How do you Laundry?

No i'm not mad, i promise.

I do everyone's washing in turn, so all of DS's, then all of DD's, then all of Mine, then towels/bedding, and start again.

Do you do that, or do you do a mix and just split everyones into darks/colours/whites?

Shove everything in at once on a 40 wash.

I don't separate anything. Life is too short and I've never had a colour run ever.

garlictwist · 13/03/2021 18:38

Just DP and me in our household. We put everything in the basket and I wash it all together twice a week.

Never separated into darks/lights/whatever.

Sparklynewname · 13/03/2021 18:38

I have one of those laundry baskets shown up thread. It gets put in there as whites, lights, darks and towels. When a basket is full it gets brought down and washed.
In the summer we may have brights too but they will be put in lights or darks and if there are a lot of them I will do a brights wash. I make everyone strip their beds so I have enough whites to do a whites wash and DS just has to wait for his white tshirts to come through the system.
I did 3 loads yesterday evening after work and folded 4 last night. I have done probably 7 loads today (eurgh) with one still in the washing machine and one still in the dryer. The rest has been folded and put away or put back onto the beds already.
I have collapsible laundry baskets to fold clean washing into (I did have 4 but DD appears to have taken one when she moved out) and they live one the worktop above the washing machine.
I hate folding and putting away washing so I am trying to get better at forcing myself to do it the day it’s dried or the day after.

StiggyZardust · 13/03/2021 18:39

Separate by colour for clothes. Socks and underwear in one load, towels and bed linen separate as well.

Londontown12 · 13/03/2021 18:40

I do the same as you op I do everyone’s separate! It’s like a never ending cycle 😊 x

Chooseausernamenow · 13/03/2021 18:40

My husband and I have a washing basket and our adult son has his own basket. I do his washing separately by darks and whites, or he does his own by the same methods.

Our basket gets split up into darks, whites, reds. I do a separate towel wash and a separate wash for tea towels (usually use two or three a day) and cleaning cloths.

Bedding goes in on its own and straight in the dryer.

I usually put a wash on, in whatever form every couple of days. Sadly, I enjoy doing the washing.

MissingLinker · 13/03/2021 18:41

Separate whites and colours but that's it really. Everyone's goes in together, then it goes on clothes horse/radiator/washing line to dry. Then, whatever needs ironing will be ironed and everyone just takes what's theirs.

Laundry's something where, because I never have cause to talk about it IRL, I just assumed everyone did broadly the same.

(Also, WHO has 14 sets of uniform per child???)

millenialblush · 13/03/2021 18:41

By colour- darks, whites (usually only once a week), and colours. Then towels and bedding less frequently than MN would like to know about...

huuuuunnnndderrricks · 13/03/2021 18:42

@AlwaysLatte I have one of them in my utility room .. I love it ! It has a rail on top for drying hanging items too!

therocinante · 13/03/2021 18:42

Everything in together - we don't really have any white/light clothes - except towels and bedding.

Mummaofboys93 · 13/03/2021 18:43

Family of 3 soon to be 4.

All clothes put in together but separated by darks, lights, whites & then I also wash anything that has white with colour as well separate.

DP work stuff gets put on a seprate wash as his clothes are always filthy!

DC single bedding goes into the wash together.

Our bedding alone.

Towels & tea towels go in on a 90.

Cleaning cloths go in together.

Cat bedding alone or sometimes with towels if the towels need bulking out.

I was throws alone.

Once baby arrives his washing will be the only person who's stuff goes in separately to everyone else's clothes, towels & bedding.

playthegame · 13/03/2021 18:45

Family of 6 including baby. I do 1 or 2 washes a day.
I separate lights/darks/colours. Baby washing is done separately.
Also a load of towels once a week, each persons bedding gets done once a week and the reusable nappies twice a week.

WeatherwaxLives · 13/03/2021 18:46

Mine and DPs lightstogether, mine and DPs darks together, bedding in with either lights or dark or with towels, 4yo DDs all together regardless of colour as I use a long cool cycle and stain remover on hers, DPs work clothes (builder).

WeatherwaxLives · 13/03/2021 18:53

Crikey - do kids really do a full uniform change every day?!

