I’m just finishing Hear My Song in Amazon Prime, starring a very young Adrian Dunbar, Tara Fitzgerald and James Nesbit among others.

If you can get through the rousing final five minutes without your toes tapping and your hands clapping you are better than me!

It’s nonsensical, whimsical nostalgia and twee Irish, but marvellous.

My youngest son is Tate, after this film.

Martha meet Frank Daniel and Lawrence. Love it but no-one's ever seen it

Bloodybridget · 05/03/2021 17:27

Louis Malle's film Au Revoir les Enfants - obviously it's very well known, but as it's a classic, worth mentioning!

Old one people might have heard of ‘The Champ’
Excellent film that always makes me cry
Showgirls - so bad and cheesy that it is brilliant !
Also love love love Assassin - watched it about once a week at Uni many moons ago.

@Rockhopper81

I really enjoyed 'Knives Out', but found Daniel Craig's accent hilariously bad!!
I watched that recently, mentioned it in quite a large WhatsApp group chat and it turned out I was the only one who hadn't seen it when it first came out I don't think it makes the cut for films no one else has seen Grin

It was so bad I was convinced all the way through it was going to be part of the plot twist.

You'll enjoy this sketch about his accent coach:

A Month in the Country, an obscure and very good Colin Firth.

TressiliansStone · 05/03/2021 17:37

ShakeaHettyFeather, I love Eight Women!

AlanSugaryTea · 05/03/2021 17:39

Frankie and Johnny. I love it.

Kendodd · 05/03/2021 17:40

I really liked Safety Not Guaranteed
And for an older film, Buffalo 66

minniemoocher · 05/03/2021 17:41

@noego

Saw Edie last week, (it's on iPlayer) brilliant film. Also love The Tall Guy whoever mentioned it.

If anyone hasn't watched it can recommend The Dig on Netflix, another gentle British film (can't be doing with action films currently).

Pretty sure all of my favourites are mainstream as they come - made dp sit through An Officer and a Gentleman last week.

minniemoocher · 05/03/2021 17:43

@Blacktothepink

Oh yes love a private function - went to see Betty Blue Eyes (musical based on it) when it was on in London which was even better!

Another current crop that's worth a watch is the guernsey literary and potato peel pie society

The Lacemaker with Isabelle Huppert.

ShagMeRiggins · 05/03/2021 17:45

Between Two Ferns: The Movie

Zac Galifianakis as the (very bad) host of a cable access interview show who wants to be a National late night talk show host.

Helps to like famous Hollywood stars and comedians, amazing number of cameos, so rude and shocking, and funny, but with some heart.

On Amazon or Netflix I think. Massive recommendation.

Cardboardeaux · 05/03/2021 17:48

Paris Je T'Aime

DGRossetti · 05/03/2021 17:50

Short Cuts - series of linked pieces with quite a few big names.

dementedma · 05/03/2021 17:51

Saving Grace..laugh out loud funny

Children of a Lesser God...so moving!

hollyandkit · 05/03/2021 17:54

Badlands. Martin Sheen and Sissy Spacek in the most beautifully shot and perfectly acted film ever. Martin Sheen is a fabulous bin man/trigger happy psychopath.

skinneryu · 05/03/2021 17:56

The Cobbler 2014

LookAtWhatYouCouldHaveWon · 05/03/2021 17:59

I can't remember the name of it but essentially its abouþ a RC priest who kidnaps a young lad who has very severe epilepsy. When it looks like he might be about to be arrested he carries him into the sea and the boy drowns.

On a similar uplifting note, theres also a film with a very young Sinead O'Connor in. Iirc, she gets pregnant and is shipped off to le Magdalen Laundries.

If anyone could identify either of them i'd be appreciative.

Wetcappuccino · 05/03/2021 17:59

Brick - a high school, noir-ish, detective film by Rian Johnson. With Joseph Gordon Levitt.

Laska2Meryls · 05/03/2021 18:00

Dream On by Amber films . Its funny and bleak magical and uplifting all at once. Its set around the lives of a women's darts team and set in North Shields ..1990s and one of those films that I have never forgotten

DGRossetti · 05/03/2021 18:04

Priest - with a very young Robert Carlyle

MoreMorelos · 05/03/2021 18:08

@EssexLioness

Cry Baby. Quirky film featuring a very young Johnny Depp, before he hit the big time.
Love that film so much!
Bloodybridget · 05/03/2021 18:13

@Lookatwhatyoucouldhavewon I think the film about the priest is Lamb, adapted by Bernard MacLaverty from his novel.
