I’m just finishing Hear My Song in Amazon Prime, starring a very young Adrian Dunbar, Tara Fitzgerald and James Nesbit among others.

If you can get through the rousing final five minutes without your toes tapping and your hands clapping you are better than me!

It’s nonsensical, whimsical nostalgia and twee Irish, but marvellous.

@LookAtWhatYouCouldHaveWon
The one about the priest is Lamb, starring Liam Neeson

Drop Dead Fred, in which the gorgeous Rik Mayall plays a young girl's troublemaking imaginary friend who comes back when as an adult she breaks up with her husband and moves back in with her overbearing mother. Ridiculously funny, very silly and moving too.

Crash - absolutely incredible with an amazing soundtrack to boot!

@piefacedClique Crash was huge when it came out, didn't it win best picture at the Oscars? I'm
not sure you can call an Oscar winner little known!

colouringindoors · 05/03/2021 21:19

An Enchanted April, female friendships and a little romance in exquisite Italian Spring sunshine. Totally heartwarming 💕

piefacedClique · 05/03/2021 21:20

Oh ok! We were talking about it at lunch today. No one had heard about it or maybe just forgotten! I loved it anyway!

feistyoneyouare · 05/03/2021 21:20

Purely Belter. Sort of a bittersweet comedy (think Brassed Off/Full Monty type vibe but darker/grittier) set in Newcastle, came out in 2000 I think, I love it but no one ever seems to have heard of it.

Also love This Year's Love which no one ever seems to have heard of.

user88899 · 05/03/2021 21:22

@piefacedClique I agree it's not talked about much now so if it passed people by back then I can see why they wouldn't know it now, I remember it being a big deal at the time.

Watching Dear Frankie now!!
I can’t believe it was made in 2004! I would have guessed 1990s. I’m getting so old!
Young Gerard Butler is VERY nice looking! 😅

Mysterian · 05/03/2021 21:28

Starcrash.

It really is so terrible it's funny. A cheap Italian made Star Wars rip off where the best (only) actor is David Hasselhoff. Massive plot holes everywhere. Serious bits that are funny. Ridiculous effects. A heroine called Stella Star.

Available on Youtube.

BirdyBee · 05/03/2021 21:30

What about Bob? and what dreams may come. I love both of these films.

Helocariad · 05/03/2021 21:32

I remember watching Pleasantville as a student. Really enjoyed it,

Another vote for Toni Colette, she's my favourite actress I think.

The Lunchbox is another one I like. Indian film, set in Calcutta.

rosegoldwatcher · 05/03/2021 21:34

I love a subtitled film.

Le Roi Danse (the King is Dancing) - A young Louis XIV, his love of performing dance and his relationship with his court composer Jean-Baptiste Lully (who was not a nice guy!) The music is sublime (if you like baroque.)

Probably more well known is Tulip Fever, which tells the story of an illicit affair between an unhappy new bride and a painter. Set in 17th Century Amsterdam when new and rare tulip bulbs could be very valuable.

Bagdad Café

An all-time favourite from 1987.

You might not know the film but you may recognise the theme song ...

piefacedClique · 05/03/2021 21:35

Duets - gwyneth Paltrow! A kind of karaoke road trip. Lovely film and a good soundtrack x

dotdashdashdash · 05/03/2021 21:35

Velvet goldmine. It's a cult classic but I don't know anyone who has seen it

thefourgp · 05/03/2021 21:35

Another vote here for Dancing Thru The Dark

Plus;
Restless Natives - Scottish 80s comedy with music by Big Country
This Years Love - lots of famous brits in 90s comedy/drama with music by David Gray

VienneseWhirligig · 05/03/2021 21:37

Wild Rose - about a single mum from Scotland who comes out of prison and wants to be a country singer. Sounds like an odd premise but I loved it.

Bernard and the Genie - Rowan Atkinson, Lenny Henry and Alan Cumming. Very funny, had it on VHS as a teen.

colouringindoors · 05/03/2021 21:38

Oh yes Wild Rose is totally fab!

colouringindoors · 05/03/2021 21:39

I watched "Unsane" this week with Clare Fox, directed by Soderberg. Really gripping thriller about a woman who is involuntarily admitted into a psych hosp.... highly recommend it

TaraR2020 · 05/03/2021 21:40

@Blue2021

Blithe spirit the old version from 1940s. My all time favourite film. It’s in technicolour. Reminds me of my nana xx
Oh me too, I was going to put this one, love it!

Also, This Beautiful Fantastic - great cast and lovely story
