I’m just finishing Hear My Song in Amazon Prime, starring a very young Adrian Dunbar, Tara Fitzgerald and James Nesbit among others.

If you can get through the rousing final five minutes without your toes tapping and your hands clapping you are better than me!

It’s nonsensical, whimsical nostalgia and twee Irish, but marvellous.

Pili - a Tanzanian woman's battle with HIV and her desire to open a market stall - all amateur actors and in Swahili, but subtitled. Very moving and thought provoking.

The Emperor Of The North - hobos riding freight trains in depression era America

IveMadeAHugeMistake · 05/03/2021 10:21

Brotherhood of the Wolf - silly but massively fun French action/history/horror mashup. Well known in France, where I was living when it came out, but not so much here.

Farewell My Concubine - again this was well known at the time and had lots of acclaim, but you never really hear of it now. I was obsessed with it as a teenager and watched it loads of times. Beautiful and tragic Chinese film.

Blood Simple - early Coen brothers film - low budget noir, really effective - one sequence still gives me chills to think of.

Ridicule and Wild Target - two more French films (both featuring the late Jean Rochefort) that are funny, clever and sweet.

The Grifters - another brilliant modern noir, with John Cusack.

It is, though I haven't seen the original

Ginger Snaps - Aussie werewolf film with female leads

The Straight Story - an elderly man drives across America in his tractor to his dying brother

In The Deep Midwinter - a cobbled together group of rep theatre actors perform Hamlet in a village church at Xmas to try & save it. Clash of egos, personalities etc.

Superstardjs · 05/03/2021 10:27

Dancing thru' the dark.

EssexLioness · 05/03/2021 10:29

Cry Baby. Quirky film featuring a very young Johnny Depp, before he hit the big time.

EssexLioness · 05/03/2021 10:30

Also, a single man. You’ll need your tissues for that one

CandidaAlbicans2 · 05/03/2021 10:32

The Assassin with Bridget Fonda and Gabriel Byrne. I love that film

Oh yes, I love that film too! @Iveputmyselfonthenaughtystep 😎

0blio · 05/03/2021 10:33

Tarsem's The Fall. Beautiful story and incredible scenery.

Bluntasduck · 05/03/2021 10:34

Winters Bone, starring Jennifer Lawrence. If Ken Loach was American this is the film he'd make

MrsJackRackham · 05/03/2021 10:35

@CandidaAlbicans2 I love Plunkett & Macleane. Jonny Lee Miller in period costume, what's not to like? The music is fab as well.
Knives Out, murder mystery with Daniel Craig and Jamie Lee Curtis. Clever, beautifully filmed and a couple of laugh of loud moments.

Docketpuo · 05/03/2021 10:36

Something like "up sh*t creek without a paddle". I was young and post night shifts, but it struck me as hilarious at the time. Not sure I would think so watching now!

BrightonR · 05/03/2021 10:37

Blue Valentine - Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams. It is really sad and bleak at times but has moments of joy.

Rachel Getting Married - I haven't watched it in years mind.

Cry Baby. Quirky film featuring a very young Johnny Depp, before he hit the big time.
Oh yes, love this one! A firm favorite.

The war of the Buttons - really a kids film but I'll sit and watch it.

TimeIhadaNameChange · 05/03/2021 10:43

@onyourway

The Tall Guy. Richard Curtis' first film with Emma Thompson, Rowan Atkinson and Jeff Goldblum. I can't find it anywhere and I'd love to watch it again.

Think Richard Curtis has buried it Smile

It's available on Amazon. I've just bought a copy.
Limegreentangerine · 05/03/2021 10:57

Second hand lions! Belter of a film! Yet no one seems to have heard of it....

MinnieJackson · 05/03/2021 11:02

I really liked please stand by, with Dakota fanning and Toni Collette

Helocariad · 05/03/2021 11:04

Another vote for:

Babette's Feast - watched it loads of times
Farewell my Concubine - don't want to watch it again for a while because it's so tragic but brilliant film

Also:
The Taste of Others (Le gout des autres)
Look at me (Comme une image)- one of the best portrayals of a narcissistic man ever

Both with and by Agnes Jaoui. Very French in the best possible way!

Sweetpea84 · 05/03/2021 11:05

To Sir with Love I adore this film

missbridgerton · 05/03/2021 11:10

A Royal Affair with Mads Mikkelsen. Such a beautiful film (on Netflix).

Flashbacks of a Fool with Daniel Craig. Low budget but very underrated film. Loved it - it's a bit shit at the beginning when he's in LA but gets much better.

glasshouse · 05/03/2021 11:15

Second for Edie with Shelia Hancock, brilliant uplifting film, on iPlayer at the moment.

dotdashdashdash · 05/03/2021 11:20

How to an American Quilt with Winona Ryder.

Slums of Beverly Hills - it's shit but I've watched it probably a dozen times!

PuddleglumtheMarshWiggle · 05/03/2021 11:32

Connie and Carla. Starring Nia Vardolos and Toni Colette. Two girls who sing songs from the musicals and have a really bad act. Then they witness a crime and have to hide. They end up performing in a gay bar and the audience love them. So they're women dressed as men dresses as women. Great tunes, great costumes and a special appearance by Debbie Reynolds.
@IveMadeAHugeMistake - I also loved Farewell my Concubine

Notavegan · 05/03/2021 11:35

Broken Circle Breakdown. Sob

chipsandgin · 05/03/2021 11:41

The Fisher King with Robin Williams and Jeff Bridges. Probably not that obscure as Robin Williams was nominated for an Oscar for it, but as it’s 30 years old maybe not so well known now!? Just a brilliant film that stays with you.
