Why do eggs not have treats inside them anymore?

Soubriquet · 02/04/2021 15:10

Growing up . I always remember cracking open my egg to get things like smarties or what not inside

Now they are always separate.

Why? What happened to treats inside the egg?

OP posts:

Tesco do eggs in mugs. They had Cream Eggs and Mini Egg ones at my local Tesco petrol station.

BluntlySpoken · 02/04/2021 19:02

Nestle rolo smarties etc are inside.
I prefer it seperate lol

Brawsome · 02/04/2021 19:19

I think it’s because the box will look bigger if the treats are kept outside the egg. Will look like you are getting lots more for your money.

Sorry Staffy1 - that’s what you said already. Think you are right.

@picklemewalnuts

I'm happy happy, I bought the eggs this year, amd we have a Henrietta hen and her eggs, a Larry lamb, and a jellybean egg. No sweets inside, I don't think, but much more fun than DHs choices!
Wasn’t he in Eastenders?
Bargebill19 · 02/04/2021 19:23

Because when they are returned unsold, the bars can be processed back into stock at the warehouse. The eggs go straight to remelted into new chocolate. Saves having to sort and fish out the wrappers.

You still get them but you have to pay extra. I remember solid chocolate easter eggs that you had to melt slightly to eat - those are only available from speciality procedures and cost so much now

Notavegan · 02/04/2021 19:28

I used to spend a week carefully dismantling the packaging then step one, eat the treats inside. Wrap egg back up. Step 2, eat back of egg. Wrap back up very carefully. By Easter Sunday there was little left, a tiny bit of the front shell. I'm not sure my mum even noticed. I was deprived of chocolate in my life generally

TooStressyTooMessy · 02/04/2021 19:33

I have been unreasonably extremely annoyed about this for years OP Grin. I really miss the eggs with the treats inside. Luckily my DC don’t know what they are missing. I have mostly come to terms with it but still feel a little sadness about the whole thing every Easter. Reassuring to hear some still exist. Will have to look for them next Easter.

"My rolo one was fused but you're right, more recently they do just drop apart. Maybe that's cadbury"

I'm going back a few years-20+ to them being in two halves & each half wrapped in foil.

Moulded plastic holding the two halves together?

Maybe it's always been the "make"?

diddl · 02/04/2021 19:40

Also though, to reduce plastic they'd have to be fused wouldn't they?

HeronLanyon · 02/04/2021 19:41

Very vital issue. Seems this started around maybe 10 years ago ??
Now thinking about a hot sharp knife and opening some of mine to put things in. Trouble is I’ll end up eating or breaking hmmm

Camomila · 02/04/2021 19:46

The Italian eggs of my childhood had toys inside and lovely shiny foil paper around them. I was so happy I found one for DS1 from Amazon now I don't live near an Italian deli.

cptartapp · 02/04/2021 20:08

I used to love rolling my Quality Street egg and searching for the loose chocolates that came spilling out.

idontlikealdi · 02/04/2021 20:08

@N51BU

Is the egg itself not a treat?
Oh come on!!!
namechangeaga1n · 02/04/2021 21:19

@happytoday73

I had a smarties egg yesterday with smarties inside...
My DC had a smarties inside too
Toddlerteaplease · 02/04/2021 21:57

I miss the mugs!

100% never happens. For a start, manufacturers never take returns.
Bargebill19 · 02/04/2021 22:11

As someone who had to do the job - yes they do.

blackheartsgirl · 02/04/2021 22:32

The rolos one is amazing!

Proper treat to find them inside the egg

TooStressyTooMessy · 02/04/2021 22:41

So smarties and rolos are the way to go next year then. Thanks for the info!

WeatherwaxLives · 02/04/2021 22:42

Because the eggs are all the same. So they can make a gazillion eggs, and then they just wrap them in different foil and stick whichever sweets in the box, and hey presto, celebrations egg vs malteaser egg.

Economy of scale, innit.

LunaNorth · 02/04/2021 22:44

We used to line up and roll our eggs against the gas cupboard door to break them.

Happy days.

Really? You took surplus stocks from major retailers (not DC's) and reworked them?

What retailers?
