The Duchess of Cambridge attends the Sarah Everard vigil

My respect for the Duchess has just shot up. For a Royal, this is pretty bold and brave.

Not forgetting other women - if you attended the vigil tonight, thank you for sticking up for women's rights. Let's hope this is an opportunity for the Met Police to review and change how they treat both offending officers and female victims

Far better to have a private vigil and a concrete set of actions to help women feel safer on the streets. Or maybe that is too much work for Kate

I don’t think the DoC can solve the problem of societal misogyny single handedly. The fact is that the most talked about/photographed woman in the U.K. has thrown herself behind this movement with her appearance today. People slag her off for never doing anything then when she does they slag her off for it being a stunt. Of course she doesn’t go anywhere without security, but in the video I saw she had a very different demeanour to her usual appearances. Her stride up to the bandstand and expression, I don’t know, I’m not a body language expert but she seemed quite angry and sad.

derxa · 13/03/2021 22:29

She didn't wear a mask because she wanted to show who she was and that she wanted to pay her respects. Despite her security, nutters lurk everywhere. Kate was hounded on the street when she was William's girlfriend. Solidarity Kate.
Flowers Sarah and condolences to her family.

Backstreetsbackalrightdadada · 13/03/2021 22:29

Better if she was identified - it’s raising awareness. And you also have NO idea about her experiences, or if she donates to refuges. I knew about George Michael donating tonnes of cash when he was alive, the lead singer of another band too gives tonnes of cash to charities outside of London. Don’t go making assumptions about someone because you don’t like the image you think you know.

Yeah Carrie symonds gave evidence against Worboys I think. A girl I knew who was really posh once chatted blithely about basically having been attacked three times at fancy occasions... this really is something that affects every woman. I’m literally the biggest stereotype about fighting class and prejudice but it was my own prejudice about these posh women that meant I didn’t see they’d gone through the same stuff. Like Camilla did a good speech about DV and how you can’t tell.

Anyway I’m glad it’s getting people thinking about the issue!

Don’t be ridiculous. She’s dated and married future king she’s had PPO for years
Her time in London she was William partner and wife she had ppo
She wasn’t some random woman in london with an Oyster card and out walking

She didn’t have a PPO until they were engaged. It was widely reported that William wanted her to have protection as she was being hounded by paps, but it was refused. So, yes, she did experience living in London as a single woman.

lurker101 · 13/03/2021 22:30

I was pleased to see she attended. She seemed to be truly sympathetic/saddened, as would anyone. She has also been a woman at university and living in London before marrying Prince W, she also has a sister, a mother, friends who will all have had to face harassment. Remember the objectification of her sister after the royal wedding? Not to mention the kidnapping of Princess Anne. Kate will be more than aware of the risks all women face, even those with security. The individual arrested on suspicion of Sarah’s murder works for a similar (if not the same) team of people she entrusts her and her childrens lives to, I imagine this feels very close to home for her, despite how far removed she may seem from the outside.

Goldieloxx · 13/03/2021 22:30

She went earlier today to try and get a bit of good PR, she didn't even bother wearing a mask

Theimpossiblegirl · 13/03/2021 22:31

The royal family should have stayed the fuck away from this when they are blatantly protecting someone like Andrew.
This 100%. She seems nice enough but this is tone deaf as per usual. How can their pr team not join these dots?

HeelsHandbagPerfumeCoffee · 13/03/2021 22:31

Nest of visors you say
The aww this place has gone to the dogs, that’s a well worn trope
Trotted out usually when one is disagreed with and too think skinned to tolerate it

@MeribleMelon

Mumsnet has turned into a nest of vipers, no wonder it’s on the decline. So many of my friends have given up on it. I’ve just been called ridiculous for suggesting she was just supporting other women. I don’t think I’m a ridiculous person, I was just trying to be kind. But Be kind didn’t last long did it? Why the need to turn on each other? This used to be such a lovely place to come, in the last 5 years it’s really turned a corner.
It's definitely been a bit of a week on here.
Truelymadlydeeplysomeonesmum · 13/03/2021 22:31

I just thought she wasn't wearing a mask because it was outside

This thread is horrible. Women attacking other women.
So sad it has turned into this.

Jellykat · 13/03/2021 22:32

Merible just ignore them!!

JamesMiddletonsMarshmallows · 13/03/2021 22:32

Some of you lot are ridiculous. You want a member of the Royal family to start muscling in on arrests and stop them from happening? JFC. Simply turning up to show her respects then going home like the VAST majority of women did, is something to be condemned? Grow up.

I'm not sure arrests will have even been made whilst she was there?

@PicsInRed

This is about women supporting women.

Marvellous. Perhaps she'll crack on fronting up a large, national fundraising effort for women's refuges then? And for charitable domestic violence services, presently starved of funds? Or assist in raising national awareness about domestic and sexual violence and fronting an education programme? You know, actually advocating for women?

No? Ah.

Seriously?

So the hundreds of women and children's charities she's already involved with or patron of, isn't good enough for you?

Amazing to see so many angry women raging about women's rights whilst throwing bile at women that don't fit their narrative of how a woman should be.

Misogyny at it's finest .

Benjispruce2 · 13/03/2021 22:32

I don’t wear a mask outside. It’s not necessary, especially in these winds.

Because they are counting on the gullible plebs who don’t question why millions are spent each year on people who can afford their own security ten times over while police jobs are slashed in tens of thousands.
PicsInRed · 13/03/2021 22:33

At least three of the charities she supports have domestic violence programmes.

She needs to be out front and directly involved with raising awareness and raising funds, the way she is with early years. The problem is that women's rights is a very political topic, particularly for men, and I guess a decision has to be taken as to whether that's something she wants to spend and risk her profile on.

I'd like to see her do it, it would be hugely helpful and she would be an asset to the movement if she chose to take part.

Exactly this - she was 29 when they got engaged and lived in London that whole time. Of course she'd have had exactly the same experiences as other women

For sure, this move by KM was always going to bring a proportion of cynicism. However, I'm surprised at the strength of feeling in those who are cynical. PR move or not, this is about coming together as a collective and remembering Sarah. This is an important moment, and one that many hope, triggers positive change. This needs to be the focus, and KM's attendance, a footnote.

Mumsnet has turned into a nest of vipers

Has turned into? Thought it's always been?

Is it also a nest of vipers when posters are tearing into MM's every word and action or only when people are talking about the hypocrisy of posters on Kate/MM and the RF?
