at all sure what to do about the vaccine. I'm 47, average weight, average fitness (better than some, worse than others) and up to now have been of the opinion that I would want to wait until there was further data on the long-term impacts on people. But I feel like that is me saying that my health is worth more than others and they can trial it for me, which is not nice.

Tricky.

So frustrated with the way this has been handled, and the fact that children are STILL having to wear face masks in school, which I'm sure is neither efficacious or healthy.
