Why do eggs not have treats inside them anymore?

Growing up . I always remember cracking open my egg to get things like smarties or what not inside

Now they are always separate.

Why? What happened to treats inside the egg?

The only things I remember getting inside easter eggs was jelly tots or chocolate buttons (in the 1980s/90s) but agree much more fun for them to be inside it.
On a similar theme has anyone else been disappointed with the surprise inside kinder eggs? When I was a kid you got a little kit with instructions, that you could make some tiny toy. The last time the DC had one it was just a ready made character, which I think is not half as interesting. (I admit, as a woman in my early 40s, I admit I'm probably not the audience they're trying to appeal to!😂)

@N51BU

Is the egg itself not a treat?
Nope

The shaking and the smarties inside are what make it special. I'd rather have a £2.99 egg with smarties inside than a £50 fancy, empty, egg.

@Soubriquet. The only one I found was certain sizes if the smarties egg. But when I was littke there were loads that had the treat inside not as an extra on the outside.

They still make me ridiculously happy 😀

It's also for food hygiene purposes. Any kind of plastic or packaging inside the egg becomes a food hygiene/foreign body risk nightmare.

That's why mostly the ones that contain sweets nowadays have unwrapped sweets.

@StealthPolarBear

I had a rolo egg with the rolos inside. No plastic bag so when I smashed the egg it was just broken chocolate and rolos in the 'rubble'. How it should be.
Oh wow. Must go hunting.....
luckylavender · 02/04/2021 16:26

And I miss mugs with eggs sitting in. Haven't seen one for ages.

Ds got one last year.
Staffy1 · 02/04/2021 16:39

When the treat is outside the egg it comes in a bigger box, so you think you're getting more until you open it and find half the box is used to store the extra treat.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 02/04/2021 16:40

DC have eggs with “bits inside” they do exist. But are cheapy Cadbury eggs. Small size ones I’d have thought are 99p ones.

Not the point Hmm
Fraggle40 · 02/04/2021 16:47

Yes i felt really sad when i noticed this in the supermarket.. its just rows of empty eggs and hardly any eggs have mugs now. They used to always have mugs and treats inside.. its just the same!

BertieBotts · 02/04/2021 16:50

It's something to do with the switch from hand-assembled eggs in a small factory to mass-produced machine assembled eggs in a big factory.

For a few years you got none inside at all. Then it switched to a few having some with sweets inside but the inside sweets were contained in little plastic bags.

picklemewalnuts · 02/04/2021 16:51

I'm happy happy, I bought the eggs this year, amd we have a Henrietta hen and her eggs, a Larry lamb, and a jellybean egg. No sweets inside, I don't think, but much more fun than DHs choices!

JoysexrenovationFingerFumble · 02/04/2021 16:54

@Redtartanshoes

Cost Or Choking hazard. Same as cereal toys that disappeared years ago
I was going to say choking hazard. I bet it's no longer considered safe to mix food and non-food. Or something.
Dasher789 · 02/04/2021 17:09

I didnt see any with mugs this year either. As a kid, I loved adding to my collection of Easter egg mugs every year

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 02/04/2021 17:10

Back in the day ( the 1970s) I had an egg with chocolate buttons (Cadbury) in a small clear brown plastic bag .

When my DC were little I used to take the sweets out to go in the sweet jar and keep the eggs for the Egg Hunt . Sweets being in the packaging seperate from the egg

Soubriquet · 02/04/2021 17:11

Oh god yes I remember the mugs!

You would get an egg sitting on top of a mug. Where have they all gone?

diddl · 02/04/2021 17:17

What is this smashing of the egg to which people refer?

Weren't the two halves always seperate?

Soubriquet · 02/04/2021 17:20

I think they were in some kinds whereas others the egg was fused together as a whole egg

OP posts:
NewYearNewTwatName · 02/04/2021 17:24

As pp said, they still fo them, they are the little cheaper eggs.

May17th · 02/04/2021 17:25

This is true. Me and my DB were always happy with the treats in the egg.

WaltzingToWalsingham · 02/04/2021 17:32

LuckyLavender I've been looking for an egg with a mug too. I haven't seen any recently. I loved my caramel mug, and now it's broken and I want to replace it!

GillBungalow · 02/04/2021 17:36

The mugs are also a pain in the arse Grin

Came on the boat from China, long lead times so the Easter Egg manufacturers had to order before they had their final sales volumes confirmed (so risking having too many/not enough), high waste because of breakages on the lines which also became foreign body risks.

GooodMythicalMorning · 02/04/2021 17:43

nestle ones were sealed but cadbury ones weren't if I'm remembering correctly.

StealthPolarBear · 02/04/2021 17:44

My rolo one was fused but you're right, more recently they do just drop apart. Maybe that's cadbury.
Oblomov21 · 02/04/2021 18:00

Do true. Cheapest possible naff shot these days.

Stupid. Clearly they've missed that there is a market /demand for the old style ones.
