How do you Laundry?

No i'm not mad, i promise.

I do everyone's washing in turn, so all of DS's, then all of DD's, then all of Mine, then towels/bedding, and start again.

Do you do that, or do you do a mix and just split everyones into darks/colours/whites?

I just wash everything together. Colours don't run.

At university I just did a wash when i needed to. Possibly weekly?

realunicorn · 13/03/2021 19:22

I generally on a weekly basis do;

2 towel loads - could probably squeeze them in together but I prefer to split the large load
2 bedding loads ( 4 beds)
1 white load - sometimes i thorough this in with the lighter coloureds as it's just a toddler vests usually.
5 darks
1- 2 coloured loads depending mainly on whats been worn but generally it's quite a gothy household so primary colours are black/blue/burgundy lol

Each persons gets mixed together.

We have a nice big wide benched area over the washer and the dryer... the stuff comes out of the dryer onto the bench and generally sits there for days until I sit and sort what needs ironed and what needs put in draws. I'm very proactive getting the stuff washed and dried but that's where my enthusiasm ends Grin

No we don’t sort clothes either, as don’t have any whites or fancy fabrics (at the moment!). One wash on a day, just wash whatever’s needed most. Put away later while kids in bath. Towels, socks, bedding, and underwear on hotter wash though.

SleepingStandingUp · 13/03/2021 19:49

@WeatherwaxLives

Crikey - do kids really do a full uniform change every day?!

When I was at school I had one jumper that lasted all week, 1 or possibly 2 pairs of trousers, but 1 usually lasted all week. Only thing changed daily was socks/pants/bra/shirt!
At primary I think I had 2 jumpers.

I still wear a jumper and jeans multiple days, is that not normal?!

It depends what you do.

DS comes home and wears his uniform until bed. It's probably got lunch down the cardigan or dinner. The tops probably could last two days but o put sets on coat-hangers. Trousers once he's played outside, scrawled around the floor, had dinner etc also need washing.

I'm clumsy and busty so ways end up with something on my top, plus crawling round after two babies, feeding etc it Def all needs the wash.

DH would wear jeans a few days mostly but a clean t-shirt daily

Shirts/Polos and anything visibly dirty daily, otherwise jumpers, trousers and (senior school) blazers and ties weekly.
SleepingStandingUp · 13/03/2021 19:55

And actually we've been asked for clean uniform every day since Covid

OrangeBananaFish · 13/03/2021 20:09

I mix everything together, but sort by colours. Darks, whites, pink/red and blue/green.

I have a system and tend to do certain colours on certain days. I have enough school uniform to last all week so whites and reds tend to just get done on the weekends. Bedding goes next to the basket and I manage to add bits to the load during the week (Each bed has two sets so on a Sunday I can take the dirty off and replace with the clean that has been washed throughout the week). I also do a towel load (although some go into the red or blue load) at the weekend.

My children genuinely think I enjoy sorting laundry and doing the washing I do and once I actually dreamt I was stood by the basket sorting into colours.

I just wish that the rest of the family put things in the basket rather than just on top, but apparently thats far too difficult Grin

morekidsthanhands · 13/03/2021 20:11

I do darks, whites and towels. I do a load a day but I have three toddlers and a dog that wets the bed Star

This post has reminded me of the time my old next door neighbour put a load of washing out to dry that was entirely orange! Who has enough for an orange load!?!

Rainydays200 · 13/03/2021 20:15

Lots of you do a specific towel wash. I’ve never done that, is there a reason why you do? Different cycle? Just wondering if I’ve been missing something

makes life so much easier!

If they come back with a pristine jumper or trousers, it's great. It's VERY rare, but some weirdest things have happened.

When they don't, no stress in the evening about frantic washing and drying to be ready the following day.

All my kids have a lot more than a set a clothes per day to last a week, so I took the same principle with uniforms. I haven't got the time or dedication to wash school clothes every single day.

Their white tops really stay white by only been washed with whites I have to say. (so do mine)

I tend to wash mine at 60, but even if I just add them to a normal load, they bulk up quickly, so in sheer quantity towels add a full load per 2 persons roughly.

Partly because I've found putting towels in with clothes leaves annoying fluff on the clothes and partly because we have two bathrooms, each with a full set of towels in ie, 2 bath sheets, a hand towel and a floor mat. They all fit in one wash easily and I always wash the full set together at the same time.

ZZTopGuitarSolo · 13/03/2021 20:26

There are 6 in my house all 15+. Everyone does their own laundry.

