Your favourite TV series that no one else you know has seen

Currently unable to sleep so thought I would ask others!

I feel like I’ve seen everything that’s regularly recommended but I have a few TV shows I love that rarely ever come up in discussions. I figured I would share mine and maybe others could share theirs and we can all find something new to us!

The main ones that come to mind for me are:
Silicon Valley
Barry
Carnivale
Party Dowb

Almost all HBO so harder to get hold of but all absolutely brilliant and worth seeking out.

Also 30 Rock and The Shield - these come up more often but still not widely seen in the UK

What are yours?

What We Do In The Shadows

Ghosts

Karmagoat · 24/02/2021 12:12

True Blood
Gomorrah

LaPoesieEstDansLaRue · 24/02/2021 12:14

I've seen and enjoyed quite a few things listed on here - Ghosts, The Kominsky Method, I May Destroy You (which was outstanding!)

But virtually nobody I know has seen The Marvellous Mrs Maisel or Homecoming, both on Prime, both great.

I loved Silicon Valley, Barry, Mr Robot, Succession, This Country, The Detectorists, Halt and Catch Fire (one of my most favourite series ever) and 30 Rock. I thought 30 Rock was wildly popular though? It was so, so funny.

Mine is The Left Overs, which I see a few others have - a wonderful show. I have never met anyone else who had watched it. And Action from probably 20 years ago. A dark comedy about a failing Hollywood producer, starring Jay Mohr as Peter Dragon...I remember it as very funny.

bellagogosdead · 24/02/2021 12:28

Sports Night
I have yet to meet a single person who has even heard of it!
Aaron Sorkin does a half hour comedy with Peter Krause abd Felicity Hoffman.

DesdamonasHandkerchief · 24/02/2021 12:42

You, Me and The Apocalypse, really disappointed the second season got canned. Also love Ghosts (but I think that's generally well loved and has strong viewing figures) there's a bit of a Matthew Baynton theme going on here!

mycomfyunflatteringjumper · 24/02/2021 12:44

@WhoAteAllTheWotsits

Another vote for Lucifer, black books, The Shield.

Also: Shetland (very disturbing but brilliant), Sirens from a few years back - comedy about the emergency services.

The haunting of hill house, I also loved White Collar, The Society, living with yourself, 60 Days in - all of these on Netflix

I loved sirens! An absolute crying shame it was dropped

30 Rock wasn’t shown much here in the U.K., and hasn’t been consistently on streaming either - I think it’s on All 4 now and sometimes comes up on Netflix I think.

Years ago my answer would have been the US Office because hardly anyone here had seen it but it’s on Netflix now so I’m seeing lots of people talk about it. Same with Its Always Sunny

Homecoming is absolutely storming, we loved it. Julia Roberts was a revelation.

Anyone watching the Snowpiercer series? Awful film & the series is quite preposterous in places but the concept entices me & if you get to series 2 (which is on now), you're rewarded by Sean Bean in some amazing suits & obviously having fun in his role as the twisted, bombastic, sexy villain of the show.

Y to the following:
Carnivale - gutted when it got cancelled
True Detective S1 - Matthew McConaughey was sublime
Dark Place - subsequently love anything with or by Richard Ayoade, Matt Berry & Alice Lowe
American Gothic - back in the day!
Spaced - loved Mark Heap's tortured artist
Dark, Detecorists & This Country - live near to the area & it's true to life!
American Gods - Ian McShane is lush & awesome theme music
Tim & Eric/Dr Steve Brule - hilarious madness

Also really liked:
Deadwood - so much swearing!! & Ian McShane to ogle admire
Toast
Lemony Snicket series

Bonfire of Destiny - a French series on Netflix or Prime, was beautifully done.

Grenlei · 24/02/2021 13:10

@HauntedDishcloth yes to Snowpiercer! It is a bit bonkers but I'm enjoying it.
I'm finding Sean Bean oddly attractive (he's never done it for me before - I blame lockdown, haven't seen a man in a suit for over 12 months Grin)

MechantGourmet · 24/02/2021 14:00

@crochetmonkey74 made me remember another series:
Strange, from 2002. It had Jeffrey from Coupling, Samantha Janus, and Ian Richardson, and it was about a defrocked priest uncovering and banishing demons.
There were apparently only six episodes Sad

SingToTheSky · 24/02/2021 14:20

Oh I think I may have seen that or at least heard of it at the time. I loved Coupling (except the ones without Jeff). Still got a soft spot for Jack davenport!

crochetmonkey74 · 24/02/2021 15:04

Pieceofpurplesky

I LOVED In the Flesh- no one else I know has ever watched it!!!

Oh Yeah! Strange! I liked that one,

There was something similar with a woman with gorgeous curly auburn hair- it's on the edge of my brain and I can't catch it. She was helping a policeman maybe but was quite witchy- think velvet dress, curly hair and chokers (90s)

Standrewsschool · 24/02/2021 16:01

@Fandangoes

a really old one - The Happy Apple, it had Lesley Ash working in a marketing agency, I loved it but I have never met anyone else who watched it
I remember this. It was about a small advertising agency. They couldn’t afford to do large surveys, and then discovered that Lesley Ash was the perfect average character,
Standrewsschool · 24/02/2021 16:03

“On the Up” - with Denis Waterman.

‘Just the One Mrs Wembly’

LaPoesieEstDansLaRue · 24/02/2021 16:27

Waves to @Blibbyblobby Nice to hear from another Homecoming fan! Hope there's a third series 🤞

MarkRuffaloCrumble · 24/02/2021 16:32

I always say “just the one Mrs Wembley” and my kids have no idea what I’m on about Grin

peoplearepeople · 24/02/2021 16:36

Raising Hope - about a young teenage father and his weird family. Made by the same people as My name is Earl but so much funnier. Our family rewatch this really regularly as it's so funny.

Prisoner cell block H. - The original 80's one. I refuse to watch the remake because I love the original so much. I really love how focused it is on women and the inequality they face. It had a reputation for wobbly sets etc, but I always felt like the storylines were strong enough not to notice.

Cobra Kai - Just really great feel good family tv. I was never a massive fan of the Karate kid movie but love this. Manages to have a great 80's feel despite being set now.

Agree with Barry being really good. A similar show that has the same kind of dark comedy feel called The patriot is on amazon prime. I think Barry fans would like it!

ElaineMarieBenes · 24/02/2021 16:37

@duckme The thick of it is brilliant but everyone I know watched it too.

However @bluebluezoo I absolutely loved Sleepers and don’t know anyone else who watched it (Michael Havers and Warren Clark were brilliant)

I adored ‘Any Human Heart’ and don’t know many who have seen it (book is also very good!)

mrsfeatherbottom · 24/02/2021 16:47

Did anyone else watch an American programme some years ago called 'Don't trust the B** in Apartment 3b'?

It was hilarious and I have never met a single person who saw it. Think it was on E4.

Madickenxx · 24/02/2021 16:56

Love & Anarchy (Netflix) has been mentioned already but really funny

Please like me (Prime but not sure it's available in the uk atm) was great and I'd love to re-watch it

Quicksand (Netflix) is brilliant and well worth a watch