When I was at school I had one jumper that lasted all week, 1 or possibly 2 pairs of trousers, but 1 usually lasted all week. Only thing changed daily was socks/pants/bra/shirt!
At primary I think I had 2 jumpers.

I still wear a jumper and jeans multiple days, is that not normal?!

H1978 · 13/03/2021 18:54

5x darks, 2x whites, 4x towels/microfibres cloths and 3x bedding a week.

Dd1(19) does her own laundry but she owns mainly black clothes so all in together.

GrumpyMiddleAgedWoman · 13/03/2021 18:54

Darks, lights, delicates, hot wash (which is white cotton sheets, towels and teatowels)

DrunkenKoala · 13/03/2021 19:01

Everyone’s goes in together.
We do dark, light and white washes at 40
Bedding, bathroom towels, tea towels and dishcloths at 60
(And when we’re allowed again) Mine and DD’s swim costumes, towels and DS’s football kit all go in together at the weekend.
Family of 4, DC are 11 & 6.

trilbydoll · 13/03/2021 19:04

It's much easier to put away if you keep each person's separate but with 2 dc in red school uniform (but white shirts) it would take forever to get through it if I separated by both person and colour.

I can't mix up colours for washing, putting white shirts in with a red cardigan and some black leggings would probably cause me physical pain.

EileenGC · 13/03/2021 19:05

What do students do who don't come home all term? They must have a lot of clothes to make up a full load of their own, or do they share a load with mates or something? Do halls of residences have enough washing machines?

I sometimes didn’t go home for 6 months 😂
We had 8 washing machines for about 2,000 students which sounds really low but somehow there was always a free one? As long as you didn’t go on Sunday at 2pm when everyone would’ve woken up from their hangovers.

Everything got chucked in together and washed at 30 degrees. 40º after new black jeans, etc had been washed 2-3 times, so they’d be safe in with whites. I would do a load every 8-10 days so that’d be 3 pairs of jeans, 6-7 tops and 10 pairs of underwear and socks, 1-2 PJs. Plenty to fill the machine. Towels and bedding separately, once in a blue moon as doing one load of washing was £5 and I was broke enough as it was. I quickly learnt to change out of uni clothes as soon as I got in, because I needed to get two wears out of them.

When I moved into a shared house then it was just a normal washer that we could use whenever. 14 pairs of Primark underwear and socks meant you only did laundry once every fortnight, to try to keep the bills low. I also used to wear a plain black top under my work shirt so I could get enough wears out of it. 6 shifts a week and only 2 work tops, in a freezing cold house in the middle of January, there was no hope of them drying overnight.

We had a lovely housemate who washed his underwear and socks in separate washes on top of whites and darks, PJs and bedding/towels, as that’s what his mummy used to do at home Hmm He was easily responsible for half the energy and water bill as he did 3-4 loads a week of washing, plus warm his PJs every night in the dryer before his shower, so he wouldn’t be cold when coming out. This routine didn’t last long, after he saw the first amended bill come through.

RagzReturnsRebooted · 13/03/2021 19:07

We don't have enough clothes to do a load per person! I do white/light cottons, dark/coloured cottons and synthetic. Neighbour was horrified I don't seperate darks from colours but I was at 30/40 and they don't seem to suffer. Plus most of our clothes are dark to be fair!

CurlyhairedAssassin · 13/03/2021 19:12

I don’t wash my clothes with my partners as I then have to work out which pants are mine etc, where as I know my pants definitely aren’t paw patrol.

I used to do a couple of loads a week (2 machines at the same time).
Between bedsheets and clothes, you fill a washing machine very quickly, even as a student

CurlyhairedAssassin · 13/03/2021 19:14

Will someone explain to me the difference between lights and whites (in laundry terms)? And brights and darks? Because for me these would be just 2 loads, not 4. Never had any issues and I am aghast at the idea of putting everything in together.

In my white, I only ever put pure white.

Lights, I have light grey, light blue, or some white and pale colour.

I tend to wash red with black, works well!

Cookerhood · 13/03/2021 19:17

Darks, lights, whites, reds. All family together. My student offspring just wash everything together & think I'm mad but their clothes all go grey. They also tumble dry absolutely everything. I guess there's nowhere to dry things in a student room.
