No i'm not mad, i promise.

I do everyone's washing in turn, so all of DS's, then all of DD's, then all of Mine, then towels/bedding, and start again.

Do you do that, or do you do a mix and just split everyones into darks/colours/whites?

My weekly washes:
1 towel wash
Adult bedding every week
Kids bedding every fortnight
White/light 2/ week
Darks probably 2/3 per week

Uniform included in those washes.

For uniform I expect shirts to be washed every time they're worn, and skirts/trousers to last 2 days. PE kit washed after every use.
Blazers washed termly

We certainly don't have 14 sets of uniform! That would cost a fortune! My kids grow a lot- we'd be swamped by uniform!!

Whites, blacks/navy, colours,

EileenGC · 13/03/2021 22:18

*I can't think of any clothes I own in pure white, for this exact reason. Life's too short.

This. Anything ‘white’ I own could become grey/pink/light blue and I wouldn’t care.

I still remember my mum frantically checking there wasn’t anything left by mistake in the washing machine before chucking in my dad’s white shirt he only wore at church. Only pure white item in the house and the machine had to run on 60 for 2h just for that...

Clevs · 13/03/2021 22:25

We have one washbin which everyone's clothes goes into. I wait until there's enough to do either a white, dark or coloured load so there's a mix of everyone's in there. Bedding and towels get done on their own. We have white bedding though so sometimes chuck a small amount of whites in with it if there isn't enough for a white load on it's own. I prefer not to though because the clothes get tangled round the bedding and don't wash properly.

Allgirlskidsanddogs · 13/03/2021 22:28

Laundry bag upstairs gets brought down when full or at the weekend.

Laundry sorter in the utility room. Clothes are sorted into White, Lights, Brights and Darks and done when there is a full load, sometimes I will combine close categories and maybe use a colour catcher. I do towels as a separate load, same for bedding. Tea towels are saved til I’ve used nearly all and washed on the hottest wash. Swim kit is washed when I’ve got 2 or more kits and is done on a 30 degree quick wash.

Carbara · 13/03/2021 22:34

The amount of unnecessary extra work people choose to take on is so weird.
I don’t own anything white.
We are childfree. Barely enough for one load of washing a week, towel load once every month or two once there’s enough to do a full load of them on hot, no fabric softener, obv.

addictedtotheflats · 13/03/2021 22:35

Whatever is in the pile goes in the machine. Lights darks everything. 2 adults, 1 child usually just one load a day unless we're doing towels or bedding. I hate laundry

TheChosenTwo · 13/03/2021 22:58

Dds do their own, they have their own wash bins in their rooms.
Me, dh and ds all share one wash bin and I do that washing. (Ds is 9, the dds are older teens.)
I grab a bundle and shove it all in the machine together. Darks, lights, whites, yellows, pants, hoodies, whatever is in there and whoever it belongs to - it all gets dumped in the machine together. I sort absolutely nothing. I couldn’t care less and if dh or ds suddenly start caring they are more than welcome to wash their own clothes too.

Lol, you judge us for "unnecessary extra work" but I judge you for only washing towels once a month? You either don't wash or your towels are damn near fit to walk themselves to the basket. Yum.

MusicTeacherSussex · 13/03/2021 23:02

After 8 years of his clothes not being put away and mine not being hung properly, I do my own only. His can pile up and when he does a wash and leaves it to dry for more than 2 days, the clothes horse goes into his office.

40somethingJBJ · 14/03/2021 01:00

We rarely have whites (I don’t possess anything white and teen ds is a bit goth!) so everything goes in together once the washing basket is full.

Shopaholic100 · 14/03/2021 02:54

Whites
Darks
Lights
Towels
Bath mats/shower curtains
Bedding
Delicates/jumpers/special care

I have a black basket for the dark/light clothes and a white for the whites. Darks and lights are combined sometimes depending on how many. Bedding is usually just washed and dried and put back on the bed because I love the freshly washed smell. Towels are washed and dried the same day too.

cerealgamechanger · 14/03/2021 03:00

I do:

Children's clothes together: three piles of darks, lights and brights

My clothes: darks and lights

Husbands clothes: darks (he doesn't have many light coloured clothes)

Bedding together- the children's bedding gets prioritised

Towels together

Bath mats and cleaning cloths all in together.

cerealgamechanger · 14/03/2021 03:06

I also have a hand washing pile that I obviously do separately.

