I’m just finishing Hear My Song in Amazon Prime, starring a very young Adrian Dunbar, Tara Fitzgerald and James Nesbit among others.

If you can get through the rousing final five minutes without your toes tapping and your hands clapping you are better than me!

It’s nonsensical, whimsical nostalgia and twee Irish, but marvellous.

Mystery Men - slightly rubbish superheroes come together to fight crime. It came out just before all the Marvel films and it makes fun of it all. I discovered it working in a video shop (so it's quite old) and my whole family love it but no one else ever seems to have heard of it

CormoranStrike · 05/03/2021 09:05

I’ll have a look at both the suggestions so far.

. It's a quirky action with some comedy and a great soundtrack.

"Storyline
Will Plunkett (Robert Carlyle) and Captain James Macleane (Jonny Lee Miller), two men from different ends of the social spectrum in eighteenth century England, enter a gentlemen's agreement: They decide to rid the aristocrats of their belongings. With Plunkett's criminal know-how and Macleane's social connections, they team up to be soon known as "The Gentlemen Highwaymen". But when one day these gentlemen hold up Lord Chief Justice Gibson's (Sir Michael Gambon's) coach, Macleane instantly falls in love with his beautiful and cunning niece, Lady Rebecca Gibson (Liv Tyler). Unfortunately, Thief Taker General Chance (Ken Stott), who also is quite fond of Rebecca, is getting closer and closer to getting both: The Gentlemen Highwaymen and Rebecca, who, needless to say, don't want to get any closer to him. But Plunkett still has a thing to sort out with Chance, and his impulsiveness gets all of them in a little trouble."

The Tall Guy. Richard Curtis' first film with Emma Thompson, Rowan Atkinson and Jeff Goldblum. I can't find it anywhere and I'd love to watch it again.

Think Richard Curtis has buried it Smile

Welcome to Collinwood, eccentric and funny heist movie with William H Macy and others.
Tag line - "Idiots Make Lousy Criminals".

I’m making a list now!

The Assassin with Bridget Fonda and Gabriel Byrne. I love that film. A drug addict is given a chance at a new life working as a government assassin, but as she learns how to fit in the real world, the appeal of her new role wears thin as d she needs to find a way to escape.

I also love Destination Wedding (it was on Netflix recently) with winona ryder and keanu Reeves. It's like a two hand play, lots of witty fast paced dialogue and not much else, but it made me laugh and laugh.

Eyes of Laura Mars.

Most people I mention it to have never heard of it - The Watcher In The Woods with Bette Davis

SocraticJunkieWannabe · 05/03/2021 10:03

I wouldn't go so far as to day no-one knows them but two of my favourites which were not huge hits are The Way Way Back and Enough Said

Chimeraforce · 05/03/2021 10:06

Lion. Indian film, subtitles.
A young boy ends up asleep on a train 1000s miles from home in India. Everyone is worried for him and the story is his journey back home. Taking in child traffickers, homelessness it's a beautiful film. I won't spoil the ending but it's heartwarming. True story too ❤️ watched alone as my family hate subtitles.

Another Round/Druk. Not fully released here (I saw it as part of London Film Festival) yet but keep an eye out for when it is! Danish film with Mads Mikkelsen as a teacher who along with 3 friends tests a theory that humans are born with a 0.05% blood alcohol deficiency. Funny, sad, thought provoking...I can't wait to be able to see it again!

ItsFriyay · 05/03/2021 10:14

@Chimeraforce oh gosh, I loved Lion. I saw it in the cinema and pretty much cried the whole way through. What an amazing and moving story.

My recommendation would be Time Trap which is on Netflix. It’s about a group of students looking for their missing professor in a cave. Won’t say any more as don’t want to give the story away. Really enjoyed it.

I've not seen The Assassin, but your description sounds very much like it's an American version of the French film Nikita, directed by Luc Besson, which is an excellent and very stylish film.

A private function 😂
