I’m just finishing Hear My Song in Amazon Prime, starring a very young Adrian Dunbar, Tara Fitzgerald and James Nesbit among others.

If you can get through the rousing final five minutes without your toes tapping and your hands clapping you are better than me!

It’s nonsensical, whimsical nostalgia and twee Irish, but marvellous.

Oh I loved Paperhouse too

alltoomuchrightnow · 05/03/2021 21:43

Dream A Little Dream with the two Coreys would look terribly dated now but the soundtrack is fantastic and timeless

@AmazingCoffee

Has anyone seen The Music of Chance with Mandy Patinkin? Based on a Paul Auster novel (a good early Paul Auster novel before Paul Auster discovered he is Paul Auster and became pretentious).
We read this in in a book club and I thought it was brilliant, so I suggested the film for a film club (love a club, me), and I thought the film was terrible. I loved the story, love Mandy Patinkin, but just couldn't get on with the film.

Fontella George Michael’s live performance of the theme song from
Bagdad Cafe is stunning. You can find it on YT.

My little known films: Poetry (Korean film) and Land of Mine (Danish film).
Stunning, emotional films, both of them. Lots of tissues required.

Another Very Annie Mary fan here!

scubadub · 05/03/2021 21:44

Now and then- loved it as a kid and I'm dying to watch it but it's not on Netflix or Amazon etc 😫

inmyslippers · 05/03/2021 21:44

Happiness really dark comedy

alltoomuchrightnow · 05/03/2021 21:45

Stealing Home with Jodie Foster
Couldn't count how many times watched it when younger
Very shmaltzy and sentimental but a beautiful film

PuppyMonkey · 05/03/2021 21:45

If you mean the original Father of the Bride with Spencer Tracy and Elizabeth Taylor, I’m in.

Primer

BenoneBeauty · 05/03/2021 21:49

Not as high brow as some of these but Xanadu would be my choice! I don't know a single other person who's seen this Olivia Newton John movie in roller skates but watched it when I was young and thought it was amazing! I sometimes think I dreamt it though as literally I don't know anyone else who's ever seen it!

BenoneBeauty · 05/03/2021 21:51

I've also never been able to find it since and have searched a lot over the years!

user88899 · 05/03/2021 21:52

@scubadub omg I would love to watch that again!!

nauticant · 05/03/2021 21:52

Welcome to the Dollhouse. Off-beat humour and very dark:

BrowncoatWaffles · 05/03/2021 21:54

Sixty Six. So random and yet so lovely. Helena Bonham Carter, Peter Serafinowicz, Catherine Tate and Eddie Marsan.

nauticant · 05/03/2021 21:55

Oooh inmyslippers Happiness was the film Todd Solondz made after Welcome to the Dollhouse. It makes the darkness of WttD look like a cheery walk through a lovely park on a sunny day.

dotdashdashdash · 05/03/2021 22:11

Thought of another 2:

  • heavenly creatures, Australian (I think) based on a true story of two friends who plot to kill one of their mothers. Stars a young Kate Winslet.
  • Nell, starring Jody Foster and Liam Neeson. A young woman has lived completely isolated in America until her mother dies.
VienneseWhirligig · 05/03/2021 22:19

Also: Streets of Fire. Cracking soundtrack.

allOrpheline
Couldn't agree more - the story line doesn't sell it, but it is a wonderful film.

Beefstew · 05/03/2021 22:44

The Mirror has two faces starring Barbra Streisand and Jeff Bridges, great chemistry between them and a gentle romance. Also stars Lauren Bacall and Pierce Brosnan

I saw it too. And I had the Album!
MothershipG · 05/03/2021 22:50

Byzantium one of the best vampire films with a disturbingly evil Jonny Lee Miller.

The Big Blue Luc Besson's beautiful film about fee diving, requires tissues.

@poorbuthappy I also love Grosse Point Blank, fab soundtrack.

Spudina · 05/03/2021 23:02

Not unheard of but my favourite films are The Devine Secrets of the YaYa Sisterhood and So I married an Axe Murderer. It’s a Mike Myers which didn’t do very well but has a cult following. If someone I don’t know quotes a line from it, I know I will like them. My now DH and I both had the VHS and bonded over our love of it.

White Squall

MargotMoon · 05/03/2021 23:11

I'm very much enjoying all the Tall Guy love on here. The sex scene is hugely entertaining

@AmazingCoffee "Tell her she's dreaming"

@LoungeLizardLhama Omg, Shag! I love that film. Have never met anyone else who has seen it apart from my mum, we watched it together over and over

Naked was amazing. Not sure I could watch it again though

I'd forgotten all about Peter's Friends...bet it has aged really badly.

@Walkthroughthefire Flight of the Dragon was ACE!

There's quite a few cult classics mentioned on this thread. I'll add:

Gregory's Girl

Local Hero

And a black and white film about a young Spurs fan. It's 1961 and she's trying to get a ticket for the FA cup final (the year they became the first ever team to win the league and cup double). I came across it on telly when I was about the same age as the girl and loved it. Mentioned it to my dad recently and he told me what it was called but I've forgotten...
