I’m just finishing Hear My Song in Amazon Prime, starring a very young Adrian Dunbar, Tara Fitzgerald and James Nesbit among others.

If you can get through the rousing final five minutes without your toes tapping and your hands clapping you are better than me!

It’s nonsensical, whimsical nostalgia and twee Irish, but marvellous.

Another IMDB browser here.

Gerard Depardieu and Roman Polanski (in their Hollywood exclusion phases) in Giuseppe Tornatore’s film “A Pure Formality”. The plot twist at the end makes you want to go back and watch it all again.

I also love Tornatore’s “The Legend of the Pianist on the Ocean” with Tim Roth. But that’s fairly well known.

'To Wong Foo Thanks for Everything, Julie Newmar' - about three drag queens on a road trip. Seems to have gone under the radar a bit but Wesley Snipes is so brilliant in it. Stockard Channing and Patrick Swayzes character have such a touching relationship too. It's a great film with just the right balance of serious stuff, humour and a happy ending. So sad that Patrick died so young - I think he had so much talent and so much more he could have done as an actor.

Grosse Point Blank.
I love this film.

BigFatLiar · 05/03/2021 19:38

@user88899

My favourite film is Pleasantville but lots of people don't seem to know it when I mention it.
Loved Pleasantville, just a nice film.

Also...
Mr Holland's Opus (about a schoolteacher who wanted to be a rock composer)
My Life - Really good film about a man with cancer
The Doctor - (William Hurt as a doctor who becomes ill and realises what people go through)

Therealjudgejudy · 05/03/2021 19:40

Yes to Martha meet Frank, Daniel and Lawrence..
Also Keeping mum.

Strictly Ballroomand Muriels Wedding also awesome

Dunairbeanat · 05/03/2021 19:42

I love lots of the films mentioned so far, Crossing Delancey (great theme tune), Dazed and Confused, Brassed Off, Peter's Friends.
Would like to add-
Girls Night - Brenda Blethyn and Julie Walters
Cry Freedom - Kevin Kline and Denzel Washington. Brilliantly acted. The story of the life and death of Steve Biko
Grand Canyon - an ensemble cast set in LA

@DGRossetti

Mine is another Richard Linklater film - ‘before sunset’. I’m not usually one for romance films but this is the second in a trilogy and the acting is superb. Story unfolds in real time and nothing much happens plot-wise but it’s extremely moving ss two characters talk about their lives and hopes and dreams.

BasinHaircut · 05/03/2021 19:45

Thanks so much for this thread. I’ve now got a list of films to watch without endless scrolling and deciding!

Think I’ll start with Edie tonight.

Loopyloututu2 · 05/03/2021 19:47

Peters friends with Emma Thompson, Kenneth Branagh, Stephen fry, Hugh Laurie et al - a lovely funny British film

I love cry baby too but I wouldn’t say it’s “unknown” - it’s a cult classic!

Loopyloututu2 · 05/03/2021 19:50

Also love grosse point Blank (though Minnie driver is sooooo annoying in it) and high fidelity both with John cusack

To Wong Foo Thanks for Everything, Julie Newmar - too Wong foo is the American film version of Priscilla queen of the desert - its good I agree.

Norugratsatall · 05/03/2021 19:55

Silent Running - 1972 sci-fi film. Wonderful story, very moving with great soundtrack too.

CaffineismyBFF · 05/03/2021 20:03

@CandidaAlbicans2

. It's a quirky action with some comedy and a great soundtrack.

"Storyline
Will Plunkett (Robert Carlyle) and Captain James Macleane (Jonny Lee Miller), two men from different ends of the social spectrum in eighteenth century England, enter a gentlemen's agreement: They decide to rid the aristocrats of their belongings. With Plunkett's criminal know-how and Macleane's social connections, they team up to be soon known as "The Gentlemen Highwaymen". But when one day these gentlemen hold up Lord Chief Justice Gibson's (Sir Michael Gambon's) coach, Macleane instantly falls in love with his beautiful and cunning niece, Lady Rebecca Gibson (Liv Tyler). Unfortunately, Thief Taker General Chance (Ken Stott), who also is quite fond of Rebecca, is getting closer and closer to getting both: The Gentlemen Highwaymen and Rebecca, who, needless to say, don't want to get any closer to him. But Plunkett still has a thing to sort out with Chance, and his impulsiveness gets all of them in a little trouble."

I remember this!

@Towerofjoyless

Moonlight1705 I loved that film as a teenager, really fancied Richard Chamberlain in it!

Mine is Only You, a mid 90s film with Robert Downey Jr and Marisa Tomei. Pure cheese but love it

Yesss only you! Wasn't Robert Downey Jnr beautiful in that movie too, so young and fresh (and drug free!)
CaffineismyBFF · 05/03/2021 20:09

Mine is Father of the Bride. I absolutely love that movie, but none of my friends have seen it or even heard of it. Steve Martin is an absolute legend.

I also really enjoyed North when I was younger. Bruce Willis and Elijah Wood kids film.

Before Sunrise was the first- my favourite- then Before Sunset and Before Midnight. I've not managed to watch those, I went back recently to watch Before Sunrise for the first time in years and couldn't finish it, nor go onto the others.

Walkthroughthefire · 05/03/2021 20:19

Crybaby and are a couple of my fave films!
I love Wes Anderson but no one I know has seen The Life Aquatic.
Sideways is hilarious.
Dancer in the dark is beautiful but devastating.
Inside I'm dancing is funny and heartbreaking. James McAvoy is brilliant in it but again, no-one seems to have heard of it.
I saw Shag when I was about 13 and loved it but I've never managed to track it down again.
My favourite film as a child was Flight of the dragon.

UKhun · 05/03/2021 20:21

@Bluesheep8

Most people I mention it to have never heard of it - The Watcher In The Woods with Bette Davis
@Bluesheep8 I have! It's one of the rare Disney horror films for kids. It scared the shit out of me when I was about 8! I just remember all the leaves blowing around the woods. So creepy!
Janetatone · 05/03/2021 20:26

Time of the Gypsies
K-pac
Photographing Faries
Silent Running

Love all these.

Walkthroughthefire · 05/03/2021 20:28

*and Brick. Completely fell in love with Joseph Gordon-Levitt after it!

snowman212 · 05/03/2021 20:32

I like (or used to, it's been a while since I've watched one) french films, especially comedies.
Some suggestions from top of my head are Populaire and little Nicholas

Loopyloututu2 · 05/03/2021 20:49

Have you seen “the man with two brains”? Another one of my faves - it’s SO ridiculous and funny.

DGRossetti · 05/03/2021 21:02

LA Story - Steve Martin, wonderfully oddball romcom.

BlackBrowedAlbatross · 05/03/2021 21:03

Any of Christopher Guest's ensemble comedies. I think For Your Consideration is my favourite at the moment.

HandlebarLadyTash · 05/03/2021 21:05

The World According to Garp (Robin Williams)
