I've just watched Mums List. Proper sobbing watching it and I don't even have children.

Eight Below, Haachi and Marley & Me are sad too.

I think I'd have to give it to Grave of the Fireflies, although Schindler's List, The Pianist, La Vie Est Belle and pretty much any other film about the Holocaust come in a pretty close 2nd... those would be more in the heartbreak category of unremittingly bleak and depressing especially as based on real events rather than 'have a good cathartic sob' type films though, if that's more what you were after? In which case I'd recommend War Horse or a lot of Pixar output, Wall-E, Inside Out, the first 10 minutes of Up! etc?

BrilliantBetty · 22/03/2021 11:46

Lighthearted: The Notebook. I'm a soppy old git when it comes to first love!

More serious: independent films about the holocaust with detailed first hand accounts had me weeping like a baby and on my mind for years afterwards.

middleager · 22/03/2021 11:48

I can't remember the name, but it's a film with Angelina Jolie, directed by Clint Eastwood telling the true story of a mother whose son goes missing and then seemingly returns.

HarkAVagrant · 22/03/2021 11:49

The one that made me cry the most was The English Patient. It may be more a reflection of how I was feeling when I watched it, my age etc - I never cried at a film until I was about 18, then spent about a decade and a half weeping at films, and have gone back to being hardhearted again!

Blueappletree · 22/03/2021 11:51

Never let me go.

Shopaholic100 · 22/03/2021 11:54

The pursuit of happiness, Marley and me and War Horse always have me in tears.

NotExactlyHappyToHelp · 22/03/2021 11:54

Stepmom broke my heart. There’s a brilliant film no one I know seems to have watched called 50/50 with Joseph Gordon Levitt that makes me bawl, it’s based on a true story and it’s gut wrenching to watch.

Not a film but a series but I’m still not over It’s A Sin.

BurgundyBells · 22/03/2021 11:55

Lion. Based on a true story, one of the best films I've ever seen.

10 Years a Slave or The Boy In The Striped Pyjamas.

SummerHouse · 22/03/2021 11:58

Titanic - started bawling in the foyer and cried all the way home. Not the soppy Kate / Leo love story but all those people.

minou123 · 22/03/2021 11:58

Sleepers - with Brad Pitt, Robert De Niro, Kevin Bacon, Minnie Driver and others.

Watched it years ago but too heart breaking to watch it again, even though it is an excellent film.

WitchDancer · 22/03/2021 12:00

I, Daniel Blake. It's heartbreaking because it's either true or based on true life. I think it particularly got to me because I volunteer at a food bank and, up until the point I saw the film, I hadn't given much thought to how our clients circumstances could be.

HelgaGPataki · 22/03/2021 12:00

Ah I agree, Lion is so sad, the little boy who plays Saroo is so amazing. I can't even imagine how scared the real Saroo must have been. I find that story so fascinating.

Titsywoo · 22/03/2021 12:02

Hotel Rwanda I think

HippoNamedBooBooButt · 22/03/2021 12:02

The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas. Have never cried so much over a film before or since. I was distraught for some time after watching as well, which has never happened with any other film. I just couldn't get it out of my head.

ExplodingCarrots · 22/03/2021 12:02

The lovely bones
The pianist

Both haunt me and move me in different ways but I always feel drained after watching them.

twinsbelly · 22/03/2021 12:04

Lion, without a doubt.

angstyalways · 22/03/2021 12:06

Seven pounds, my sisters keeper, the lovely bones, the fault in their stars and I've only seen it once but was traumatised: bridge to tarabithia (sp?)

I watched the Billie holiday Vs the US last weekend It really was a disgrace how she was treated Sad

Wineloffa · 22/03/2021 12:12

Philomena. I was a sobbing mess by the end of it. And it’s based on a true story which made it even more devastating.
