Currently unable to sleep so thought I would ask others!

I feel like I’ve seen everything that’s regularly recommended but I have a few TV shows I love that rarely ever come up in discussions. I figured I would share mine and maybe others could share theirs and we can all find something new to us!

The main ones that come to mind for me are:
Silicon Valley
Barry
Carnivale
Party Dowb

Almost all HBO so harder to get hold of but all absolutely brilliant and worth seeking out.

Also 30 Rock and The Shield - these come up more often but still not widely seen in the UK

What are yours?

American Gods, The Expanse and Superstore

@Tazmania77

Keep remembering more! Cougar town Life in pieces - oh my days if you watch one thing I'd recommend this on amazon prime its hilarious and heart warming. Only 30 minute episodes so not too much time to watch an episode or two. Although its that good you might end it watching it all in one go!!
Cougar Town was bloody hilarious! Grin Busy Phillips was superb in that.

Brooklyn 99.

I don’t know anyone else who has watched it...

Chuck about an ordinary guy who gets a super spy brain and abilities downloaded into him like a computer. Love it so much our DC are now an age they have become obsessed and watched all eps too. Alas have never met anyone who has watched it too!

Alias - Jennifer Garner kicking a** as a CIA double agent. She of the Peppermint film fame on Netflix in 2020. Gd binge watching of 5 seasons if you found you liked it.

All Stargate, original and Atlantis.

Agree with Haven, Tru Calling and Doll House too enjoyed them all. As well as Quantum Leap, Nikita and Sapphire and Steele

Does anyone else feel the same though you really get into a series and then they end it in a way you are left WTF??? Quantum Leap and Chuck was just like that I have to admit but can still recommend both as really good if you like Sci Fi Smile

It's often a lot cheaper to buy a second hand dvd off eBay for a lot of these from somewhere like Music Magpie or World of Books than pay what Amazon and Apple want per episode or series.

womblemum · 25/02/2021 20:34

Upright.

Tim Minchin 8 parter. It’s funny and sad and sweet with beautiful music and scenery and great acting. I think it’s on Sky.

Standrewsschool · 25/02/2021 20:35

My dc love Brooklyn 99, so we have it on all the time. Actually, they probably wTch E4 more than any other terrestrial channel - Big Bang theory, Goldberg’s (and sequal), Brooklyn etc.

purrswhileheeats · 25/02/2021 20:39

I watched a series called Trophy Wife years ago (on American TV), it was proper laugh out loud funny. Brilliant cast and script, think Modern Family potential but it ended after one season Confused

Ponypizzy · 25/02/2021 20:43

The Strain, utterly bonkers but gutted they ended it before they finished the story off.

Pootle40 · 25/02/2021 20:49

Hart of Dixie.... Wade. Oh. My. God. Without a doubt the character in TV I've most fallen in love with over my entire life

One of Sharon Horgan's early shows was - and I had to look it up - Annualy Retentive

With rob bryden and Russell tovey

Even I had forgotten the name but I do remember enjoying it

TimeToStop · 25/02/2021 21:05

Leftovers - such a strange story, for the first few episodes I thought it was either genius or dreadful but then I got totally hooked and the ending is just incredible.

Feel Good, a recent comedy about a lesbian couple. It's really funny and very sweet.

I'm also a fan of Call My Agent, Succession and lots of other things mentioned on here.

snowspider · 25/02/2021 21:07

We don't have pay per view only Freeview so have probably entirely missed the point but hey ho

True Blood an HBO vampire series and as well as binge watching the series on DVD, I binge read nearly the entire series.

From when I was young, Out of the Unknown which was on TV on Wednesday nights after guides.

MarshaBradyo · 25/02/2021 21:08

The thread seems to be veering a bit off course in terms of remit

Many of the shows being mentioned at the end of the thread were HUGE when first released, award winning even. I can only guess that those posters were too young to remember the initial release or even weren't born when the shows they are talking about were first released and so don't know what buzz there was around them

Interesting.

I've seen it happen a bit with my dd who's been the one to introduce her friends/peers to shows that were massive upon initial release but are not often repeated and their parents haven't thought to introduce them to or are perhaps not fans of these shows. It can be quite funny on occasion. One memorable example was Gilmore girls which I indoctrinated dd into and she in turn passed the love onto her friends especially those in single parent families. It also meant on occasion I was bonding with her friends over obscure sci fi/fantasy series as they'd watch them at mine and get hooked.

It's like shows my parents watched that I was too young for at the time but when randomly rerun many years later I foolishly (as I was still only late teens with the arrogance of youth!) thought I'd cottoned onto something they were unaware of and would enjoy.

One such show was "citizen smith", I knew dad liked Robert Lindsay, plus both parents did stints as shop stewards and are staunch socialists so I got all evangelical, mum laughed and went to the photo albums storage and dug out a caricature a colleague of dads had done back when the show was popular with dad as "Wolfie" - I'd never seen this drawing before!

It was one of those occasions as a teen where I was made to realise fully how my parents were "real" people before they were my parents.

Now I feel old when younger people I know "discover" shows and evangelise to me about them thinking I don't know about them! One friend discovered "the upper hand" because as an eastenders fan she came across a meme I think about Kellie bright being a child actor. She then tried to tell me about it as if I'd never heard of it - it was a very popular show in our house not least as dad was head over heels for honor blackman!

It's funny how these things go isn't it?

SuperMorg · 25/02/2021 21:26

Eastbound & Down - HBO
Kenny f*ckin' Powers who's a burnt out baseball player and an absolute jerk who goes from the big league back to his small home town. I can't help loving it, he reminds me of an ex 😂 American comedy that none of our friends seem to know about.
