I've noticed what seems to be every other car I've seen has either been a Tesla, a 20/70/21 reg car or both. Seems to be since covid more People have had new cars! Anybody else noticed this? I don't live in an affluent area

I noticed a lot last year 20/70 plate and was surprised as thought people would have less money to spend on cars. But a friends DH had a new Tesla in September and he had to order it in February
I've noticed far fewer 21 plate cars, but most do seem to be Teslas
(I do live in a fairly affluent area - we let the side down though, both our cars are over 12 years old!)

Redlocks28 · 03/04/2021 14:04

No, I can’t say I’ve noticed that around here!

Vickles20 · 03/04/2021 14:04

Yes. Bloody ridiculous. Pisses me off in fact. Complete stealth boast in my opinion.

TakeYourFinalPosition · 03/04/2021 14:06

Yep, but it’s quite well off round here... and most people have been furloughed on 80%. Houses around £400k and up are flying off Rightmove, taking two days max to sell at asking. I suspect new furniture and new cars are things people think they can benefit from even in lockdown, so sales have boomed.

ImaHogg · 03/04/2021 14:08

The amount of Tesla’s in our (average income) area is amazing, personally I think they are one of the most ugliest cars I’ve ever seen.
Brand new Range Rovers are also a thing around here too. I honestly don’t know how people are affording it!?

ImaHogg · 03/04/2021 14:11

And we have new builds in every village in area area with starting prices of £400k, many 800k. It’s an average area with average pay on most jobs advertised in my area.

Quit4me · 03/04/2021 14:13

How on earth are people affording 800k houses and new Tesla’s?

Nightbear · 03/04/2021 14:14

There are tax breaks on them as company cars aren’t there? And they’re exempt from the London congestion charge.

HercwasanEnemyofEducation · 03/04/2021 14:14

Credit.

Larryslockdownlunch · 03/04/2021 14:14

They're not buying them outright though are they? They'll be leased or on finance won't they. I get a brand new car every 2 years. Leased for £200 a month. Going for a 7 seat Mercedes in September (will be more than £200 this time though 🤣)

DoubleTweenQueen · 03/04/2021 14:14

Do some get them as company cars?

UntamedWisteria · 03/04/2021 14:15

How is a car a stealth boast?

I mean, you can't hide what car you drive - and if you can afford to buy a new expensive car, what are you supposed to do?

Fathernetter · 03/04/2021 14:17

Yes company cars, i know people got them like that.

Megan2018 · 03/04/2021 14:19

Leasing is cheap

Steptoeshorse1965 · 03/04/2021 14:19

Surprising what Car hire firms have in stock now, and the ongoing power of consumer credit. So many Range Rovers on the road now too one sees, how many outright owners I wonder, and how many can actually afford to to repair such electronically based behemoths when anything goes wrong? Dig a little deeper for there lies the true answer.

Oblomov21 · 03/04/2021 14:21

I've been seeing lots too. Dead Jealous. I've worked throughout. Wish I'd been furloughed, and could afford a Tesla.

TheOneWithTheBigNose · 03/04/2021 14:22

I’m not sure you know what a ‘stealth boast’ is... cars are one of the least stealthy ways to boast Grin. Anyway it’s not something I’ve noticed, but I don’t take much interest in what others are driving. I’m not sure I’ve ever noticed a Tesla on the road. Our car is a 20 plate just because we happened to get a new car last year.

How do you know the people driving them have been furloughed??
Etulosba · 03/04/2021 14:26

I've not noticed that around here. I can't remember when I last saw a Tesla. Plenty of Land/Range Rovers but none new

UntamedWisteria · 03/04/2021 14:26

I'd say the people who've ben furloughed are less likely to be Abel to afford a Tesla.

justanotherneighinparadise · 03/04/2021 14:28

Most of these cars are lease hold or similar. I wouldn’t get too excited about it. We enjoy owning our cars. They are ours to do as we please.

What?!

IHaveBrilloHair · 03/04/2021 14:29

My cars are motability so brand new, that's the only reason.

DemobHappy · 03/04/2021 14:29

I’ve not noticed any Teslas round here (London suburb), but over the past 5-10 years I’ve noticed most cars are new-ish. It’s leasing. Not many of my friends buy outright, new or secondhand, any more. I’d never buy a car again, personally.

TreesAndStuff · 03/04/2021 14:30

I have a brand new one, it's leased. We alway lease and it was much cheaper to lease than our previous car (even though the last car was 15k cheaper on the road!) - also very little electric to charge, no petrol, road tax, congestion charger etc.

I don't LOVE it but its benefits outway the all the other stuff.

I think they're a bit like marmite. But I have noticed so many more on the road in the last few weeks.
