I’m just finishing Hear My Song in Amazon Prime, starring a very young Adrian Dunbar, Tara Fitzgerald and James Nesbit among others.

If you can get through the rousing final five minutes without your toes tapping and your hands clapping you are better than me!

It’s nonsensical, whimsical nostalgia and twee Irish, but marvellous.

@YesItsAPeacock

Home Alone - very dark thriller in which a wealthy boy with psychopathic tendencies tortures two underprivileged men.

Avengers Endgame - a ragtag group of traumatised misfits discovers time travel. They then inexplicably rush to reverse a prior catastrophic event (despite literally having as much time as they could ever want), in the most unnecessarily complicated way. For hours.

Jurassic Park - screwball comedy set on an island. Rare performance by Jeff Goldblum as an offbeat eccentric who adds unconventional pauses to his sentences.

😂😂😂

Heartened so few are scared by foreign tongues Grin in which case:

Cinema Paradiso and Il Postino (warning: on no account mix this up with the dire Kevin Costner offering ...)

The Nasty Girl is a surprisingly frank German film

Nil by mouth. Gary oldman and Kathy Burke. Stark but brilliant.

@Redannie118

Dear Frankie. A young single mum in Scotland writes her son beautiful letters full of adventure and love that are supposedly from his absent father, who works on what she thinks is a fictional ship. When the ship docks nearby she has to find a replacement daddy for the weekend in the form of a very young( and beautiful) Gerard Butler. Beautiful, funny and moving with a great soundtrack and some twists you wont see coming.

Just your summary had brought tears to my eyes. 😢

the80sweregreat · 05/03/2021 15:46

I did really enjoy ' parasite'
I didn't think I would.

Redannie118 · 05/03/2021 15:49

@NeedToKnow101. Thanks , its an amazing film. The fact that its set in Scotland doesnt hurt either !

NeedToKnow101 · 05/03/2021 15:53

Parasite was brilliant!

The French film Delicatessen is quirky and wonderful.

Love the Australian comedy, Strictly Ballroom, about back-stabbing and pettiness in the ballroom dancing scene.

There was a dark comedy about two Welsh drug-dealers who lived in a caravan with a tall lanky actor in, omg I can't remember his name and google won't tell. Anyway, I enjoyed it.

Oh and in that vein, Submarine is good.

DGRossetti · 05/03/2021 15:53

Capricorn One - vaguely sci-fi thriller with O.J. Simpson. It also starts Sam Waterstone which then reminds me of:

Crimes and Misdemeanours which also has Alan Alda ("If it's funny, it doesn't break ..."). Funny, as you'd expect, but with a surprisingly poignant depth to it, considering the darker aspects.

Jellybean81 · 05/03/2021 16:07

To Wong Foo thanks for everything Julie Newmar - Patrick Swayze and Wesley Snipes in drag. A really fun feel good film

ElaineMarieBenes · 05/03/2021 16:13

@NeedToKnow101 - ‘Twin Town’? Rhys Ifans is in it if you mean him?

Thewithesarehere · 05/03/2021 16:14

Placemarking to check later

halfbakedkate · 05/03/2021 16:18

I remember skipping back from the video shop with a copy of Shag and my mum not letting me watch it. Didn't understand why at the time, can now.

I loved The Assassin - going to see if I can source a copy to watch. Was a great film.

Adventures in Babysitting was a firm favourite when I was young.

FictionalCharacter · 05/03/2021 16:21

Paperhouse, an outstanding 80s psychological thriller. Really unusual.

DGRossetti · 05/03/2021 16:22

We're getting down to impossible to source now ...

Ladri de Saponette - very clever Italian film with elements of the meta. Made by Maurizio Nichetti who also made

Volere, Volare

Timeforatincture · 05/03/2021 16:33

Of the films mentioned so far, the ones I love are the OPs opening bid Hear My Song; A Private Function: His Girl Friday; Knives Out; Death of Stalin: Pride. Lost count of the number of times I've seen Pride.

One of my faves is Bagdad Cafe. A German tourist gets stranded at a truckstop in the middle of a hot sandy nowhere in the US. So heartwarming to see how the relationships between the oddballs at the cafe develop.

And one I adore from the 80s is so damn 80s and so damn French. Diva.

DGRossetti · 05/03/2021 16:35

American Friends - Michael Palin in a story based around his own ancestor

lancs54 · 05/03/2021 16:40

A Walk on the Moon - gorgeous film set in in 1969 with Diane Lane, Viggo Mortensen and Liev Schreiber.

Brill soundtrack, too.

NeedToKnow101 · 05/03/2021 16:48
@NeedToKnow101 - ‘Twin Town’? Rhys Ifans is in it if you mean him?
Yes that's the one.

PurpleBag · 05/03/2021 16:48

The Life of David Gale
The Foreigner

DGRossetti · 05/03/2021 16:48

The Coen Brothers tend to slip under the radar a bit.

The Men Who Stare At Goats or Burn After Reading are a good introduction to their take on life. (When you realise George Clooney can act).

On that note Born on the 4th July shows Tom Cruise can too.

samsmum2 · 05/03/2021 16:52

Dancing through the dark.

ShakeaHettyFeather · 05/03/2021 16:53

Eight Women - imagine an Agatha Christie drama with 8 women trapped in a house where a man has been murdered. Only French. And it's a musical. Recommend especially if you liked Knives Out.

Los Vampiros de Habana - Animated film but not for kids. Cuban mafia-style gangs of vampires are fighting as you do, when one invents suncream enabling vampires to go out in daylight, then there's a protection racket, attempts to steal the formula, etc. Gloriously bonkers with strong Cuban accents.

BailOutChapsGingersGornSquiffy · 05/03/2021 17:04

@MonkeyPuddle

Safety Not Guaranteed
Love it! Huge Mark Duplass fan, two of his other movies I’d suggest -

Blue Jay & Paddleton

Also on my recommended list -

Toni Erdmann (German)

Submarine

Sing Street

Paterson

Untouchable (already mentioned French film which is way better than the American remake entitled The Upside)

Rockhopper81 · 05/03/2021 17:05

I really enjoyed 'Knives Out', but found Daniel Craig's accent hilariously bad!!

Glassempty · 05/03/2021 17:15

Just seen someone mention Aidan Quinn and I wondered if anyone had seen The Playboys with him and Robyn Wright?
