It is snowing.

RhubarbFairy · 11/04/2021 13:43

@Frownette a Stitch Fix box is a postal personal stylist service. You give the stylists and idea of what you like and what you're looking for,and they send pieces to you. You keep what you want and send back anything you don't. DH finds shopping a chore so this is ideal for him. He's now got lots of nice trousers (jeans and chinos) and is now working on updating his t-shirts, as his current ones are horrendous. I suggested he ask for a lightweight jacket as he's either got a waterproof, his ski jacket, or a hoodie. Nothing that's nice for an evening out.

We've been to rugby this morning. DS1 had a huge grin on his face when they practiced tackling, in particular when he was the one being tackled. I've dropped off the bags of clothes I had for a local women's refuge and have hung three loads of washing out.

May take the DC to the park later.

Welcome, @IWanderedLonely, and thanks for sharing your Sunday activities news. I am also a runner, currently sidelined with a torn ligament. I hope to have it surgically repaired soon. I'm also a churchgoer but am taking a rare Sunday off today.

I have the house to myself at the moment. DH was able to book an appointment this morning for DS to get his first covid jab at a pharmacy (Walgreens/Boots) about 30 minutes from us. He was scheduled to get it a week from today at a state-run site, but sooner is better, so he's having it today. He's getting Pfizer, which is what DH and I have had. I've just had a text from him saying it's done and they are heading home. What a relief. Smile

Re the cactus plants, they are pretty hardy but they do love hot weather. It's not unusual to have temps here around 33-35 C in July and August. We have central air conditioning at home, as most people do in this area. When DH lived in London he was always a bit amused by the horror everyone felt when the temps got up to 28 degrees.

It's supposed to rain all day but it hasn't started yet. What parts of the UK are still getting snow?

Weclome, @crosshatching, and thanks for sharing your gardening news. Bangers and mash sounded quite exotic until I googled it. Grin We all seem to be gardening focused this weekend.

@freckles20, I'm glad you're finding the thread calming. I really like MN, even though I sometimes feel like a bit of an outsider as an American, but MN can seem very serious at times. There are lots of issues being debated, people coping with bad situations, posters getting stabby with each other, etc. It's nice to have a thread where we can let our hair down and just share the common things in our lives. I also hope that by sharing what life is like for me as an American that it's made the US seem a little less strange to you all.

Prok the picture is beautiful, it reminds me of Japanese cherry blossom

forgetthehousework · 11/04/2021 16:20

I have been attempting to sort out bits of fabric, trying to convince myself that I do not need a bag full of tiny scraps - and I do mean tiny - so far without much success. However the bag of slightly larger bits has yielded a couple of pieces large enough to make a blouse; thus confirming that I should never throw any bits away!

MissConductUS · 11/04/2021 16:55

DS has returned from getting his jab and has retreated to his man cave. He and DH are going to go pick up lunch from the deli to celebrate his new immune system status. The rain has yet to start.

Rhubarb, I'm intrigued by Stitchfix but don't really need any new clothes. It's a dilemma.

MissConductUS · 11/04/2021 18:18

I am making a batch of the Death by Chocolate brownies, the first since Christmas.

That's a lovely plant, Prok.

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 11/04/2021 18:44

Thank you Miss - but what is it? I was told some kind of begonia.

The students vis à vis are having a good time on their balcony drinking wine, talking and laughing making the best of the mild weather, which will be gone tomorrow.

Spudlet · 11/04/2021 19:23

The bike is absolutely and utterly not rideable, other than as an elaborate suicide plan Confused Thank goodness we went with the car to collect it!

My new plan is to do it up as a project (it needs a lot of work!) and then decide whether to keep it or to sell it on and try to make a small profit in order to find a slightly better bike. It’s going to be quite a job - at the very least it needs new tyres, brakes and a chain, and I may also respray it. I’m not sure whether I’m intimidated or excited by this...!

HelenaJustina · 11/04/2021 19:36

DH and I did a 20 mile walk today - this was adventurous and exciting and I shall therefore keep it to myself.

In dull news, DC1 got the washing in while we were out as there were a couple of snow flurries. It is pleasing that they noticed and actioned this without any adult intervention!

Frownette · 11/04/2021 19:47

What time did you set off? How long did it take?

In my news I bought several gorgeous chocolate bars: dark chocolate with hazelnuts, almond and orange, and raspberry. My best friend phoned and I was so busy scoffing I choked so we agreed to talk later.

Is it rude not to put down your chocolate when someone calls?

RhubarbFairy · 11/04/2021 21:38

We had a couple of snow flurries today. Totalling about five minutes each.

How annoying about the bike @Spudlet

I had a missed call earlier. When I rang it back, it was a vaccination centre asking if I'd like to be on today's reserve list. Unfortunately by the time I called back, all the slots had been taken. I went onto the reserve list about a week ago following an email from my Head. Disappointed to not have had it today, but good to know they're working through the list.

In thread worthy news, the dishwasher cleaner is in a new shaped bottle.

Sunbird24 · 11/04/2021 21:43

The sun has finally moved round far enough that it comes in my bedroom window very briefly in the evening, so it hits my crystal and I get some little rainbows

RhubarbFairy · 11/04/2021 21:44

That sounds pretty @Sunbird24

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 11/04/2021 21:59

DS got a vacc. invite. I was afraid, I'd have to book him into one of the centers (unknown area, people, procedure), but his GP has him on his list. So he - and I - calmed down again.

And, of course, it started to rain again.

Frownette · 11/04/2021 22:01

@RhubarbFairy

That sounds pretty *@Sunbird24*
That was word for word what I was about to type.

My teeth hurt now, that'll teach me for going on a chocathon

Seafog · 11/04/2021 22:04

I finally bought a new canoe!

freckles20 · 11/04/2021 22:35

So many lovely updates, thank you all.

freckles20 · 11/04/2021 22:36

@Seafog oh crikey that is v exciting IMO. We have some sit on top kayaks and a SUP and would love a canoe. Tell us more.

RhubarbFairy · 11/04/2021 22:37

Welcome @Seafog. That sounds very exciting.

MissConductUS · 11/04/2021 22:44

Welcome, @Seafog, and thanks for your seafaring news. Smile

I've just gotten off a Zoom call with my lovely MIL and DD, who dropped a bit of a bombshell. She's been offered a summer internship at her uni, working in the neurobiology lab. If she takes it, which it sounds like she will, we will only see her for a bit at the beginning and end of the summer. It also buggers my plan for getting her vaccinated, as she'd be home for the first dose but not the second. Sad

It is a really good opportunity for her and the pay is good, and they'll provide housing. She'd have a room in one of the residence halls, which are very nice. We'd just pay for her meal plan for the summer. DH offered to match what they'll pay her so that she can put it all into her retirement account, which I thought was nice of him.

Frownette · 11/04/2021 22:46

Oh - can't she get her vaccines done now, at uni?

MissConductUS · 11/04/2021 22:53

Massachusetts hasn't opened eligibility yet to those under 30, though I expect they will very soon, so she can't book it yet. She also doesn't have a car there, but she can get an Uber.

If we have to we can drive up, bring her home for the second dose here, then take her back the next day. It would be a lot of time in the car as it's about 2.5 hours each way. Hopefully she can arrange it up there.
