DH and I had a few wines last night and fell down a YouTube rabbit hole listening to 90s music. We then got into a heated debate about what the best song of the 90s was.

My vote - Set You Free by NTrance

His vote - Live Forever by Oasis

For clarity, we were both mid teens during this decade.

What's your stand out song of the 90s?

My DH met in the 90s he recorded the All Saints debut album onto tape for me. He added this on to the end. It was a bit of a shock to hear as I wasn't expecting it, but I loved listening to it. I still love it now because as a PP said, it's wrapped up in nostalgia for me.

Mayzee · 07/03/2021 09:02

Oh wow, this thread has every song I’ve ever loved 😍
My 90’s nostalgia nowadays is heavy on the dancey ravey side...faithless, prodigy,
Sandstorm by Darude
Cafe del mar -energy 52
Not over yet-Grace
Silence -delirium
Beach ball - nalin & Kane
9Pm-ATB

blast all of the above and have a dance around the kitchen -you won’t regret it Wink

HearMeSnore · 07/03/2021 09:08

DH and I have been listening to Absolute Radio 90s while decorating - so many songs I'd forgotten all about.

Cornflake Girl by Tori Amos! Took me right back to my grotty little student digs.

Let There Be Love by Simple Minds - I was starting A-levels and trying to attract the attention of a certain upper sixth former.

Beats International - Dub Be Good To Me - my first visit to a nightclub.

I don't think any of these would be the best song of the 90s but the nostalgia is intense!

EggyPegg · 07/03/2021 09:08

Ignore my previous link. It was the wrong edit and didn't open with the classic sound.

This!

Lots of these songs bring nostalgia as the 90s was such a great decade, full of optimism and fun. It was a brilliant decade to grow up in. (like a previous poster I was 10 at the start of the decade and 20 at the end).

The best album has to be Ben Folds Five 1995 album which includes Philosophy and other brilliant songs. It's the only album from the 1990s that I still listen to.

JimmyJabs · 07/03/2021 09:42

Yes, This Summer by Squeeze! Hardly anyone else seems to remember that one. Ditto The Other Side of Summer by Elvis Costello.

doctorhamster · 07/03/2021 09:45

I've just created a 4.5 hour Spotify playlist from this thread. Thanks everyone Grin

HerculesMulligann · 07/03/2021 10:06

Early nineties was all about the grunge for me so:
Outshined - Soundgarden (also - massive crush on 1990s Chris Cornell)
Alive - Pearl Jam
Anything from Nevermind - Nirvana

Later nineties is more about memories, times and places:
Eagle eye Cherry - Save tonight
Dana International- Diva
Verve - Bittersweet Symphony

WowIlikereallyhateyou · 07/03/2021 10:15

I can’t decide, it’s between....

Paul Van Dyk For an Angel
Fugees Ready or Not
Bittersweet Symphony Verve
Unfinished Sympathy Massive Attack

ThrowingAShellstrop · 07/03/2021 10:17

OMG what a thread!! I was a music obsessed child in the 90s and was very much honing the indie/rock thing.

Too many to choose from by has anyone said Sonnet by the Verve yet?
Waterfalls TLC?
But Dreams and Linger by the Cranberries - pure 90s

ThrowingAShellstrop · 07/03/2021 10:26

@BritPopBabe

Also, the 90s was the spiritual home of the novelty song the greatest of which is surely I'm Too Sexy by Right Said Fred.
Was it a novelty song though? I feel it’s a great song in its own right (and my kids love it). I recently remembered Deeply Dippy by RSF (thanks Fearne Cotton!) and it is just an absolute belter. Couldn’t stop smiling!
AndeanMountainCat · 07/03/2021 10:39

I need to include these two even though they were released in 1989. I danced to them a lot in the 90s. Especially at the old JB’s in Dudley!

Made of Stone - Stone Roses

and my favourite song in the world ever

Here Comes Your Man - Pixies

Labobo · 07/03/2021 10:45

MissisBee · 07/03/2021 10:48

Pulp disco 2000 or Natalie Imbruglia torn

EggyPegg · 07/03/2021 10:50

Oh, another that I don't think has been mentioned yet;
Iris by the Goo Goo Dolls

DrMaryMalone · 07/03/2021 10:54

Also the dance remix of Professional Widow and Breakfast at Tiffany’s which was huge at the time.

CandidaAlbicans2 · 07/03/2021 10:54

Faith No More - Epic
Pearl Jam - Jeremy
Guns n Roses - Live and Let Die
Metallica - Enter Sandman

@Titsywoo, just as I’d chosen you mention these corkers. Such great songs 😎

CandidaAlbicans2 · 07/03/2021 11:07

@HearMeSnore, so glad you mentioned Absolute Radio 90s as I didn't know such a thing existed. Listening to it now 🤗 👍

JimmyJabs · 07/03/2021 11:08

I would also like to add that, if you watch the video for Justified and Ancient, Tammy Wynette does a little steering wheel mime when she sings "and they drive an ice cream van" and it is adorable 🤣

InglouriousBasterd · 07/03/2021 11:29

Breakfast at Tiffany’s - Deep Blue Something
Wake up Boo! - Boo Radleys
Sugar coated iceberg - Lightening Seeds

Takemebackto98 · 07/03/2021 11:30

Love this thread.. have such great memories tied up with the 90s music scene. Hard to choose, but I never get bored of these:

James - Laid (and Sit Down)
Suede - Wild Ones
Radiohead - Fake Plastic Trees (And the rest of the Bends!)

Katjolo · 07/03/2021 11:35

Yes to En Vogue!

InglouriousBasterd · 07/03/2021 11:46

Don’t let go - Envogue
Back for good - TT

BikeRunSki · 07/03/2021 11:53

The Second Coming is a stupendous album. The guitar riff on Love Spreads is terrific, much copied (badly) in halls of residence up and down the land.

But I am inclined to agree with Live Forever and Common People for nailing the zeitgeist. I was 19 in 1990. The 90s were my time. I’m still only 26, right?