Most of us just chuck darks and lights in together. If I had something white I really cared about then I'd wash the white towels with it.

I've had enough sorting of clothes for a lifetime and hope never to have to do it again.

Only DH irons anything - work shirts and trousers.

We don't have school uniforns, which makes it easier as the kids can wear pretty much anything to school.

BlibBlabBlob · 13/03/2021 20:30

@Rainydays200 I do a separate towel and cloth wash because that's the only stuff I don't wash at 30 degrees. They need to be done at 60, no fabric conditioner either, for hygiene reasons.

Actually that's not quite true, in summer I have 100% cotton bedding that I also put through at 60 degrees because it can take it and it keeps it whiter! Most of the year though we use synthetic bedding so 30 degree washes.

NoParticularPattern · 13/03/2021 20:31

I mix everyone’s together and separate by whites, pastels, brights and darks. Then bedding/towels/dishcloths etc get washed separately usually also by colour (except bedding which is a full load per set and we have 4 king size to change). Then there’s husband’s work stuff which is a full load every day. I usually run the washer twice a day on average but that’s mostly because I don’t like to tumble dry anything other than towels so I’m restricted by hanging space rather than amounts of washing.

BlibBlabBlob · 13/03/2021 20:34

To all those lumping whites in with colours at 30 degrees, I used to do that too. It worked fine. Except when I compared those white clothes to a brand new white t-shirt that DH had bought, it was clear they were actually a less-than-attractive shade of very pale grey. Just sort of made them look scruffy.

A friend told me that she always did whites separately, at 60 degrees, because it kept them white. Revelation. Have been doing that ever since and my whites really are still white!

Haha that reminds me that my post above wasn't quite right, everything's done at 30 in this house except towels (all the time), bedding (in summer when we have cotton) AND the weekly whites wash. Thankfully both DD and DH are in possession of enough white school tops / t-shirts to last a full week. Yay for George at Asda and Primark for selling very affordable polo shirts and t-shirts.

ZZTopGuitarSolo · 13/03/2021 20:36

I can't think of any clothes I own in pure white, for this exact reason. Life's too short.

OddsNSodsBitsNBobs · 13/03/2021 20:43

Whites. Darks. Blues/purples, reds/pink/orange, yellow separate. This however is rare, generally always a white and dark wash x 2 a week (2 adults and 2 Teens) colours are very occasional

HighInTheHills · 13/03/2021 20:50

Darks/lights/colours separately throughout the week whenever I have enough for a load (usually a load a day) plus flannels and tea towels chucked in daily.

2 loads of towels on a Tuesday, super ling bedding on a Friday, 3 x DC single/cot bedding on a Weds.

I chuck half a colour-catcher in when I'm doing a coloured or dark load, seems to help keep the colours fresher.

DH filthy farm clothes go on separately whenever he has enough for a load - I refuse to do them as I hate checking his pockets for nuts/bolts/bits of tractors/bailer twine/grain! He has his own dirty laundry basket too as they're usually so revolting.

rainbowfairydust · 13/03/2021 21:09

Family of 7 here so I tend do a mix of everyone's dark clothes, probably every other day is a full load, one white wash a week, one pink load a week and then bedsheets split into one lot of duvet covers and pillow cases, and one lot of bed sheets. Then all our towels together too. My oh washes his clothes once a week as he likes to make sure he has everything he needs ready for the week... If I did his washing I can guarantee he would be looking for things that weren't ready.

I have been known to find Christmas jumpers in the bottom of the laundry basket in summer though! I hate putting the machine on just for a few items so quite often stripy things or a couple of cardis sit at the bottom of the basket for ages till I can bring myself to do a small load!!

RavingAnnie · 13/03/2021 21:09

Whites and pale yellows, darks, reds, lights, woollens, bedding, towels, waterproofs.

RavingAnnie · 13/03/2021 21:11

Oh and cleaning cloths/tea towels.

DHs socks are also currently done on a separate boil wash as he has fungal nail.

OldRailer · 13/03/2021 21:16

Mix it. Otherwise loads too small.

Sunshine1235 · 13/03/2021 21:18

Just separate lights and darks here, washing every day and alternate as needed. Get to keep an eye on who is low on what and ensure a mix of everyone’s stuff gets washed most days. At the weekends I do towels and bedding.

Todaytomorrowyesterday · 13/03/2021 21:18

I sort family light/darks hot wash and light/darks gentle wash.
Bedding
Towels
And cloths tea towels etc

I live such an exciting life ...
