I’m just finishing Hear My Song in Amazon Prime, starring a very young Adrian Dunbar, Tara Fitzgerald and James Nesbit among others.

If you can get through the rousing final five minutes without your toes tapping and your hands clapping you are better than me!

It’s nonsensical, whimsical nostalgia and twee Irish, but marvellous.

@DuesToTheDirt

Les Visiteurs (French comedy). I don't generally like comedies, but this had me LOL.
I was scrolling through to see if anyone had mentioned Les Visiteurs, it's my "go to" feelgood film. They made a second one and also a later one set in the French Revolution but the DVD didn't have English subtitles so a lot of it was lost on me. They also made an English version of the original set in New York called Just Visiting.

I also love The Crimson Pirate an old swashbuckler with Burt Lancaster.

@DGRossetti

More recently Death of Stalin appears to be doing a good job of slowly sinking ..
I love this film! Very black comedy and Jason Isaacs is fab in it (as are the rest of the cast)

Also, Tell No One, a French film, with Kristin Scott Thomas.

Three Days of the Condor, with Robert Redford and Faye Dunaway.

the80sweregreat · 05/03/2021 18:16

'Hush a bye baby 'is the sinead o Connor film
Had to search a bit online to find it!
I didn't know she acted at all.

@TressiliansStone I've not seen A Month in the Country but I adore JL Carr's books. First got into them about 30+ years ago when The Harpole Report was the book of the week on radio 4.

Does everyone here know about IMDb.com?

Internet movie database, has been around for yonks. Great for finding films where you remember an actor, you can just Google then click on the All Filmography link and all their credits come up from most recent.

I just assumed everyone knew about it!

I don't know about everybody but I'd assume that anyone who likes the obscure films mentioned would be a movie buff and would know.

I look actors up several times a week, often multiple times during one programme, I always need to know what other stuff actors have been in Grin

ShagMeRiggins · 05/03/2021 18:25

LookAtWhatYouCouldHaveWon

Google tells me it’s Lamb with Liam Neeson (film priest boy epileptic drown).

user88899 · 05/03/2021 18:28

My favourite film is Pleasantville but lots of people don't seem to know it when I mention it.

Oh absolutely. My phone is basically open to that website upon any viewing of film or television. Often I wait until the end to look it all up, but it can be great fun to—for example—realise Emilia Fox was Mr Darcy’s sister in Pride and Prejudice.

Erm...for those of us who like that sort of thing.

AnswerTheQuestionDamnYourEyes · 05/03/2021 18:29

Moonstruck. Nic Cage & Cher- a natural pairing??!! Some absolute classic lines.

Grand Seduction. Taylor Kitsch being all gorgeous.

About Time. Bill Nighy stealing the film completely just by being himself!

user88899 · 05/03/2021 18:30

Does everyone here know about IMDb.com?

The first 15 mins of whatever I am watching involves a thorough cast search answering those familiar niggles of what they've been in on IMDB and then Wikipedia to get their background and relationship history 😂

ShagMeRiggins · 05/03/2021 18:30

Pleasantville—Tobey & Reese and so many more. Did the whole Wizard of Oz thing with B&w to colour. Really interesting film. And you’re right—not many know of it.

MrsBerthaRochester · 05/03/2021 18:31

Just watched Destination wedding thanks to this thread and loved it! Another one I love(watched it as a young teen) is Chronicle of a death foretold,with a very young,beautiful Rupert Everett.

Angliski · 05/03/2021 18:33

Pecker. John waters classic with Eddie furlong and Christina Ricci. Fun and quirky.

the80sweregreat · 05/03/2021 18:34

I love IMDb and reading the ' goofs' and looking out for them! It's a brilliant website, lots of information on there.

@Redannie118

Wish you were here? A coming of age story set in a English sea side town in the Early 1950s, and loosley based on the memoirs of the infamous madam Cynthia Paine. Hilariously funny and incredibly sad its without doubt one of the best movies i have ever seen . Its free to watch on Amazon Prime. If you like it also watch Personal services starring the incredible Julie Walters, as its a kind of follow on to the story and shows how Paine became a madam and set up her brothels.
I was searching through for someone to mention this. As a teen I found it hilarious but now I find it sad. Apart from the swearing and ‘have I got nice tits, or have o got nice tits’; they’re still funny 😁
Gingernaut · 05/03/2021 18:52

The Dish - Set in Australia and telling the story about how a satellite dish in a sheep paddock helped to keep the world connected to the first rocket to the moon.

Starts with a blood curdling version of House of the Rising Sun.

purrswhileheeats · 05/03/2021 18:59

eXistenZ with Jude Law and Jennifer Jason Leigh - I have this on DVD and dig it out when I need a trip 😜
