Your favourite TV series that no one else you know has seen

Currently unable to sleep so thought I would ask others!

I feel like I’ve seen everything that’s regularly recommended but I have a few TV shows I love that rarely ever come up in discussions. I figured I would share mine and maybe others could share theirs and we can all find something new to us!

The main ones that come to mind for me are:
Silicon Valley
Barry
Carnivale
Party Dowb

Almost all HBO so harder to get hold of but all absolutely brilliant and worth seeking out.

Also 30 Rock and The Shield - these come up more often but still not widely seen in the UK

What are yours?

Deutschland 83/86 (soon to be an '89 as well) on Walter Presents/ Channel 4. Beautifully shot and acted spy shenanigans in a 1980s East Germany where everybody is surprisingly stylish and sexy Grin. As it's subtitled, you can't check your phone during it as you'll miss an entire convoluted plot twist and never catch up with who's about to cause WW3.

Chernobyl (although this was supposed to be quite popular, but I've never met anyone else who's seen it)

On the strength of those two^, I think I may well be into The Americans, from reading this thread.

YY to The Marvellous Mrs Maisel- funny, sharp, feminist and great clothes.

Excited to hear people talking about a recent episode of This is Us- I watched 4 episodes of the latest season, and then they seemed to stop for a while (presumably because of Covid?) Are there more now? Since it had pretty much gone into real time, I'm looking forward to the US election seen from the point of view of a black political family in Philadelphia!

The Secret Life of Us and Attachments

WannabemoreWeaver · 25/02/2021 21:39

@LunaNorth

Call My Agent - a French comedy drama set in a Paris acting agency. It has big-name guest stars (think Juliette Binoche, Monica Bellucci), a crackling script and is so perfectly Parisian.

I love it so, and hardly anyone will watch it - as soon as I mention the subtitles, they turn their noses up!

That is a great show - just started watching it and love it! Wish my eye bags looked so chic.

FuckyouCovid21 · 25/02/2021 22:06

@YesIlikeitto we discovered it on holiday in Tenerife of all places, it was on some weird channel in the early hours. When we got home we bought the boxset on dvd and have watched it a ridiculous amount of times. Love the balcony scenes with Denny and Alan, although Alan was an utter pig and my least favourite character. Loved Brad and Denise, he was a bit dumb for a lawyer but he was very funny, it started to tail off when quite a few main characters left. Wasn't a fan of Clarice/Clarence, Cohoe, Gerry or Katie but I did love Ivan (Tom Selleck) and Shirley's relationship

Oystercatcher2 · 25/02/2021 22:12

Friday Night Lights.
Brilliant. And nobody else seems to have seen it, even on here.

@crackofdoom We seem to have very similar taste, I loved Deutschland and Chernobyl too. I think you'll enjoy The Americans.

MarvellousMunchkin · 25/02/2021 22:41

Orphan Black

Star Fleet? Theme tune by Brian May.

On a side note, I hate dubbing and prefer subtitles but not everyone does. On Netflix you can often choose your preferred audio language and/or subtitles by going into - Wait for it - Audio and Subtitles.

Sorry if I'm stating the obvious but I know people in RL who say they won't watch something with subtitles and didn't know you could do this.

notyetamumbuttrying · 25/02/2021 22:56

@MarvellousMunchkin yes to orphan black!! I'm so glad her English accent got better over time 😂

Hello fellow Harrow fan. Literally nobody in real life has heard of it.

Also currently loving Resident Alien and nobody else seems to be.

Thighdentitycrisis · 25/02/2021 23:04

Currently into Superstore it reminds me of Parks and Rec

Gingercat86 · 25/02/2021 23:17

@anastasiakrupnik

The 100. I started watching as it's full of ex-Neighbours cast members (which no one I know watches either) but six seasons on DH and Iare still watching. It's teens do Battlestar Galactica, a sort of post-apocalyptic Hollyoaks. But good.
I love neighbours & watch it religiously!! Along with Home & Away
SinkGirl · 25/02/2021 23:18

I need to give Superstore another go - I’ve only seen the pilot. Pretty sure the creator was involved in The Office (US) which is definitely one of my favourite comedies (crappy pilot, average first season but then brilliant).

NBC have had amazing comedies in the past - at one point they had The Office, 30 Rock, Parks & Rec and Community all at the same time. That’s bonkers. Hasn’t been such great American comedy since, other than what’s on HBO. I think Barry is one of the funniest things I’ve ever seen but also dark and sad - we need more programmes like that. Series 3 would be done already if it weren’t for COVID but it seems they’ve already written series 3 and 4. Can’t wait for it.

sausageofcumberland · 25/02/2021 23:40

The Hook Up Plan on Netflix - Hilarious beautiful French escapism, plus a bonus lockdown episode at the end. I've scrolled through the thread and doesn't look like there's been a mention of it, forgive me if there has already. I thoroughly recommend it, best program of 2020 for me.
