Best song of the 90s

DH and I had a few wines last night and fell down a YouTube rabbit hole listening to 90s music. We then got into a heated debate about what the best song of the 90s was.

My vote - Set You Free by NTrance

His vote - Live Forever by Oasis

For clarity, we were both mid teens during this decade.

What's your stand out song of the 90s?

Can't choose...too many! Great musical decade.

StooriMidori · 07/03/2021 12:12

@namechangerforthisconfessionn I'm a Happy Hardcorer I mentioned Discoland and QFX Feel So Good, as my faves upthread! Also Scoot-ah, are you readyyyyyyy!

Can I get an 'ooa ooa' 😂

@whatisthislifesofullofcare How could I have forgot James?! 'Sometimes' is a brilliant song!

@Cam77 Have to agree re Masterplan! I think Don't Look Back in Anger is more iconic, there's something about an entire crowd singing 'soooooo Sally can wait..' that Masterplan on stage just can't beat!

For my fellow Indie kids, I reckon we'd have to add Not Alone by Bernard Butler, Dolphin by Shed Seven and Love is the Law by the Seahorses to the list!

StooriMidori · 07/03/2021 12:15

@chuffoff I share your pain about Ian Brown! It's shite when your heroes turn out to be twats innit? 😭

PS Has anybody mentioned 2 Unlimited yet? 😀

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 07/03/2021 12:26

Firestarter - The Prodigy

DrMaryMalone · 07/03/2021 12:36

@StooriMidori you have similar hard-core tastes to my DH. He listens to a live set filmed at a nightclub in Ayr sometime in the early 90s on repeat. Think hi viz vests, white gloves and glowsticks!

As an aside, I have singing lessons from the lead singer of QFX!

StooriMidori · 07/03/2021 12:40

@DrMaryMalone Brilliant! He will be talking about The Pavilion, or 'The Piv' as it was known back in the day! It's a soft play now which I think is quite apt - full of folk off their nut on sugar running around in various states of undress having the time of their lives 😂

SellFridges · 07/03/2021 12:48

All the best music was made in the 90’s. Fact.

I can’t choose, but today I would go with Oasis Live Forever. I’m swayed by The Charlatans One to Another, Ash Oh Yeah, and Born Slippy though. And Wannabe. And No Good Start the Dance.

DrMaryMalone · 07/03/2021 12:59

@StooriMidori lol good comparison! It's this one:

I was 11 and DH was 13 in 1994 so we missed out on this but have older friends who were into this and the Rez scene.

dontputitinyourmouth · 07/03/2021 13:30

@ BabloHoney GrinBlush I’ve not finished reading the thread yet but you’ve saved me!!! I heard the moomin land song on the radio the other day, it sent me back to my yoof so I tried to find it to add it to Spotify but when I googled the lyrics all that came up was the tv programme about moomins, you jogged my memory when you said justified and ancient and its now on my Spotify! Thanks!!!

dontputitinyourmouth · 07/03/2021 13:30

Sorry it didn’t bold you @BabloHoney in my previous post

SexualChocolate · 07/03/2021 13:36

No mention of Skunk Anansie's Hedonism yet.....

HearMeSnore · 07/03/2021 13:47

Pure Morning by Placebo

Naked by Reef

Or the absolute defining song of my freshers week: Boom Shack A Lack by Apache Indian.

mammmamia · 07/03/2021 13:51

@SexualChocolate love that, I remember it coming up on another thread about under rated songs

pizzaobsessed · 07/03/2021 13:54

Mark Morrison - Return of the Mack

BabloHoney · 07/03/2021 13:54

@dontputitinyourmouth Smile KLF were only added to Spotify earlier this year, I’ve had them on repeat ever since after way too long not listening to them! x

Takemebackto98 · 07/03/2021 14:33

@HearMeSnore

Pure Morning by Placebo

This takes me back! Saw them live a few times. He has a very distinctive voice.

SophieGiroux · 07/03/2021 16:09

Totally agree with Hedonism by Skunk Anansie

mommybunny · 07/03/2021 21:00

Iris by the Goo Goo Dolls is brilliant. My DD13 has added it to her own playlist which is a huge compliment. It was from the film City of Angels with Meg Ryan and Nicolas Cage and there were two other fantastic songs on that soundtrack: Uninvited by Alanis Morrissette and In the Arms of the Angels by Sarah MacLachlan.

Blondiney · 07/03/2021 21:31

Spent the evening listening to Oasis, no need to hear the Blur dirges again. Wink

Masterplan, Slide Away, Talk Tonight, Supersonic were all huge favourites but they were tied to too much emotion. Probably why I've avoided them for over a decade. However, Don't Look Back in anger still hits all the spots, without conjuring up images of exes past. Who cares that the opening bars are pure Imagine, imagine a world where you're 20 years old and Sally can wait.

Pass me a fooking time machine will you.

Dunairbeanat · 07/03/2021 21:46

Two of the most perfect albums ever made are :
The Score by The Fugees
Jollification by The Lightning Seeds
No fillers and love every song Smile

Plus anything by Chicane

Mylifenotscrutiny · 07/03/2021 21:50

Big mountain and Hanson. Still love then

Mylifenotscrutiny · 07/03/2021 21:50

them

Amaura · 07/03/2021 22:28

Has anyone made a Mumsnet 90 playlist on Spotify we can all use yet?

Anthilda · 07/03/2021 22:44

I cant look at the full thread tonight. Hearing 90s songs is bitter sweet and I think I might cry at the thought of how long ago it seems and that most of the friends I had in the 90s are no longer in my life Sad

My first thoughts were
Wannabe by spice girls
Gangsters paradise
Seal, kissed by a rose
Mmm bop by Hanson

Not my favourites but deffo conjure up memories

Anthilda · 07/03/2021 22:48

Sash and Robert miles too. Sad
