I’m just finishing Hear My Song in Amazon Prime, starring a very young Adrian Dunbar, Tara Fitzgerald and James Nesbit among others.

If you can get through the rousing final five minutes without your toes tapping and your hands clapping you are better than me!

It’s nonsensical, whimsical nostalgia and twee Irish, but marvellous.

"Harvey", with James Stewart - and old black and white film that I consider to be one of the greatest comedies ever made. Closely followed by "Arsenic and Old Lace", with Cary Grant.

One none of my musical loving friends seem to have heard of is The Slipper and the Rose.

It has Richard chamberlain and Gemma craven and is a gorgeous musical romp through the Cinderella story.

I read your thread title @CormoranStrike and before I even opened the thread I instantly thought ‘Hear My Song’!! It’s been one of my very favourite films since it was first released. I absolutely love it. So glad to hear someone else singing its praises!

Oh I remember seeing Harvey when a kid and living it, I'll have to see if it's on any streaming to watch again. Love James Stewart

@SocraticJunkieWannabe

I wouldn't go so far as to day no-one knows them but two of my favourites which were not huge hits are The Way Way Back and Enough Said
I love The Way Way Back. Such a lovely film.

Haven’t heard of Enough Said, I’ll look it up!

Intersection. Beautiful film with Richard Gere and Sharon Stone.

The only one mentioned so far that I know is Lion. Wonderful film. Didn't realise it wasn't widely known. Everybody should watch it!

MyGhastIsFlabbered · 05/03/2021 11:59

@moonlight1705 I love that film so much!

Would second The Tall Guy and The Painted Veil (both mentioned up thread) and add the science fiction film Silent Running.

CormoranStrike · 05/03/2021 13:09

Marvellous is another, well, marvellous film. Inspiring, uplifting and funny.

Once. Can't believe it's not better known. Funny, touching, great music.

Lion. Indian film, subtitles. A young boy ends up asleep on a train 1000s miles from home in India. Everyone is worried for him and the story is his journey back home. Taking in child traffickers, homelessness it's a beautiful film. I won't spoil the ending but it's heartwarming. True story too ❤️ watched alone as my family hate subtitles.
That's a great film but you've written a weird summary of it. It's not an Indian film, it's Australian, and it doesn't have subtitles.

My offering is The Joy Luck Club.

AmazingCoffee · 05/03/2021 13:17

A french film that I saw as a young teen called something like 'Not everyone is lucky enough to have communist parents'.

I loved it. I periodically try and locate it but without luck so far.

The Milagro Bean Field War

Very starry cast - John Heard, Melanie Griffith, Christopher Walken and directed by Robert Redford.

Tiny town of Milagro, Mexico is about to be shafted by shady resort developers who will take all the water - drama with some comedy, some slightly supernatural whimsy and Christopher Walken as an out of town hitman who stands out like a sore thumb.

I remember the Slipper & The Rose. My mum actually took to the cinema me to see it - probably because she had a bit of a thing about Richard Chamberlain!

Mine are "The Cup" - about young Tibetan monks trying to get a tv to watch the World Cup (subtitles). It's lovely. Saw it on a flight.

The other is "The Hotel New Hampshire". Based on a John Irving book. Rob Lowe at his absolute sexiest which is saying something! Also with Jodie Foster.

SomethingWitchy · 05/03/2021 13:21

His Girl Friday.

I thought it was reasonably famous but I get blank looks when I mention it, so there were go!

Also, the original 1939 version of 'The Women' (not the god-awful remake with Meg Ryan). The message is terrible but it's witty and fast-paced and a fascinating look at the moral logic of that time.

Come to think of it, both those films have quite disappointing endings for otherwise powerhouse women, but no more than many modern films. There's quite a pathos from a modern perspective as you can see them reaching for something better in a very sexist world and nearly getting there before being pulled back...

Towerofjoyless · 05/03/2021 13:22

Moonlight1705 I loved that film as a teenager, really fancied Richard Chamberlain in it!

Mine is Only You, a mid 90s film with Robert Downey Jr and Marisa Tomei. Pure cheese but love it

AmazingCoffee · 05/03/2021 13:22

@ArtichokeAardvark

Keeping Mum - blackest of black comedies, with Rowan Atkinson, Maggie Smith and Kristen Scott-Thomas.
I am never sure why this film is not more popular. It is hysterical and features Patrick Swayze also.
