how do you not know anyone who hasn't seen Friday Night Dinner or This is Us for example
Depends where you live and who you mix with doesn't it? Old friends of mine I'm in touch with by phone/Facebook watch this kind of thing, where I live - bad reality tv central and they struggle to "follow" them! Suffice to say not a cultured area.
Ok that might be an exaggeration but certainly they don't follow/invest in anything beyond a basic police procedural with a clearly explained in words of no more than 2 syllables denouement. I've already seen posts on sm people saying they don't like unforgotten as it's "too complicated" and quite a few of them were completely confused by broadchurch.
Personally there are very few British shows I watch now as I find the series are too short to really get ones teeth into and there is little in the way of character development or twists or surprises - cos there isn't time in a 5 or 6 episode season!
We have AMAZING talent being produced in Britain in the entertainment industry but it isn't valued or nurtured and so often ends up migrating.
I know that's off topic and a bit deep but it really annoys me.
Also, Afterlife (2005-2006 on ITV) with Andrew Lincoln and Lesley Sharp, loved it. yep, another great show that lacked support and nurture
@Alfaix LOVED northern exposure, you and my mum are the only other people I know watched it! Also Due South, I know a few who watched it but not that many
@BlackAmericanoNoSugar yes I agree Shoreh has a wonderful voice and a magnetic acting style in my opinion. The expanse is on my list and has been for some time, my apprehension is due to my own failings as it were. I have mh issues and it can make me feel like starting a new (to me) show is a risk. Certain shows can affect me negatively so I have to be kind of careful what I watch. Eg I love criminal minds and mind hunter but I can't binge watch them as they affect my mood too much. Hard to explain
I too am a bit tired of people asking for TV suggestions and people recommending Breaking Bad I'm heartily sick of this too! It's not a show I have ANY interest in watching as I've lost loved ones to drug addiction and I don't think from the few trailers I've seen and descriptions that it's a show I would enjoy.
American Gothic- I LOVED THIS Millennium
I have NEVER come across ANYONE who's seen millennium! To the point I seriously wondered at one point if I dreamt it! Thank you IMDb for proving I didn't!
There's a couple others on mn have seen American gothic the difficulty with this one is some people have seen other films/tv with same title and it's not the right one the one I saw was this
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/AmericanGothic(1995TVseries)
Sadly only 1 series another victim of the American audiences poor taste imo.
And now 2 millennium fans! Wow! Frustratingly unavailable anywhere!
@MechantGourmet I love sci fi BECAUSE the genre tends to develop the characters and especially female characters beyond the "love interest only" crap that so often happens In other genres. AND because it credits the viewers with intelligence and common sense. We NEED more sci fi tv shows and we certainly NEED more fully rounded female characters.
Enjoying Lie to Me atm
Honestly one of my favourite shows ever! I love the psychology and real world application of psychology, when I first watched I did a lot of reading on the professor who inspired the show, who is a little more conventional than the character but not a huge amount, he challenges authority and is deeply cynical of "those in charge" just like Tim Roth's character in the show.
Soo many shows I love get bloody cancelled! Especially the sci fi ones, fringe, travelers, timeless...
I can't help but think the lack of audience which is used as the excuse for the cancellations is more due to lack of promotion and support for the shows (meaning fewer people even know it exists!) than people watching and going off it! I believe it was thanks to vocal fans stateside that we got the conclusion we deserved.
I wish viewers would at least try shows like this and not be put off by the "sci fi" tag. My mum didn't fancy this show cos it was "sci fi" luckily as it was on Netflix I could say to her to watch the jfk episodes and she loved them (being from that era) and that got her hooked and she watched from the beginning.
I think often the sci fi tag puts people off as they think it'll be "scientific" and hard to follow or "nerdy" and boring.
I'll get flamed for this (if not here then on some benefit bashing thread!)
I'm disabled and housebound, tv & film is really my only escape. So I have netflix, prime and Disney + (treated myself with Christmas money thinking that only Star Wars content would be of interest as not a Disney/schmaltz fan but there's LOADS of non schmaltzy stuff on it, even more so now the new star content which is "more adult" has been added)
I'm fortunate that I don't spend on anything much being housebound so can afford this, plus prime membership I consider well worth having as it also includes music, reading, free deliveries (on the rare occasion I need something that I can't get from Tesco) and I can choose my delivery schedule too which is important for me as I can only manage deliveries on certain days, more free kindle books than just "classics"
It's my one luxury and only costs me £13.98 a month, if I decide to stay with Disney for another year it'll be £79.90 or £7.99 a month same as prime so even with that this is only £21.97 a month, that's around £5 a week. I manage my budget well so why not?
@LondonStone aww what a lovely thing to say! White collar no matter HOW Many times I watch it the ending still gets me! Wont say more than that so as not to spoiler for people new to it. Lie to me we needed a conclusion on one particular aspect don't you think?
DH and I were obsessed with Justified - think one of my favourite programmes ever. But every time I’ve suggested it to anyone they look nonplussed!
I have justified on my list too, again haven't found anyone who's seen it so they can gimme more info on what it's like so I know if I'd like it. Eg what other shows would you say it's like?
The mentalist was good first time around, but I think it's one of the few shows I would say should have ended sooner, once a certain element of the show was...concluded I felt it ran out of steam
@Weloveoptimus I LOVED watching was a fantastic show! Except for Liza tarbuck who I can't stand in ANYTHING so fake and can't act!
Homecoming - another one on my list that I haven't been able to pick anyone's brains about
Another fan of on the up who's also said "just the one Mrs Wembley" to dd who's returned a blank face!
Another sci fi one I just thought of but might also appeal to 80's nostalgia fans
Future man
Totally bonkers and a bit, distasteful, at times but very funny and tons of 80's nostalgia. The sublime Glenne headly's last performance.
At least try it you never know, it is quite niche.
