There is a paedophile living on the next road to me.

Found out today through the medium of Facebook. Pleaded guilty to downloading cat A images and received a suspended sentence/put on the sex offenders register.

He lives almost next door to a play park.

At the moment there is plenty of pitch forks at the ready from the neighbours from what I can tell. But can anyone tell me seriously how this will be policed/monitored?

I hate to say it, but this is probably true for an awful lot of us. There are a lot of sex offenders out there.

Whysolong7 · 02/03/2021 21:41

How can you be sure when the source is Facebook?!

Kittykat93 · 02/03/2021 21:42

Theres probably a paedophile in nearly every street..you just dont know about it. Most of them havent been caught. At least you know so you can be aware. Keep your kids safe and theres not much else you can do.

maddy68 · 02/03/2021 21:42

I hate to tell you but the chances are there is many more than the one you know about in your street. Having worked in that field it's staggering how many are on a register.

If he's a danger he will be closely monitored.

TheChip · 02/03/2021 21:42

I find it odd that they would be placed so closely to a children's play park.

Are you sure what you have seen and heard on Facebook is true?

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 02/03/2021 21:43

You've read a random Facebook status about a man and assumed it true?

This is actually quite dangerous. Anyone could say anything about anyone on FB. This man could he perfectly innocent or the victim of a fake smear campaign.

Wellthisisjustfuckingbrilliant · 02/03/2021 21:44

No the post included a link to a news article with the mans name and address.

OP posts:
BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 02/03/2021 21:45

The press listed his name and address in an article?

Wellthisisjustfuckingbrilliant · 02/03/2021 21:46

Yes his name, age and his road.

OP posts:
Wellthisisjustfuckingbrilliant · 02/03/2021 21:47

I should clarify that I live in a small area. It isn’t like the press wrote Joe Bloggs, Hertfordshire/Surrey/London or whatever.

It was Joe Bloggs, xxx road, xxx town.

I find it unlikely that a newspaper would publish the man's address. I think there are rules to prevent that happening, just on case of this sort of scenario.

Any chance the link is fake, OP? Is the newspaper reputable? Have you compared the web address to that of the actual newspaper? Do clicky links on the page work as they should?

Wellthisisjustfuckingbrilliant · 02/03/2021 21:48

It’s been in two separate papers. One the town where he attended court, the second the local paper to the area.

OP posts:
skeggycaggy · 02/03/2021 21:49

My local newspaper does this too, WineInTheWillows

Joe Bloggs, of Smith Street, Jonestown, was convicted of...

I read an article about a man who assaulted his very very young child, name & address were given...

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 02/03/2021 21:50

Dont get me wrong, if it were up to me, convicted paedophiles would serve life behind bars. But sharing their full name, street name, and town, is disgusting.

Wellthisisjustfuckingbrilliant · 02/03/2021 21:52

My question is what steps would be taken. I’m not talking about people charging round his house with pitchforks. Social media is currently getting very heated. I’m asking if there would be monitoring etc going on?

OP posts:
NeepNeepNeep · 02/03/2021 21:52

I can believe they would publish the street name but not the number because same thing has happened locally to me and this is reputable sources etc. not social media.

WeatherwaxLives · 02/03/2021 21:52

skeggycaggy our local press does this too. But I'm surprised your's did in that case, surely the child's anonymity/privacy was compromised by them publishing that?!

Pepsipepsi · 02/03/2021 21:53

My local Facebook page today has posted a newspaper link to a 19 year old facing charges for "making Cat A images". Full name, address and village given. Surprised it had that much detail as he hasn't been sentenced yet, just in court.

Wellthisisjustfuckingbrilliant · 02/03/2021 21:54

@Pepsipepsi this is an older person who plead guilty today.

There's a sex offender at the end of my street according to fb .Never see him and my child certainly would never cross paths with him.Try not to worry too much there's nothing you can do but be vigilant.

Yes, true. The child had been removed so perhaps that was why?
isadoradancing123 · 02/03/2021 21:56

Why do people keep saying it would not be published when the op has said repeatedly that details have been in two newspapers

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 02/03/2021 21:56

If he is in social housing then it's likely they will know. He may have a probation officer. He may have a tag, or be barred from owing a smartphone/laptop etc. I dont think theres one set of monitoring that applies to all.

Tbh as long as you aren't in the habit of letting you own DC go, unaccompanied, into the houses of strangers, your family is quite safe.

Forewarned is forearmed. It's the ones you dont know about/aren't convicted which are the concern. The school friends dad, the caretaker at X Location, the older step brother etc.

NerrSnerr · 02/03/2021 21:56

@WeatherwaxLives The OP said he downloaded images so the victims are likely not to be known to him.

OP there'll be more paedophiles in your local area. You just won't know about them.

Shock at the fact the press have done so is not the same as saying that they wouldnt.
