Why do eggs not have treats inside them anymore?

Soubriquet · 02/04/2021 15:10

Growing up . I always remember cracking open my egg to get things like smarties or what not inside

Now they are always separate.

Why? What happened to treats inside the egg?

I had a smarties egg yesterday with smarties inside...

YoComoManzanas · 02/04/2021 15:13

I was looking for one of these for my kids in the supermarkets. They would love it. Even thought about making one myself but dismissed that as too ambitious. Maybe next year. Grin

LadyPoison · 02/04/2021 15:13

Cheaper to make I expect. That's what it boils down to in the end.

Probably costs more to produce 🙄.

mynameiscalypso · 02/04/2021 15:17

I think I saw one in Waitrose this morning which had the chocolates 'secretly hidden' inside like it was a totally new thing.

VenusClapTrap · 02/04/2021 15:19

Yes! I spent weeks last year trying to find eggs with chocolates inside and got quite grumpy about it.

I didn’t even bother trying this year.

It’s just not the same when they are separate.

Soubriquet · 02/04/2021 15:21

Cheaper is probably a good suggestion

Shame really as I remember smashing them just to get to the goodies inside Grin

I found one today in a fancy chocolate shop as the supermarket was sold out. Ooh truffles inside - lovely i thought.

£65!!!!!!!

I put it down 😬

N51BU · 02/04/2021 15:44

Is the egg itself not a treat?

CuriousaboutSamphire · 02/04/2021 15:48

Oh you grump!

The teeny tiny package of sweets inside some eggs were always a great excitement. So much so my mother once made us eggs and hid proper presents inside, jewellery. I was in my 30s and it was as exciting as the eggs we had as kids 😊

GooodMythicalMorning · 02/04/2021 15:50

I was taking about this with my sisters today. we miss eggs- especially smarties with the treats inside. It isn't the same!

Redtartanshoes · 02/04/2021 15:50

Cost
Or
Choking hazard. Same as cereal toys that disappeared years ago

MrTumbleTumble · 02/04/2021 15:52

I had a Rolo one yesterday with rolos inside the egg. I was thrilled!

Crepescular · 02/04/2021 15:58

How to spectacularly miss the point...
StealthPolarBear · 02/04/2021 15:59

I had a rolo egg with the rolos inside. No plastic bag so when I smashed the egg it was just broken chocolate and rolos in the 'rubble'. How it should be.

Apologies didn't see this. It was like the good old days, wasn't it? :o
IntermittentParps · 02/04/2021 16:00

I really miss them too!

I don't mind that if it means they're making a comeback.

VienneseWhirligig · 02/04/2021 16:01

I'm sure I remember eggs with Dolly mixtures inside, but I've never seen eggs with them outside (like smarties eggs where they used to be inside but are now outside) if that makes sense. So maybe I imagined it? I don't like the tears being outside, you eat them first and then forget about the egg, whereas if they were inside you had to eat the egg first.

HermioneWeasley · 02/04/2021 16:02

It simplifies production and therefore speeds it up and reduces cost. Having to change the line every time you need to put creme eggs in vs crunchies is expensive

Strangekindofwoman · 02/04/2021 16:04

I used to feel very grown up if I got a milk tray easter egg with the little tray of chocolates inside the egg.

expectopelargonium · 02/04/2021 16:05

I used to love the Black Magic eggs with chocolates inside. One of the best parts of the eggs that came in two halves was the chunky rim. Best tasting chocolate ever.

Easter eggs ain't what they used to be.

MrTumbleTumble · 02/04/2021 16:06

It was! And you're totally right about the lack of plastic bag making it feel "proper" Grin

Hoppythehippo · 02/04/2021 16:08

It means that eg Cadbury can make exactly the same big hollow egg for all its products - so a “creme egg” egg, a “mini eggs” egg, a “dairy milk” egg will all be identical eggs, just put in different branded boxes with a different packet of sweets/small egg next to it. Cheaper, simpler.

Arbadacarba · 02/04/2021 16:08

Because it's cheaper to do it that way.

(Note - almost any 'why' question relating to a decision made by a business can accurately be answered with that sentence).

Solasum · 02/04/2021 16:12

I looked in vain for eggs with egg cups. Still have all my childhood egg cups
