Best song of the 90s

DH and I had a few wines last night and fell down a YouTube rabbit hole listening to 90s music. We then got into a heated debate about what the best song of the 90s was.

My vote - Set You Free by NTrance

His vote - Live Forever by Oasis

For clarity, we were both mid teens during this decade.

What's your stand out song of the 90s?

All the songs. Can't pick just one. Except maybe U2 "One" which I wanted to play at my funeral (bloody morbid teenagers!)

Also Tori Amos "Silent all these years"

As a blast from the past, not my favourite but loved it at the time how about listening to voice of the beehive " monsters and angels"

There are monsters, there are angels
There's a peacefulness and a rage inside us all
There is sugar and there is salt
There is ice and there is fire in every single heart
There are monsters, there are angels

Zen - have you heard the version with Mary J Blige? I love it.

ZenNudist · 17/03/2021 23:07

No, off to Google!

@ZenNudist

No, off to Google!
Hope you enjoy it

Now I've moved in my head from the Gin Blossoms to Tori

Do you think there's a heaven
Where the screams have gone
I've got 25 bucks and a cracker
Do you think it's enough

Tori Amos' first album has got to be one of my all time favourites although I loved all of her 90s and many 00s albums by her. Ditto all Bjork's 90s albums.

Liked the Mary J blige with U2 video thanks. She brought a very different energy to it.

I began the 90s aged 16 and left then at 26 and despite enjoying music I don't know most of the songs mentioned here! I never liked Oasis, felt they were massively over rated. Pulp not really my cup of tea. I wasn't an angsty teen though! Songs that sum up the 90s for me are Whigfield (Saturday Night), Madison Avenue (Don't Call Me Baby) Shakira and Ricky Martin definitely feature and also liked Savage Garden. The songs I remember are linked to nights out dancing which is probably why I remember them.

Ooh, more keep coming back to me. DeeLite - Groove is in the heart
Black Box, Ride On Time - dancing in Quadrant Park in Liverpool
In Liverpool we had a club which was a boat on the Mersey. I remember everyone sitting down holding hands in a circle as James, Sit Down... played🤭

StooriMelon · 22/03/2021 07:38

Perseverance by Terrorvision was a good one. Whales and dolphins, whales and dolphins, yeah!

Frazzledd · 22/03/2021 07:54

They're replaying the 1990's TOTPs on BBC4 (series linked). It amazes me which songs have stood the test of time, others (that I loved then, notsomuch now...!)

Currently Maria McKee still number 1 with 'show me heaven'....Berlin 'take my breath away in there, Betty Boos moved on from 'doing the do' to 'where are you baby' - deelite 'Groove is in the heart' always a classic.....a few weeks ago Timmy Mallet was number 1 with 'itsy bitsy teenie weenie.....' Shock

Times have changed.....

The indie stuff (Happy Mondays 'kinky afro' in there), the only stuff that seems just as good today....

God, sooooo many.

I was 16 in 1993. Started the 90s listening to love songs and dreaming of my first kiss, literally ended it (NYE, 1999) in bed with then fwb smoking spliff and listening to Faithless on low. So many memories tied up in this thread, from first love and Queen on while we snogged in his bedroom while his mum at bingo, to ibiza with my mates in 1999.

If I absolutely had to pick one it would be Pulp. Common People was THE anthem but Babies and Disco 2000 were also iconic. But I don't have to pick one fortunately. But am going to get home from the school run, bang 90s pop on Alexa and blitzt my housework off while thinking of the past.

So I have had this tab open in the back of my phone for over 2 months until I could find the time to go through it and take a trip down memory lane!

Such a fab thread, I couldn't not turn it into a playlist on my Spotify!
So here it is, over 24 hours of fab music inspired by you lot in case any of you wanted to but didn't have time to make your own! Grin
