Your favourite TV series that no one else you know has seen

Currently unable to sleep so thought I would ask others!

I feel like I’ve seen everything that’s regularly recommended but I have a few TV shows I love that rarely ever come up in discussions. I figured I would share mine and maybe others could share theirs and we can all find something new to us!

The main ones that come to mind for me are:
Silicon Valley
Barry
Carnivale
Party Dowb

Almost all HBO so harder to get hold of but all absolutely brilliant and worth seeking out.

Also 30 Rock and The Shield - these come up more often but still not widely seen in the UK

What are yours?

@Furrybutts

You Rang 'Ma Lord. Absolutely love it and have watched all 4 series countless times. Never gets old.
Oh I used to love that! I can never say 'fornicator' the proper way now! Grin
DoctorYang · 24/02/2021 08:42

ALso agree with This Country! I only found it a couple of weeks ago and watched the lot. Charlie and Daisy May Cooper are just so brilliant. To the PP who wrote how they would be getting on during the pandemic - spot on!

Great idea for a thread @SinkGirl! I look forward to finding some gems on the back of this.

Grandma’s House. From the BBC tenish years ago. Simon Amstel plays himself, Rebecca Front is his mum, Linda Basset is the titular Grandma, James Smith (from The Thick of It, reunited with Rebecca Front and Vincent Franklin- Nicola and Stewart) amongst several others. It’s brilliant because it’s hilarious, but there’s an under tone of tragedy too. All of both series are on YouTube. S1E1 .

My other one is Lead Balloon, also a BBC comedy from the late noughties. Jack Dee plays a version off himself, playing a washed-up comedian trying to scrape a living fronting crappy cooperate Christmas parties and trying to get on panel shows.... but he can’t even write his own jokes (and his writer is far more charismatic and funny than he is!) All of all four series are on YouTube too. S1E1 .

Don't Trust the B in Apartment 23.

It's amazing. Only two seasons though 😭

Subwaylunch · 24/02/2021 08:46

The Good Fight is even better than The Good Wife
Ransom is fantastic
The Rookie
NCIS LA
Blue Bloods

HunterHearstHelmsley · 24/02/2021 08:48

Oh, and Dirty Sexy Money. Utterly bonkers. Donald Sutherland. Loved it.

RachelRosie · 24/02/2021 09:00

POSE - one friend has watched but other than that I recommend it to everyone. Has similarities to It's A Sin, so hopefully get a few more viewers now.

Loved Sweet Magnolia's last year on Netflix. No else had heard of it. Was a bit twee but nice to switch off everything that is going on outside.

Big This is Us fan here. Watched the latest one last night and cried all the way through!

Pieceofpurplesky · 24/02/2021 09:02

Ghost Whisperer
The Last Train
In the Flesh

I liked Lead Balloon but it's very much a poor man's Curb Your Enthusiasm which has been mentioned a couple of time

To the poster who mentioned Frasier, I assume you must be very young, that's one of the most successful shows of all time isn't it Grin

Notreallyawaitress · 24/02/2021 09:09

Banshee - very violent and loads of shagging Grin

WhoAteAllTheWotsits · 24/02/2021 09:09

Another vote for Lucifer, black books, The Shield.

Also: Shetland (very disturbing but brilliant), Sirens from a few years back - comedy about the emergency services.

The haunting of hill house, I also loved White Collar, The Society, living with yourself, 60 Days in - all of these on Netflix

Daisy829 · 24/02/2021 09:10

Fab thread thanks. There’s loads on here I’ve not seen.
Loved winners & losers and dirty sexy money.
2 recommendations from me Friends from college which is on Netflix I think (or prime!) also the west wing which I know was quite popular but it’s very good.

crochetmonkey74 · 24/02/2021 09:13

Carnivale
American Gothic- I LOVED THIS
Millennium
Taken - A miniseries - not the Liam Neeson film

Can you tell I like spooky stuff?

Wellshellsbells · 24/02/2021 09:14

The U.S Office!

I loved Millennium. Haven't seen that mentioned in years.
LBOCS2 · 24/02/2021 09:20

Oh yes, Dirty Sexy Money.

A couple mentioned before - Hart of Dixie, Dharma and Greg, Grimm.

Along with Coupling (really young Jack Davenport!) and Bedlam.

Notreallyawaitress · 24/02/2021 09:26

@AiryFairy1
The Blacklist- James Spader, FBI - currently running 8th season on Sky - just love it 😍

I’m persevering with The Blacklist but only in the hope that they kill off Elizabeth Grin - probably the most annoying character on tv. I think it jumped the shark with the exit of Mr Kaplan, but occasionally still has brilliant episodes

MechantGourmet · 24/02/2021 09:32

@BlackAmericanoNoSugar
@Graphista

I don't really watch television at all...but I do watch The Expanse, can't get enough of it.

It's absolutely brilliant- intense, condensed storytelling that assumes the viewer is of reasonable intelligence; properly developed characters (including many, many strong female characters, definitely passes the bechdel test); twists, turns, suspense, and cliffhangers- but plotlines are properly explained and tied up; Shohreh Aghdashloo's costumes!; Naomi's hair!; its own creole language...

It's "sci-fi" but really it's all about the characters (as all the best sci-fi is, let's face it) and they are so well written.
Drummer!
Amos!
Miller!

Did I mention how good it is?

As soon as a season is finished, I rewatch it, and I am someone that last watched television 15 years ago.

I am a sci-fi but though Wink

MechantGourmet · 24/02/2021 09:34

nut, I'm nuts about sci-fi...

supercritter · 24/02/2021 09:38

Weeds
Sunset beach
Revenge
Enjoying Lie to Me atm

AiryFairy1 · 24/02/2021 09:39

@Notreallyawaitress yes maybe you’re right about Elizabeth (I’ve noticed myself shouting at the tv more frequently!), and the earlier seasons were much better - think I’m just a bit overinvested after ALL this time 😂

grapewine · 24/02/2021 09:42
@grapewine I LOVED B5. It was fantastic
So glad to see love for the show! I'm rewatching it currently. Great storytelling and characters.

MechantGourmet · 24/02/2021 09:42

Anyway, it's lovely to see so many old series on here, that I actually liked!

Secret Life Of Us- loved this first time it was shown, may have to watch if it's on Prime. I was same age as the characters then though... Grin

Ultraviolet- I enjoyed this, but can't believe they cancelled after only one series.

Love Soup- the Tamsin Grieg series? I really enjoyed that, but she's incredible, and just wonderful in everything she's done.

Spaced, Black Books, Green Wing- I would say that whilst brilliant, they are all really well known!

I also watche'd Borgen, but I think that's quite well known too.

Mrsjayy · 24/02/2021 09:50

don't know anyone in real life who's seen Good Omens, which I find astonishing as it's bloody brilliant. I keep mentioning to people, but hardly anyone has Amazon Prime so they haven't seen it

I watched it on Prime isn't it brilliant. It did go to BBc2 so I think it will be on iPlayer if anybody fancies it.

bluebluezoo · 24/02/2021 09:53

I find it weird how few people have prime. I find it better than netflix personally, plus the next day free delivery is a huge bonus!