I used to love laundering and was very regimented with it but since having children, it's become one big chore since I can't ever get the system completed properly :/

WhatWouldPhyllisCraneDo · 14/03/2021 03:15

I split into dark/ light/ colours and wash everyone's clothes together. Then a towel wash and a bedding wash.
I've got 2 adult sized teens and can't see how they'd fill the machine by themselves in a week. Unless they didn't split by colours. Even then I'm not sure they'd fill it!

nameisnotimportant · 14/03/2021 03:30

I do washing Mondays and Thursdays. Usually a white wash, a dark wash, a gentle wash which includes the kids teddy bears, comforters, soft toys etc. Mondays is towels and then work uniforms and Thursdays are the bed linen. I hang it all up to dry that day and then take it down a day or two after. I take it off and fold into piles and then it goes straight away into the wardrobes, so I never have any washing piles that need sorting out

mathanxiety · 14/03/2021 04:01

Whites/ towels/ bathmats (all white)
Cleaning cloths/ aprons/ kitchen cloths - I have loads of these and wait until I have a lot before washing them
Bedding
Darks
Lights
Clothes which I know from experience tend to bleed, incl some bedding
Wool/cashmere/washable silk

I sort according to the temperature of the load and whether I use bleach.

I have a dryer and some items don't go into it. I have to separate non-dryer items from each washed load except bedding (all to the dryer) and wool wash (they all go on the rack).

I used to do a wash a day (5 DCs) but I'm down to twice a week now. Wahey!

Ifailed · 14/03/2021 05:21

We had a lovely housemate who washed his underwear and socks in separate washes on top of whites and darks, PJs and bedding/towels, as that’s what his mummy used to do at home

At least he had some idea about washing his clothes, and didn't just assume the magic laundry fairy would do it for him. When I was at college, I was amazed at the number of students who'd go home with a rucksack full of dirty clothes just to get mummy to sort it out for them, both male and female.

LemonDrizzles · 14/03/2021 05:35

2 adults, a 5 yr old, a 1 yr old.
all together ( certainly didn't when dc1 was 1 tho!)

  • my and dc2 dresses together
  • all of our shirts together
  • all of our wool or synthetics together
  • sports wash
  • whites
  • rest of the children's clothes
ThisConundrum · 14/03/2021 05:36
  1. All colours go in together—with a colour catcher—whenever the bedroom laundry baskets are getting full (this includes school uniforms, which get changed daily)
  1. Whites are washed separately, two loads per week
  1. Towels go in at 60°c, twice a week
  1. Bedding goes in as one weekly load
  1. Hospital uniforms separately at 60°c, each week.
Mrbob · 14/03/2021 05:43

What do students do who don't come home all term? They must have a lot of clothes to make up a full load of their own, or do they share a load with mates or something? Do halls of residences have enough washing machines?

You mean like single people... What a weird question

ThisConundrum · 14/03/2021 05:46

@WeatherwaxLives you asked about changing school uniforms daily?

I thought the whole country was asked to do this since COVID?

I’ve been doing it since chemo to protect my impaired immune system too.

Saves that whole... is it clean? game each day in the dark winter nights when I like my cosy, dim lights to be on (and not bright spotlights to check uniforms over!). Much prefer it!

HopingForOurRainbowBaby · 14/03/2021 06:33

All goes in together

Mummysgonetobed · 14/03/2021 06:40

Darks, lights, reds (uniforms!), whites, towels, bedding.

I cannot get my head around doing everyone’s separately. It’d take me more time to sort that than to do it! 3 children and do a load most days.

Bloodybridget · 14/03/2021 06:42

There are only two of us. Just do lights or darks as necessary. Try to do on days when I can hang outside.
