How do you Laundry?

No i'm not mad, i promise.

I do everyone's washing in turn, so all of DS's, then all of DD's, then all of Mine, then towels/bedding, and start again.

Do you do that, or do you do a mix and just split everyones into darks/colours/whites?

Whites, darks, brights. All 5 peoples mixed in together.

Chasingsquirrels · 13/03/2021 16:52

All in together (1 adult, 2 teens).

PaperMonster · 13/03/2021 16:53

Whites, darks, brights, yellows (we have lots of yellow and I once had a white load go yellow, so they’re done on their own now), then OH’s work clothes.

CurlyhairedAssassin · 13/03/2021 16:55

You each must have a lot of clothes. There wouldn't be a full load of one person's darks for a week or two in our house.

All our dirty laundry goes in one basket (except for bedding which goes straight in the wash - one load is from mine and DH's bed and another load is for the DS's single bedding sets, in both together). With other clothes, when I have enough for a load of darks out of the shared washing basket, I'll do them. when I have enough for a load of whites/lights I'll do them. I don't tend to put all the towels in together as our stupid eco washing machine doesn't rinse properly and and 2 of us have eczema so I just throw one of them in with some darks, and wash them on a hotter wash now together every now and again for hygiene's sake (but have to rinse them in the fecking bath Hmm and then spin them).

I thought everyone did similar?

CurlyhairedAssassin · 13/03/2021 16:57

meant to add, the shared washing basket never overflows as I don't let it. So I do a load every couple of days through the week, and bedding at the weekend.

dementedpixie · 13/03/2021 16:57

I mix by colour and will do some of everyone's if they have dirty washing in the right colour
E.g. whites, mixed colours, dark colours

hiredandsqueak · 13/03/2021 16:57

Whites, Darks, Brights, Towels, Bedding, not sorted by person at all once the babies were toddling.

Blancah · 13/03/2021 16:58

Whites, darks, pastels and then brights.
Towels separate, bedding separate - purely because 2 bath sheets, bath mat & hand towel and then a king size duvet, 4 pillowcases and bed sheet are generally one load each anyway so it just works that way.

OilBeefHooked · 13/03/2021 16:59

2 baskets, 1 whites/lights, 1 colours/darks. Wash when full which is approx 6 x week dark and 2 x whites.
One day a week all the towels are washed.
Then I attempt wash 1 set of sheets every other day - 5 beds plus hand/tea towels that so go on at 60.

CurlyhairedAssassin · 13/03/2021 17:00

While I'm thinking this, I'm now wondering what happens when teens go off to uni. I lived at home in my first year then moved into a rented flat which didn't have a washing machine at first but just took clothes to my muum and dad's home to wash every week.

What do students do who don't come home all term? They must have a lot of clothes to make up a full load of their own, or do they share a load with mates or something? Do halls of residences have enough washing machines?

youmakemydreamscometrue · 13/03/2021 17:01

There's only me and DH but I have a very complicated washing system!
Work uniforms washed separately from everything else.and each other if I can
Gym clothes/training clothes separate from everything else.
Lights, darks, colours washed separately.
Towels/cleaning clothes separate
Bedding separate.
I'd wash underwear separately too if I could get away with it!

CurlyhairedAssassin · 13/03/2021 17:01

@Chasingsquirrels

All in together (1 adult, 2 teens).

I once got given some baby clothes from someone with an all-in approach to washing and they were all grey and manky.
Before anyone calls me ungrateful - it was a completely unsolicited You should have these drop and go situation. They all went straight to charity.

I did my own at the laundrette, add in towels & duvet cover and that's a machine full a week. I'm pretty sure I didn't separate whites then though.
SnugglySnerd · 13/03/2021 17:04

We have a laundry basket in each bedroom so that's one for dh and I, one for the dts who are 3 so get through quite a lot of clothes and one for older dd who is at school so uniform has to be washed.
I do: one load mine and DH's stuff combined, 1 load school uniform plus anything else dd1 has worn in the week (and often chuck a few extra bits of other people's in with this), 1 load dt clothes all together, 1 load whites, 1 load of handwash stuff (using the delicates setting on the washing machine) which is mostly mine plus the occasional cardie or jumper belonging to someone else and 2 loads of towels each week plus 3 lots of bedding over a fortnight. We wear most stuff twice although the dts get a lot of dinner/paint/mud all over themselves so their stuff if often just worn once.
Our machine is on at least once a day. I did 3 loads today because it was sunny and windy so I knew I could get it all dry.

HazelWong · 13/03/2021 17:04

We do everyone's separately. No colour sorting (don't really have any whites). Find this much less annoying than having to sort the clean stuff into different rooms- this way, I can take a whole basket into one child's room and put it all away. It takes a week or so for each person to build up a load - I don't think that's that many clothes!

StarryStrawberry · 13/03/2021 17:05

We put a wash on every day. In the morning I sort out the basket into 4 piles: Darks, light blue/greys, whites, red/pinks.

Then I put whichever pile is biggest in the washing machine (often the blue/greys). Doesn't matter what belongs to who Smile

Chasingsquirrels · 13/03/2021 17:05

Blancah my "all in together* meant everyone's clothes, not whites, darks whatever - they get separated into whites/lights and colours/darks but all of everyone together.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 13/03/2021 17:05

I dont sort on colour. I grab a loads worth from the basket and shove it in and turn it on. If the load is only half full I go grab the bath mat/draining mat/teatowels etc to fill it up.

Pebbledashery · 13/03/2021 17:06

Bedding done separately
Gym clothes done separately
Towels done seperately
Everything else is put in together, don't have many white clothes!

MegaClutterSlut · 13/03/2021 17:07

Everyone's washing gets mixed together but into Darks, lights, pink/reds, towels and bedding

Crookairroad · 13/03/2021 17:07

All in but darks and whites separate. Usually 2 dark washes and 1 white wash a week.

Then 2 lots of bedding a week and a towel wash.

marriednotdead · 13/03/2021 17:08

Whites, darks, my undies. Lights/brights in summer, none of us wear pastels. Sometimes a jeans/turquoise wash as I've some towels that seem to run forever no matter what temperature I use.
DS does his own. Black, grey, anything else. Rarely wears whites so they go in with mine.

Rillington · 13/03/2021 17:10

I do a separate whites wash. Everything else goes on together.

Piglet92 · 13/03/2021 17:12

I do our work clothes together (we work together on a farm so just jeans, shirts and jumpers etc)

Daughters separate, sometimes with my lights to bulk out the load.

Then our good clothes.
