Its more to do with Class than race,

I still clearly remember all the horrible things said about The Middletons, the press really tried to dig as deep as they could to print any bad press, they mocked their business , Caroles job as stewardess, MC background , uncle Gary? Remember him?

I remember various threads on MM too about how it was all Caroles planing for Kate and will to end up together. Posters questioning how they could afford private schools, holidays in Mystiques and so on.
I bet if there was more stories they wouldn’t hesitate in printing it.

With Meghan , she had the misfortune of being born into a dysfunctional family. The press couldn’t let go of her dad or her sister, they were so good , the perfect example of crazy, loud Americans.

I won’t watch as I have lost all respect for Oprah years ago.

@MagicSummer

What gets me is why they think they are so important. Harry is now well down the line of succession and will never be King (thank goodness)! By the time George, Charlotte and Louis have grown up and had kids themselves, they will be sidelined in the way that Princess Margaret and her children were, and to a lesser extent, Andrew, Edward and Anne. I am sick of the doe-eyed, 'poor little me' look, and the constant hand-holding and adoring looks.
Sums up how my MIL and SIL in the US feel about it all. Couldn't care less. But people think the US loves them. Most don't give a fuck.
Mummy195 · 07/03/2021 12:49

Beatrice and Eugenie live relatively ordinary lives working etc and we don't hear much other than official articles in the press. Same with the Tindalls.
What I don't understand is If Harry and Meghan want the quiet life why don't they just do that rather than constantly pushing themselves forward into the limelight.

They never said anything about a quiet life, Infact they listed 4 tabloids they would not work with, stating they are liars - the same ones who harp on about quiet life. They then said they would work with subjective International papers as well as smaller media who have no agenda.

Ofcourse we never hear about the other royals. All guns are pointed at H&M. If anything others are potrayed as the rwhite royals.

I just said it's a shame for you that you can't bitch about her to your heart's content without being accused of racism in your opinion.

I think it's something along the lines of 'leave us to do our bigoting in peace'

You must surely know by now that any black woman who shows any support for MM goes down in esteem.
See Serena, Beyonce etc.

If there is no out way, and it's just too obvious then its all about how great and more deserving that person is than to associate with MM, for that see The Obamas.

Dimples13 · 07/03/2021 12:55

Hilarious - the British press liked Meghan in the beginning, they did not!
Also why do White people say the English/British are not racist, how the heck would you know, what are your experiences of this.
I am in a mixed family and my husband who is White sees the racism often.

Absolutely

Harry was always likely to be slightly over protective of his wife, given what he saw happen to his Mother at such a young age.
His wife was treated appallingly at times. So was Diana, (Fergie & Kate far less so). The British Press is vile and misogynistic. But there was also a good deal of shameful outright racism towards MM too.

MM is a person whose background may have made it hard (er) to cope with this treatment (no strong family like Kate), her career involved being in the public eye / courting the press, and it was her 2nd marriage so she was no young ingenue like Diana. Hard, even so.
Like Diana, MM is now possibly wanting to 'give as good as she got', or at least to tell her side of the story from her point of view. Only MM has Harry on side and Diana was alone in it. Of course both Diana & MM have 'made mistakes' but that doesn't mean they deserved their treatment or should not 'speak out / reply' if they wish to, it's their right. But they will get slaughtered for doing so & so it goes on...
I don't think it was ever likely to end well sadly.

Do I 'feel sorry for the Queen'? - in a way, but she needs to (privately?) wash her family's own dirty linen re Andrew (& the RF long association with Savile was distinctly unsavory too) before MM is too crucified. Whether HM's declined to do so or has been unable to I'll never know.
I won't watch but I will read (here probably!) out of curiosity yes.

No one is saying that. They are just saying that not every single criticism of a black person is racist.

Mummy195 How long do you reckon before someone pops up to say I seem awfully invested in this? When they realise they're exposed they then start with the personal attacks Grin

MagicSummer · 07/03/2021 13:00

Don't you remember the nasty stories about Fergie, always headlined 'the Duchess of Pork' and the criticism of her clothes, her figure, her expressions, etc.?

Par of the course. lol Then there is the railroading you, that you must say something bad about MM, otherwise you are too positive, whether you have seen evidence or that or not. All the while it's ok to go on a diatribe post after post without ever saying anything good about them.

Ironically, the ones who accuse are the ones who come bash, way more than those who defend.

Ask @Roussette , @Samcro and others.............................

Liquorishtoffee · 07/03/2021 13:03

Sophie got a bit too - not to the same extent. Remember when someone dug up the photo of someone pulling up her top to flash her boobs?

Are you seriously comparing that to coverage of Megha, who had 50 negative stories published about her in one paper on one day? 🤔 twitter.com/uk_domain_names/status/1367791929619058689?s=19
MissConductUS · 07/03/2021 13:06

Meghan Markle, for all that she is, never stood a chance. She was absolutely hounded by the press the same way Diana was. Was it because she was black? Probably. Maybe even because she was American.

It's absolutely because she's American. No one on MN would make blatantly racist comments but slagging off Americans and the US in general is practically a competitive sport here.

PicsInRed · 07/03/2021 13:08

This. I think Meghan loved her Dad, you can see this in her written memories of him. Reading the same, he probably loved her in his own way - though he appears to have difficulties which impede communication and insight and Meghan's sister appears to have the same. Meghan had been able to manage an ongoing relationship with a difficult father by carefully keeping a safe distance, as many women with dysfunctional families choose to do in order to retain family ties without too much harm to themselves.

Then elements of the press (and the Palace - Jason Knauff) identified these dysfunctional elements of her family and intentionally exploited them, wound them up and whipped them up into a frenzy for ratings and to totally humiliate Meghan. I think that when Meghan says "so much has been lost already" she means the total destruction of any relationship with her father's side of the family.

The press and elements of the Palace did that on purpose and it's really quite venal and unforgivable.

Remember the news machine is a hell of a lot bigger than it was in Diana’s - and even Kate’s (early) days.

We have online ‘news’papers and social media 24/7 ripping everyone apart and desperate for click bait.

Yep lots of dodgy comparisons going on to make a point. No logical discussion allowed only emotive shouty censorship.

Yes I do very clearly. But Diana and Fergie weren't photoshopped as gorillas too like MM was, & I think SM has made it much more pervasive than it was in the 1980's
