What shall we name our house?

Where I'm from all the houses have names instead of numbers.

We're moving into a new house next month and we'd like to change the current name of it.

It's a bungalow on a corner plot but The Corner House just doesn't have a nice ring to it!

Any ideas hive mind? Thank you!

Got to say, Norman is a most excellent suggestion. And the name plate will make you smile every time you see it, which is a nice thing.

Perhaps you could put a little statue of a Norman soldier by the path, or a picture of the Bayeux tapestry in the lobby. So everyone would say, "Oh, do you have Norman heritage or something?"

And you could just side-eye them and snap flatly "No." and quickly change the subject.

It'd be a "Bungalow of mystery".

I saw a bungalow called Ersanmyne once which I thought was clever and lovely.

LubaLuca · 11/03/2021 19:54

The name has to be something personal to the building and/or its environs. Is there a view? What was the land used for before it was built on? Are there any interesting trees in the garden?

Our house has an unusual name but we don't use it. We found it's easier to have a house number and street when Hermes is trying to find your house.

I saw a Fookem Hall once Grin

Whatever you decide, don’t make it something personal to you that the next owner will have to change again. We nearly bought a house with a name that was a mash-up of the owners’ names. Not quite as bad as Casa Bevron but along those lines. I looked into changing it and it looked like it would be a right pain. Think of all the websites where you put in your postcode and you have to select your house. Imagine how long it would take for them to catch up. The house purchase fell through in the end though sadly Sad

actually - a bungalow could probably pull off Balonz

TheFutureFreaksMeOut · 11/03/2021 20:00

We don't live in the UK and houses here don't have names and numbers, just names.

It's easy to change, we did it with the one we're in now. You just tell the advocates you want to change and they wrote it into the new deeds. Costs a couple of hundred quid I think.

The house we're in currently has had a new name with every owner!

The one we're buying is named after a town in Ireland which is where the current owner is from. It's got a view of a field and a main road 😂

Norman would honour Norman the Foreman (see the Playmobil threads) and he would be greatly appreciative of this as @SoMuchToBits will testify.

Being practical, getting this registered with the Post Office may be a drag.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 11/03/2021 20:03

🤞 Norman 🤞

KezzabellaB · 11/03/2021 20:04

Field View. Boring but true 😂

1dayatatime · 11/03/2021 20:06

Definitely go with "Norman". - it's unique and will make you and others smile which I itself is something precious and needed from something as mundane as a house name.

Dicks Mount Cottage

CommunistLegoBloc · 11/03/2021 20:08

I think The Corner House sounds quite nice. Much better than The Elms or something completely clichéd.

MrsCalypsoGrant · 11/03/2021 20:09

@FrankiesKnuckle I've often threatened to call my house Dalentrace! Or Brooksmead like Martin & Ann's house in Ever Decreasing Circles 😀

^ essential information before responding, no?

If it's a newish bungalow, rather than a particular period build and the garden has no distinguishing features then people would usually choose something applicable to the area or go for a favourite idea of their own, say a bird or a special place name, or something from a book. That way it's meaningful for you and doesn't necessarily put off any future owners.

We lived in a place with a name and no number once, the name was horrendous, luckily we were renting. The people who eventually bought it changed the name. I don't think it was actually that hard at the time (England) Not sure how accurate this blog is, but it's a start maybe?

The house in the fantastic book Life After Life is called Foxes Corner and is described really vividly as a lively family home. I always remember Foxes Corner as a great house name.

AdaColeman · 11/03/2021 20:22

Look at old maps of the area for inspiration, or pick a nearby feature eg River View or Marsh House. Or use the name of a house or place from fiction.

SoMuchToBits · 11/03/2021 20:23

Oh @peak2021 you have made me laugh with that! Grin

Norman the Foreman would be very pleased to have a house named after him. Here's a photo of Norman enjoying a cup of takeaway tea from earlier last year.
