I’m just going to put it out there, kangaroos scare the crap out of me

I’ve just watched a video of a kangaroo banging aggressively on some glass.

It’s scary as hell. Then I made the mistake of googling kangaroos attack.

It’s a slow work day.

Just me? Or is there a benignly normal animal that scares the bejesus out of you.

Kangaroos are repulsive, I've always loathed them. They look like an experiment that went wrong. They make me shudder Shock.
I can't bear any ape or monkey either, hideous things.j

notacooldad · 24/02/2021 23:36

I don't think you need to worry too much about this unless you live in the Australian Bush
You don't have to live in Bush to see kangaroos in Australia!
They are lovely. Even my son with his too cool for school attitude softens when we see them!

Wellthisisallfuckingmarvellous · 24/02/2021 23:44

As much as I am into body positivity what’s with their tiny hands? They aren’t even paw like.

Kangaroos are terrifying when you realise their true size, which it's easy to underestimate. I also find their faces disturbing. They look like a rabbit/donkey/man hybrid.

Oh my god I need to sleep. I’ve opened Pandora’s Box.

“It's the way they jump, it's so unexpected”

Was Kanga excised from your copy of Winnie the Pooh or something?

Providora · 24/02/2021 23:55

@Itscoldouthere

I like them but can understand, when travelling in Australia years ago we stayed in our camper van in a nature reserve, awoke early to see kangaroos running around outside, really close to us, they were amazing, but getting close to them was scary, they are so big and powerful, mind you I’m a bit scared of cows up close, so maybe big animals aren’t for me!
They don't run anywhere!

The big red ones are indeed enormous but the Eastern Greys more commonly seen in the outskirts of the major cities aren't very big and are quite adorable. Kangaroos have the prettiest long eyelashes!

Shinyletsbebadguys · 24/02/2021 23:58

I was vaguely aware that they can be nasty buggers but then so can badgers and I'm less likely to meet a kangaroo wandering the streets of essex.

I shall keep my fear for the secret badger invasion being planned.

EBearhug · 24/02/2021 23:59

spent entire road trip across the nullabar freaking out about rogue camels running out in front of the van.

That's a bloody long time to be worrying about them. I remember the bus took forever. (Might have been 2.5 days or something, but the landscape never changes. I loved Adelaide just because it wasn't the bus any more.)

Shinyletsbebadguys · 25/02/2021 00:01

Actually come to think of it a goose attacked my father and a donkey nearly got my mother ...or it could have been the other way around I'm hazy on which parent was running away from which animal (I'm honestly not being snarky , both occurred ) so in retrospect the kangaroos are the least of my worries.

Wellthisisallfuckingmarvellous · 25/02/2021 00:01

@Shinyletsbebadguys I’m sorry to tell you the other day on Facebook a woman in the Uk had a badger letting himself in via the cat-flap and he tried to get on her bed. I shall not post the link too triggering.

My father was always wary of attack geese. A colleague was attacked by a goose when he was cycling to work.

FossilisedFanny · 25/02/2021 00:03

@Shinyletsbebadguys I hate to worry you but I was walking down our road ages ago , looked down and a badger was walking right next to me ! I was so shocked to see it in broad daylight and it was huge .

Oh forgot to say , I’m in Essex too

FlyNow · 25/02/2021 00:05

So true OP, I'm Australian and I've seen heaps of roos but the first time I saw a really muscly one I was like Shock. As I'm sure you know they wouldn't attack another animal including humans as they eat grass.

However they will defend themselves.

They are very good swimmers, if attacked by a dog they will lead the dog to water, swim out, and drown the dog if it follows.

Shinyletsbebadguys · 25/02/2021 00:07

Told you ! Clearly the invasion is starting.

Clearly none of you wish me sleep tonight ...but I haven't got a cat flap thankfully. Grin

I'm beginning to wish the kangaroos were the animal I might meet on the street in Essex.

Wellthisisallfuckingmarvellous · 25/02/2021 00:10

They try to drown dogs??

Jesus Christ what is going on. I need to sleep I swear if I now dream a freaking roo drowned my beautiful tiny stupid dog I shall be most distressed.

@Shinyletsbebadguys he stole her keys and let himself in.

I jest.

@iklboo

Chimps & mandrills are scary as all fuck. Known killers, meat eaters & use tools. Also hunt in packs. Terrifying. Chimps attack to maim & disable - eyes, face, hands.
as I understand it they go for the sensitive areas because they have enough 'theory of mind' to understand that this will cause the maximum pain and distress, they also go for the genitals for the same reason
AlwaysLatte · 25/02/2021 00:11

I've walked through parks and fields with kangaroos, fed some by hand, and I didn't see any aggression. Banging on the glass sounds very freaky, I may now see them in a different light!

about two yes ago one summer evening in an urban area I heard a scrambling sound on the pavement and turned around to see 2 adult badges bowling towards me, it briefly occurred to me that they might attack me but luckily they just sped on by 😳

costco · 25/02/2021 00:16

When I was 8, there was a zoo enclosure in Brisbane zoo that you could walk into. A large male kangaroo jumped on me, claws out, and I have the scar on my arm to this day. So, quite a rational fear.

smellyolddog · 25/02/2021 00:16

My DS hates dolphins, he shouts at David Attenborough programmes, what's with the stupid clicking and squeaking and the smug attitudes, ohhh look at me I can flip.

I'd honestly never given them a second thought but since his bizarre dislike I can see his point.

Shinyletsbebadguys · 25/02/2021 00:16

Well see now I need ddog to stay away from kangaroos to ensure she can protect me from the badgers .

Actually that won't work , she is the worst guard dog in the world and would definitely follow a kangaroo into water.

Sigh, good thing we have ds2 who is 5 and full of pent up energy. Good luck to any badger , kangaroo or anything else that tries to get past that 3 ft instrument of terror who is in a fuzzy pug onesie to confuse the situation

Ok...that's definitely enough internet for me tonight Grin if ever there was a thought process that told me I should sleep Grin
