Best song of the 90s

DH and I had a few wines last night and fell down a YouTube rabbit hole listening to 90s music. We then got into a heated debate about what the best song of the 90s was.

My vote - Set You Free by NTrance

His vote - Live Forever by Oasis

For clarity, we were both mid teens during this decade.

What's your stand out song of the 90s?

OP posts:
1990s · 07/03/2021 22:51

Absolute agree. It's one of my chosen funeral songs, along with As by George Michael and Mary J Bilge.

LOVE that version of As.

1990s · 07/03/2021 22:54

@Anthilda

I cant look at the full thread tonight. Hearing 90s songs is bitter sweet and I think I might cry at the thought of how long ago it seems and that most of the friends I had in the 90s are no longer in my life Sad

My first thoughts were
Wannabe by spice girls
Gangsters paradise
Seal, kissed by a rose
Mmm bop by Hanson

Not my favourites but deffo conjure up memories

With you. Also interested in the time machine.

Just realised what my current user name is.... and it came exactly from reading a thread like this a while ago!

1990s · 07/03/2021 22:56

@23PissOffAvenueWF

You Don’t Know Me - Armand Van Helden.
A cracker.
FrankiesKnuckle · 07/03/2021 23:07

I love the 90s - spanned my mid to late teens and early 20s.

Rave, indie, Brit pop, dance and club culture, trance.... so glad I was present!

My one thrown in would be this

But really, the only true top tune from the 90s is Unfinished Sympathy.
The tune is pure perfection. I listed to a 6music podcast with Rob del Naja about the recording of it, so interesting.
It's 30 years old that track. Still sounds so fresh. Goosebumps every time I hear it.

LongIslandIcedT · 07/03/2021 23:07

Meatloaf I'd do anything for love but I won't do that

GoneCrazy · 07/03/2021 23:12

All of 90s RNB truly a golden era

VetOnCall · 07/03/2021 23:24

Oh Yeah by Ash takes me right back to seemingly endless teenage summers in the late 90s. As does I Don't Want to Wait by Paula Cole - the Dawson's Creek theme song. So many memories!

Other favourites...
Lovefool by The Cardigans
Girl From Mars by Ash
You Oughta Know and Ironic by Alanis Morisette
Good Riddance (Time of Your Life) by Green Day
Livin' La Vida Loca brings back crazy fun memories of a holiday with my school friends the summer of '99, between our A levels and us all going off to university

Lots already mentioned... Common People, Live Forever, One, Don't Speak, Born Slippy, The Masterplan, Iris, Wannabe, You Get What You Give, Losing My Religion, Smells Like Teen Spirit, Everybody (Backstreet's Back), Basket Case.

Not my favourites but Truly Madly Deeply, Man! I Feel Like A Woman, ...Baby One More Time, I Don't Want To Miss A Thing, Torn (Natalie Imbruglia), The Boy Is Mine, Cecilia (Suggs) and Breakfast At Tiffany's all bring back loads of teenage memories too.

TheSkipper · 07/03/2021 23:35

So many great tunes already mentioned. Brings back many happy teenage memories. Unfinished Sympathy and Teardrop still get regular airtime here. Goo Goo Dolls, Iris, too.
Some I haven't seen mentioned, but apologies if I've missed them!
Baby D - Let me be your fantasy
Living Joy - Dreamer
Sneaker Pimps - Spin, spin sugar
Josh Wink - Higher state of consciousness
Takes me back to hot summer clubbing nights 😭

JimmyJabs · 07/03/2021 23:36

It's All Coming Back To Me Now by Celine Dion. That was a proper banger you could do histrionic karaoke to. Same with Stay by Shakespeare's Sister, which I saw a pair of friends doing on Stars in Their Eyes once, and to my annoyance I have never been able to find on YouTube. They had a topless man lying on a stretcher who they had a tussle over during the instrumental, like in the video. I can remember watching it with my dad and brother and the three of us being unable to speak for some time after the performance was over...

Meatloaf I'd do anything for love but I won't do that
But what wouldn’t he do? Did we ever find out? My mind boggled.
EggyPegg · 08/03/2021 13:17

But what wouldn’t he do? Did we ever find out? My mind boggled.

It literally tells you in every single verse.

'I won't forget the way you feel right now, oh no, no way'
'I won't do that'

'sooner or later you'll be screwing around, it'll all turn to dust and we'll all fall down'
'I won't do that'.

(It may be one of my most beloved songs ever)

knackeredcat · 08/03/2021 14:14

Songs that take me right back to a club night I went to which played a bit of everything. I'm slim, wearing an a-line leatherette mini, lurex tights and big stompy boots, necking Two Dogs alcoholic lemonade. Good times.

Depeche Mode - Enjoy the Silence
Stereo MC's - Connected
Anything by Suede - the DJs were obsessed with them
Pulp - Common People
Manic Street Preachers - You Love Us
Prodigy - No Good (Start the Dance)
Atlantic Ocean - Waterfall
Opus III - It's A Fine Day
Sheep On Drugs - 15 Minutes of Fame
Goodmen - Give It Up (Simply Red nicked the drums from this)
Usura - Open Your Mind (back to the 80s with Simple Minds samples)

I wish I could go back...

PoochiePlush · 10/03/2021 10:15

Rhythm is a Dancer - Snap

PoochiePlush · 10/03/2021 10:28

Macy Gray - I try

Labobo · 10/03/2021 11:32

@PoochiePlush - I forgot about Macie Gray - she is magnificent. I love Do Something too. Used to play that if I ever felt unmotivated. It gets you going again.

@Labobo yes!!! I almost forgot too but it suddenly came to me. Thai has been such a blast from the past and so good to remind myself of all these amazing tunes!

Jabba2020 · 10/03/2021 11:50

Rhythm is a dancer - snap
What is love - Haddaway

Yes. I remember hearing her for the first time and stopping what I was doing and just thinking, 'Yes!'
QuentinWinters · 11/03/2021 10:53

Just caught up on the whole thread after posting on p2 and the song I haven't seenbut loved (still do) is You're not alone by Olive

LIamaDelRey · 11/03/2021 17:45

The Verve Bitter Sweet Symphony if I was choosing an anthem

But personally and it still sounds gorgeous Stars by Dubstar

Foodroofandfamily · 11/03/2021 17:51

Cba to read through the whole thread. But as my name implies I am a huge Levellers fan. Do my vote goes for. One Way. Total anthem where i lived. As soon as it came on in the clubs your whole body jumped along with the floorboards.

Foodroofandfamily · 11/03/2021 17:52

So my vote... bloody fat thumbs

LIamaDelRey · 11/03/2021 17:54
