A question about bath towels

ViolentFairy · 20/03/2021 18:37

We are a family of four. We have one bathroom. Two bath towels out usually as not really space for more on the towel rail. We all use the same bath towels, wash them each week.
Is this a bit rank? What do other people do? It just occurred to me that maybe now the kids are teens they might use a towel each but I wondered what others do.
Thanks

Own towels here. DHand I have 2- one in en-suite and one in our bedroom because the towel rail is tiny. My 12yr old is lucky enough to have an en-suite so her towel is in there and then the other 2 kids keep theirs in the family bathroom.

In our old house we still had separate towels but we all kept them in our bedrooms as the shower was downstairs and no room I upstairs bathroom. On radiators or in my older girls' case they had the boiler in their shared wardrobe so I added a rail each to the inside of the doors.

Llamasally · 20/03/2021 21:44

Yes it is a bit rank. My parents do this and it’s really difficult when we go to stay as we want our own guest towels but also to not make a fuss - and it’s not clear who’s is who’s and they don’t care about it.

Who wants to rub something that’s been on another persons bits on them!!??!

Chattercino · 20/03/2021 21:47

Own towels here, too. My DC's keep theirs on the radiators in their respective bedrooms.

Two in the bathroom and two over the stair rail. Each person sticks a towel in the wash when they feel it’s needed.

SpiderinaWingMirror · 20/03/2021 21:56

Roe of hooks above the radiator is the answer my friend!

smellyolddog · 20/03/2021 22:03

We have about 8 bath towels, my DS use them we use them and then I do a big towel wash weekly, most of them end up in my DS bedrooms on radiators and bedroom floors!

We gather them all up and pop them back in the bathroom.

So yes I find it really odd to think we'd all share two towels? Does that mean if all four of you shower in the morning you use damp used towels?

AWryGiraffe · 20/03/2021 22:04

Two adults and one 2 year old, we just use whatever towel we pick up first, no one has their own. It really doesn't bother me at all that my partner might have got dried on it the day before. We wash them maybe once every couple of weeks? We are obviously scummy by Mumsnet standards. I can't get my head round the need to wash towels daily.

I think when my two year old is old enough to move into the room with an en suite she can keep her own towels in there but they won't be colour coded or anything!

Kottbullar · 20/03/2021 22:04

The children keep theirs in their bedrooms. Adult DD hoards them when she's home.
When DH is here we have an annoying routine, he uses a clean towel, folds his up so it never dries, then when he comes to need again it realises it's damp then uses mine.
He is the kind of person who gets out the shower dripping all over the place and then gives himself a thorough towelling so I wouldn't want to share his.
I dry myself off a bit with a face cloth while still in the shower then wrap in a towel and faff about doing teeth, face and hair until I'm dry, no vigorous rub down.

MumUndone · 20/03/2021 22:06

@rwalker

Bath towels are like condoms they should only be used once
Why??
RedcurrantPuff · 20/03/2021 22:08

@QuitMoaning

We each have a different colour and they are washed probably three times a fortnight. They are always drying something clean but I still like a fresh clean towel to myself
Oh I like the idea of a different colour one each!

We tend to hang ours on the back of our door. The teenager’s room smells of Boy and Feet so I prefer his to be retained in the bathroom.

2020isnotbehaving · 20/03/2021 22:25

Do you all throw a hand towel in the wash after one person has dried their hands? Unless you are literally scrubbing your ass checks with it why can’t you pat down your clean body to remove water and use again?

donewithitalltodayandxmas · 20/03/2021 22:43

One each and ( 4 if us ) incl 2 teens
Towels hang on back of bathroom door , we have 4 hooks
Towel rail has just hand towel on
Nicer rail has my nicer towels but also handy if someones towels not hanging up or have guests ( when / if)
Probably wash every 4 days

Elieza · 20/03/2021 22:45

Apparently towels you use after bathing carry fecal matter on them from when you dry your nethers.

I don’t fancy drying my face on a towel from yesterday which has particles of fecal matter on it. Even if you can’t see the matter it’s likely to be there. So I use a fresh towel.

I use a reasonably thick hand towel to dry my body daily and then they go in the wash basket. My ex when he was here preferred a large thin bath towel which he used two days on a row. He had no concerns about drying his face with the towel that dried his arsehole. Each to their own.

Once towels start to smell it’s because bacteria has started to grow initially and then its started to smell. So once your towels smell you can be sure you’ve used them while the bacteria was growing. Brings new meaning to the phrase Arse-face Grin

Elieza · 20/03/2021 22:45

Oh and Ken hand towel each by the sink. Changed on second or third day. Daily if anyone has a tummy bug.

Elieza · 20/03/2021 22:46

Own. Not Ken.

donewithitalltodayandxmas · 20/03/2021 22:46

With regards to drying , they either dry on door as bathroom is warm or often after use the kids throw them over the banister and I move them to where they belong when dry

activitythree · 20/03/2021 23:00

Unless you are literally scrubbing your ass checks with it why can’t you pat down your clean body to remove water and use again?

I don't scrub my ass cheeks, but I do have to rub a bit to dry the old anus and skin around the vulva area. It's just a little bit more than a 'par'

Rillington · 20/03/2021 23:00

That is grim. Each have our own coloured towels.

BigSandyBalls2015 · 21/03/2021 07:18

We share but DH tends to pat his arse dry with loo roll .... very odd Hmm

AlwaysLatte · 21/03/2021 07:32

We've always used one bathtowel each, we have hooks like this so people know which is theirs.

A question about bath towels
AlwaysLatte · 21/03/2021 07:35

So do all the towels go in the bathroom?
The hooks mentioned are all lined up on the back of the door - first goes on the heated towel rack to dry (everyone has their shower at different times so we can just put the last towel back on the hook before using the shower).

Erictheavocado · 21/03/2021 07:36

Dh and I have always had our own towels in almost 40 years of marriage. Memories of sharing towels at our respective parents' made it a priority for us right from day 1. When dcs came along, they had their own towels and now it's just dh and I again, we still have separate towels. A combination of over the door hooks and the radiator shelves linked to earlier, meant that even at the peak, towels could always dry. As to washing, at least weekly, but more often if I feel it is needed.

Muitolegal · 21/03/2021 07:37

We do the same as you x

CherryMaple · 21/03/2021 07:38

But towels hung up on hooks don’t dry if they are big fluffy bath sheets?

Washing towels every day is madness!

Mummy1232016 · 21/03/2021 09:45

@TroysMammy

Why do people use a bath towel once and wash it? Surely you are clean when you come out of the bath/shower.
I wash mine after use as even though I know I’m clean, they’re will be lots of minuscule skin particles all over the towel because my skins now really soft and damp 🤣🤣
