How do you Laundry?

No i'm not mad, i promise.

I do everyone's washing in turn, so all of DS's, then all of DD's, then all of Mine, then towels/bedding, and start again.

Do you do that, or do you do a mix and just split everyones into darks/colours/whites?

It's never crossed my mind to do soeperste family members washing (except maybe the dogs). I separate by colour and do towels separately (although will sometimes bung white towels in with whites instead to make up a load.

WeatherwaxLives · 14/03/2021 08:02
@WeatherwaxLives you asked about changing school uniforms daily?

I thought the whole country was asked to do this since COVID?

I’ve been doing it since chemo to protect my impaired immune system too.

Saves that whole... is it clean? game each day in the dark winter nights when I like my cosy, dim lights to be on (and not bright spotlights to check uniforms over!). Much prefer it!
Quite possibly they have - DD isn't at school yet, so I wouldn't know.

It was just such a stark contrast between what I remember from my school days and people saying they have 14 full sets of uniform - where do they keep it for a start?!

cliffdiver · 14/03/2021 08:03

DH's clothes (he does his own)

My clothes

DH and my bedding and towels

DD's bedding and towels

DD's clothes

Cat towel and blanket on a quick wash.

Chocolatehabit · 14/03/2021 08:07

Glad I’m not the only one who separates colours- my MIL thinks it’s weird that I do! She literally puts black jeans in with white shirts which makes me stressed! When we stay at theirs (or did!) I had to hide our dirty clothes in our suitcase so she didn’t wash them and then tumble everything!

midnightstar66 · 14/03/2021 08:13

I think they realised pretty early on - back before schools fully reopened after summer holidays, that covid wouldnt be carried around on clothing. I remember being asked to do this for hub schools last May but not since opening in August.

We have two of these, one for me and my husband and the other for the children. I just keep an eye on them and wash the section that is fullest next...I work at home two days a week so generally catch up then and at the weekends.

Although I split loads according to dark/colours/whites, I am a big fan of colour catcher sheets as well for added protection.

Ifiwasadaisy · 14/03/2021 09:14

Lights, darks. (We own very little white stuff.) That’s it. Don’t care who it belongs to and if I have space and a towel is the right colour it goes in with clothes. Sheets generally make up a load by themselves, but I’ll mix with clothes if needed. Only things I am picky about being separate are things covered in pet hair and if I put the kids trainers in they go in alone.

Juanbablo · 14/03/2021 09:15

Everyone's in together. Separate lights and darks. Wash bedding and towels on a higher temp.

ChocOrange1 · 14/03/2021 09:20

My husband and I share a washing basket, and my kids share one. I put all our lights in together because I only own about 4 white items, so if I was going to wait and do my own white wash they would never get done!

Also I usually end up doing 3 or 4 loads in quick succession, put them all randomly in ikea bags and then spend an evening sorting and folding them.

IceCreamAndCandyfloss · 14/03/2021 09:20

Dark wash, white wash and bedding if needed and certainly don’t separate into different people as would be a waste of resources.

WaxOnFeckOff · 14/03/2021 09:30

When DS went off to uni, we made sure he basically had enough clothes for 15 days. He only wears dark colours and got him darkish bedding so essentially everything can go in together. It was big industrial machines at uni. He'd also bring a bag home if he was coming back.

He has a normal domestic machine in his flat and shares with his girlfriend, I have no idea if they do theirs together.

In the house there is DH, adult Ds1 and I, mainly the washes are mixed but DS1 tends to gather his in his bedroom for ages so his ends up being done seperately. DH has allergies so we stick to an unperfumed powder but I get DS to add in some extra antibac type stuff to his as he has it lying about for ages.

minniemoocher · 14/03/2021 09:33

When younger all clothes together (bedding on rotation). At 16 I bought them laundry baskets. When exh decided to separate (stayed in same house for a while) I bought him a laundry basket too (yes he continued to put his washing in the communal laundry basket)

Crowsaregreat · 14/03/2021 09:36

Everything together. I can't be arsed separating whites and darks, we just don't wear white! Nappies, towels and bedding washed separately but only because they fill the machine. Most stuff done at 40. Seems ok?

MrsHusky · 14/03/2021 09:44

the other reason i do everyone's separately is because i dont have a laundry room, just the kitchen

To do everyones together would mean having to either plunder everyones basket for washing each time, or having it all over my kitchen.. its easier to ask one person to bring their basket down, separate out the very few white bits, wash it, dry it, put it all back in the basket and send it back upstairs with the relevant person.

ThisConundrum · 14/03/2021 17:58

Yeah but wouldn't you have to do lots of half loads that way?!

It doesn't take long to delve into all baskets and make one wash to keep everyone freshly up together with laundry!

WhatWouldPhyllisCraneDo · 14/03/2021 18:04

I don't have a laundry room either. Just a very small kitchen. Earlier I asked the dc to put all their dark washing in the machine. Last one to load it turns it on. After dinner they'll do the same with their white school shirts. After I've dried it I fold it up and they take it to their rooms and put it away.

DuesToTheDirt · 14/03/2021 18:12

What do students do who don't come home all term? They must have a lot of clothes to make up a full load of their own,

They wash once every one or two weeks, and bung everything in together - towels, whites, darks.... Survival of the fittest!

ZZTopGuitarSolo · 14/03/2021 18:18

No we dont do half loads - if anything I wince at how my teens overload the machine. But we don't have uniforms and they have plenty of clothes, and they're all tall so their clothes aren't teeny.
mathanxiety · 14/03/2021 18:19

I have two big baskets in my small, galley-style bathroom. Everyone dumps all their clothes into the clothes basket there. The other basket is for towels and other whites.

I sort clothes in the bathroom (lights/darks) leaving heaps on the floor. I schlep the basket down two flights of stairs from my apartment to the basement, then bring the remaining clothes (or whites) down when I transfer to the dryer.

I always end up with a full load. I pay for the gas for the dryer (US) and the hot water heater (downstairs neighbour pays for winter heating gas for the furnace) so I don't want to waste money on small loads.

The wool wash is cold and doesn't go in the dryer so I don't mind doing a small load for that.

ZZTopGuitarSolo · 14/03/2021 18:20

My older two go to universities that have free washing machines in every residence building. They even have an app that tells them which machines are full/empty/finished. Bit different to my experience of university

mathanxiety · 14/03/2021 18:22
 • When I say I schlep it all here and there/ I do laundry, I include the two DDs living at home this year - they do their share. I probably do one wash in three.
Angel2702 · 14/03/2021 18:23

Separate by colour not person. Do a dark wash every day, whites once a week and then several bedding loads. Would never occur to me to split the washing by person.

KettleWentBang · 14/03/2021 18:37

All clothes together but I'm very funny with mixing.
I wouldn't even put baby blue in with baby pink. Some loads have 2 or 3 items!

Towels

T towels and cloths.

Bedding which is about 3 loads for all of us.

Ds1 is done separately as he has different products.

Mummaofboys93 · 14/03/2021 19:32

@Rainydays200 I wash towels on a 90 & don't use any fabric softer as it makes the towels less absorbant.

Practicalprat · 14/03/2021 19:44

Always whites, darks, brights.Does nobody do pants and socks together.
I never wash pants and socks in with other clothes, shouldn’t they be washed at 60,most everything else is 30/40 or delicate.
