I've noticed what seems to be every other car I've seen has either been a Tesla, a 20/70/21 reg car or both. Seems to be since covid more People have had new cars! Anybody else noticed this? I don't live in an affluent area

@Vickles20

Yes. Bloody ridiculous. Pisses me off in fact. Complete stealth boast in my opinion.
Because no one is allowed to buy something nice for themselves 🤨
Ikeameatballs · 03/04/2021 14:33

I could have got one very cheaply as a lease through my work scheme. It’s because they are electric so there is no Benefit in Kind tax on them as company cars.

Sadly I’d just signed up for my Toyota RAV 4 hybrid and couldn’t wait for the Tesla to become available.

Etulosba · 03/04/2021 14:33

They are ours to do as we please.

I am looking at buying a new 4x4. On the face of it, it would be cheaper on a lease deal and that is what the garages are pushing. The problem is that we work our cars hard so they probably wouldn't want it back at the end of the lease period.

WeekendCEO · 03/04/2021 14:35

Well they’re better for the environment so it’s a good thing. 🤷🏻‍♀️ I’m thinking of getting one soon but not using any car much at the moment so not much point until life gets a bit more ‘normal’. Our son is learning to drive at the moment so definitely considering one for him.

How on earth is it a stealth boast?? That doesn't even make sense.
Etulosba · 03/04/2021 14:37

Our son is learning to drive at the moment so definitely considering one for him.

It will mean he will get an auto only licence.

SandysMam · 03/04/2021 14:38

I agree OP, I honestly feel like more people have made/saved money out this pandemic. I don’t know anyone who used to drive a Tesla who has had to downgrade to an Astra! I hope this is true, be better for the economy if that is the case.

OneRingToRuleThemAll · 03/04/2021 14:38

I wouldn't even recognise a Tesla. Although others are right. When you rent a car it gives you the ability to drive newer models. I think those who drive older cars are better off though as they tend to own their car.

WeekendCEO · 03/04/2021 14:39

What? He’s leaning in a manual Ford. He’ll be able to drive whatever car he likes.

WeekendCEO · 03/04/2021 14:40

*learning

TolkiensFallow · 03/04/2021 14:41

I think it’s all lease or company cars. It’s getting to expensive to even buy a cheap car so more people are leasing.

Sorry. I miss-read your post as saying you were going to get one for him to learn to drive in... or even lean in.

Not everyone has suffered financially during covid. Lke all extreme situations there will be extremes of experience. I work for a company that makes something that demand tripled for if not more during Covid - similar to for example working for Zoom. Because I am commission-based I have therefore earnt 3x more this financial year than normal. DH similarly is self-employed from home and as there was eff all else to do than work he has also had an unusually good year. I haven't spent it on a Tesla though as I don't like them, I live near an airport and all the taxis round here are Teslas, cos of the low tax etc I guess, so I've been I. The passenger seat on several airport runs and find them really claustrophobic (I am like that generally though)

I also know 2 people who have just come off furlough but we're also still working and they have both just leased new cars (Audis) and apprently leases deals were good in the throes of lockdown - presumably because the car industry was suffering.

Eyevorbig0ne · 03/04/2021 14:45

Not round here.
Some have saved a fortune wfh. No train fares, parking, costalots or megabucks coffees or lunches. Some have saved on wraparound childcare costs too. Plus savings due to no holidays.
I'm not one of these lucky folk, by the way.
Not furloughed either.

BusySittingDown · 03/04/2021 14:45

Most of the Teslas I've seen are Model 3s (more "affordable" version) and they haven't been out long. Probably why you're seeing a lot of them now. They've been bought by people that couldn't afford a Model S or Model X.

goldenzog · 03/04/2021 14:56

A lot of them will be company cars because of a change in government tax rules making them much cheaper for businesses. Not sure why anyone would be annoyed to see them on the road?! Surely it's one less car filling the air with poisonous fumes!?

BJHair · 03/04/2021 15:01

My husband leased a new 20 plate Mercedes CLA AMG line in June last year. He collected the day the dealers opened. 😂
He ordered it a few months before and it wouldn’t have been ready till June anyway
We have also been one of the lucky ones who haven’t been affected by Covid or the lockdown in terms of money .
We have also saved a fair amount of money as no holidays which would have cost a min of 8-10k over a year
No going out for meals once or twice a month or weekends away has probably saved at least 1k -1500 over a year
I haven’t bought much in the way of clothes either as nowhere to go - not saying how much that’s saved me .😂

BarbaraofSeville · 03/04/2021 15:15

@Larryslockdownlunch

They're not buying them outright though are they? They'll be leased or on finance won't they. I get a brand new car every 2 years. Leased for £200 a month. Going for a 7 seat Mercedes in September (will be more than £200 this time though 🤣)
But you don't get much of a car for £200 a month on a lease unless you do very very low mileage.

Certainly not Teslas, Mercedes, Range Rovers etc, unless you pay a massive deposit.

fizbosshoes · 03/04/2021 15:18

Theres nothing stealth about a car, and not really a boast as a)everyone has different budgets but b) a lot of other people have them as well?

StartingGrid · 03/04/2021 15:26

Teslas are fairly common where I live, and have seen quite a few 70/21 plate cars about too. I have a 69 plate car I paid nearly 30k for when it was 6 months old, however I didn't lease it but did pay for it with a loan, as I figured if anything goes wrong in life I can easily sell it that way! It would have been 41k brand new so saved 11k for the 4,000 miles it had done, and by the time I've paid the loan off I expect it to still be worth at least 22k. I wasn't ever furloughed btw!

dividedwefall · 03/04/2021 15:30

I live in a middle management area so everyone has new executive cars every couple of years on lease. I have seen a couple more Tesla model 3 in the past couple of weeks though. All of them white. Perhaps there has been a special lease deal on HUKD.

H1978 · 03/04/2021 15:32

It’s annoying to see. We got our Tesla model s on finance 3 years ago which we’ve just paid off a few months ago. Our business has been all but dead since covid (travel and tourism) so it was touch and go for a while if we could have afforded to pay the rest of the finance.

BarbaraofSeville · 03/04/2021 15:34

Why is other people having a new car 'annoying to see'?

People have different budgets and different priorities. What they do is up to them.

In fact, lots of other people having lease deals as that increases the supply of well looked after 3 YO cars to choose from, at the same time as reducing demand, because other people are shelling out for brand new cars.

fiorentina · 03/04/2021 15:36

Some great lease deals around due to lack of demand for new cars so probably a lot aren’t owned.
