My respect for the Duchess has just shot up. For a Royal, this is pretty bold and brave.

Not forgetting other women - if you attended the vigil tonight, thank you for sticking up for women's rights. Let's hope this is an opportunity for the Met Police to review and change how they treat both offending officers and female victims

It matters if it's a PR stunt (which it can't not be, given the lack of mask) because this isn't about opportunism for the royals in their hour of need. It's somewhat larger than that.

Truelymadlydeeplysomeonesmum · 13/03/2021 22:23

Maybe like me she would have stayed away. Then read how the poor young woman was found and how they heeded to identified her by dental records. Needed to do something to show respect after hearing that.

That kind of puts the car crash interview and all the comparing of Kate and Meghan into the back of your mind. Well it would if you are a decent person.

MeribleMelon · 13/03/2021 22:23

Good for her, she has been a single woman walking home in London. I felt this really resonated with her. Big respect.

@Coffeeandcocopops

So what if it’s a PR stunt.

Good on her for going. She didn’t have too.

Seriously? We are happy with people using this tragedy for their PR on tax payer security?
Sparklingbrook · 13/03/2021 22:24

So many assumptions on this thread.

OneFamilyToRuleUsAll · 13/03/2021 22:24

@megletsecond

If she wore a mask people wouldn't believe it was her. She wanted to make it quite clear who she stood with and pay her respects.
In other words, she wanted to be seen and knew she would be?
loopeydoopey · 13/03/2021 22:24

SakuraEdenSwan1 appalling, but not surprising. Hope all is well with you now?

Londonmummy66 · 13/03/2021 22:24

I attended the vigil at 6pm and I was really touched to hear that she had gone to the bandstand earlier - good for her and shame on the police who later arrested women just for speaking.

JamesMiddletonsMarshmallows · 13/03/2021 22:25

@SakuraEdenSwan1 so sorry to hear that. And I agree that, IME, female officers were much much worse than male officers. Swooning over a charming man bullshitting his way through what didn't happen Sad

After this incident, I feel like there should be a public inquiry as to how much money can be saved from protecting every Charles Dick and Harry that is getting tax payer funded security and especially those who can pay for it themselves, like the royal family.

Brefugee · 13/03/2021 22:26

I bet she didn't get smacked around and dragged off by the police though, eh?

HeelsHandbagPerfumeCoffee · 13/03/2021 22:26

Don’t be ridiculous. She’s dated and married future king she’s had PPO for years Her time in London she was William partner and wife she had ppo She wasn’t some random woman in london with an Oyster card and out walking
paulhollywoodshairgel · 13/03/2021 22:26

I thought it was a nice thing for her to do. My actual 1st thought was she's not wearing a mask 😷

Speedtheplow · 13/03/2021 22:26

Seriously? Slamming down on the DOC because she paid respects. Sheesh! But let's all #BeKind, eh?! I despair.

MeribleMelon · 13/03/2021 22:26

Jesus Christ, can’t women support other women? Why the vitriol?
We’ve enough to contend with.
Can’t we just appreciate that she supported the cause against female violence today? She’s a woman, she has lived in London for many years.
What’s wrong with her turning up to pay her respects?
Women slagging her off are part of the problem!

Madmarchlockdown · 13/03/2021 22:26

@lunarlife

I can't believe that as women, we are going to create an artificial conflict between two women we actually don't know that much about. Because one of them commemorated the brutal murder of another young woman.

Seriously we have got to be capable of behaving better than this.

THIS.
HarkAVagrant · 13/03/2021 22:26

@PicsInRed

This is about women supporting women.

Marvellous. Perhaps she'll crack on fronting up a large, national fundraising effort for women's refuges then? And for charitable domestic violence services, presently starved of funds? Or assist in raising national awareness about domestic and sexual violence and fronting an education programme? You know, actually advocating for women?

No? Ah.

www.royal.uk/the-duchess-of-cambridge At least three of the charities she supports have domestic violence programmes.
PicsInRed · 13/03/2021 22:27
@PicsInRed for someone who fiercely defends MM and her actions here on MN I'm surprised you have so much vitriol for KM attending a tribute of a murdered woman. they're not enemies, you do know this? There are no sides to take here.
Using this for a photo OP is gross.

If she's had a life changing moment and from now on she will focus her power and profile towards improving the safety and position of women then I will fall right in behind her.

JamesMiddletonsMarshmallows · 13/03/2021 22:27

@Brefugee

I bet she didn't get smacked around and dragged off by the police though, eh?
Would you have been happy if she did?

Must we really wish that all women have the shortest experience because a few did?

FFS she instead received security from them that WE the plebs paid for Hmm
DateLoaf · 13/03/2021 22:28

Good for her for going. Quite right too.

HeelsHandbagPerfumeCoffee · 13/03/2021 22:28

@Brefugee

Correct.She wasn’t roughly handled put in a prone position and cuffed
OneFamilyToRuleUsAll · 13/03/2021 22:28

@Brefugee

I bet she didn't get smacked around and dragged off by the police though, eh?
Bet she didn't do anything to stop it from happening either. She set a bad example and was there with protection while other women were vulnerable, being manhandled and dragged off for breaking the rules, wasn't she?
JamesMiddletonsMarshmallows · 13/03/2021 22:28

If she's had a life changing moment and from now on she will focus her power and profile towards improving the safety and position of women then I will fall right in behind her.

Maybe she has but because she isn't in fact public property she doesn't have to tell anyone about it

Mumsnet has turned into a nest of vipers, no wonder it’s on the decline. So many of my friends have given up on it.
I’ve just been called ridiculous for suggesting she was just supporting other women. I don’t think I’m a ridiculous person, I was just trying to be kind.
But Be kind didn’t last long did it?
Why the need to turn on each other?
This used to be such a lovely place to come, in the last 5 years it’s really turned a corner.
