Prince Philip

Just head that Prince Charles has been to visit him in hospital due to ‘exceptional circumstances’. He’s never visited him in hospital before and apparently left looking emotional. It doesn’t look good does it? I wonder how this will play out given the pandemic?

@YouokHun

I wish him a speedy recovery and a comfortable time in hospital. I feel for his family but I confess that I am very envious of him getting visitors. My father is days from death from cancer and we can’t visit him. For my mother 55 years of marriage will end in a phone call, not by his side holding his hand. I wouldn’t wish this torture on Prince Phillip or anyone else.
Very sorry you and your family are going through this and not allowed to visit, it’s wrong Flowers
MechantGourmet · 20/02/2021 19:21

I am hoping he makes it to 100 and gets a telegram from HM. She could deliver it herself! Grin

MechantGourmet · 20/02/2021 19:23

@YouokHun I'm so sorry, and I really feel for you that you can't be with him Thanks

@CeibaTree

Not many people live that long, PC and his siblings have been so lucky to have both their parents well into old age themselves.

@ParkheadParadise

By the time I was 40 I had lost both parents and a child.

Flowers I'm so sorry to hear that...... Sad

@Youokhun Flowers for you too. Sorry to hear your dad is so ill.

littlepattilou · 20/02/2021 19:25

@GrandTheftWalrus

I've seen comments on fb saying he should hurry up and die.

Take away the fact he is a royal and that is someone's husband, father, grandfather etc.

It will be a sad day for for royals when he does pass away.

'Hurry up and die?!' Angry

Some people are just putrid aren't they?

Still, it's only to be expected from some of the stupid, small-minded people you see on facebook and twitter (and certain message forums...)

They think they're funny, clever, and cool hating on the Royals like this .. In actual fact they just come across as incredibly stupid, and very simple.

DareIask · 20/02/2021 19:25

@YouokHun so sorry, that's so sad

Thanks
Feedingthebirds1 · 20/02/2021 19:25

It's a sobering thought that unless you're over 68 years old, Elizabeth is the only monarch there's ever been during your lifetime. And Philip the only consort.

Losing a husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather hurts. Whoever you are. I hope he comes out fighting fit again, but if it's not to be, that the end is peaceful and painless.

So sorry to read this. I hope when the time comes, that it's peaceful for your dad.

Take care of yourself Thanks

OvaHere · 20/02/2021 19:26

Everything health wise is potentially serious when you're 99. We know that very elderly people can be admitted for something fairly minor but go downhill very quickly. For whatever reason they often don't tend to thrive very well following admittance. I've seen this in my own family.

We'll just have to see what evolves over the coming days. I hope they are all given some privacy from the press. Despite knowing he is 'problematic' in all kinds of ways I can't help but quite like Philip and his steadfast devotion to duty, ditto The Queen.

When they are both gone it will be a significant end of an era and a little sad for that reason. Due to the length of her reign there are people significantly older than me who have lived their entire lives with her on the throne.

mn red hot on the delete button Thanks

EdithWeston · 20/02/2021 19:27

@MadinMarch

Just a thought, but if he dies, it'll be really difficult for the RF to choose exactly which 30 people will be able to attend his funeral. This will be such a great dilemma for the RF, but their choices could be the making or breaking of them.
The actual funerals (internments) of royals are small, private affairs so I expect that is what they would do.

Then there will be a royal ceremonial memorial service at some time in the future when it is possible to have a bigger event.

But I hope it doesn't come to that. In the next months there are 2 more great grand children on the way, his 100th birthday in June and also the Queen's Platinum Jubilee is coming up (in the 70th year of her reign now, actual anniversary 6/02/22)

@Chailatteplease thank you. You’re right, it is wrong (though I do understand why the rules are in place) and many people believe that government guidelines of being allowed to visit at the end of life are adhered to, but if there is any kind of active treatment (which there often is up to the last moments) then visiting isn’t allowed. Not only this, information is scant and comfort for those dying alone or receiving devastating news about their health, is also pretty much zero - it is inhumane. So if the Royal family can get round this at such a difficult time then they truly are very fortunate and so is Prince Philip to have family contact during illness.

Signalbox · 20/02/2021 19:31

if my df was 99 and in hospital i would be visiting

I think most hospitals aren't allowing visits atm unless the person is expected to die imminently. I do NHS test and trace and have spoken to numerous people with close relatives in hospital (some very elderly) and none of them have been permitted to visit. Some of them have not even been able to speak to their relatives via the telephone. It's very sad.

I found the whole Harry needing to request a meeting with his Grandmother and all the related nonsense quite bizarre. With all that in mind, do you think they really love each other

I think when your grans the queen and it’s not a social visit, but a state matt, then it’s just very different. But I recall watching a documentary and Harry said he thinks of her as the queen. Not gran. And she’s very very much in charge. She’s the boss.

I’m sure they all do love each other though and there is lots of social time they used to all spend together, it’s a very close knit family in that regard, outsiders are not easily welcomed in. It’s just not something we would understand. I think if anything was to happen to any of them they would all be devastated.

Philip and the queen though are pretty much national treasures. The queen due to her work ethic and dedication, Philip because of the things he says, which are often so outrageous they are amusing, although clearly not always. Yes there are a small minority who are opposed and don’t like him, but generally they are both regarded with some warmth.

ImAncient · 20/02/2021 19:34

Im sorry for people who are currently going through this. 💐 And for the royals he’s still a loved family whoever he is.

A friends mum has been in hospital & has been allowed in with one other sibling as it’s end of life.

BananaPop2020 · 20/02/2021 19:35

Whatever your views on H&M, you can’t deny their actions this week have been bad taste and clunky given whats going on with Philip.

I stand corrected, thank you.
So Harry would not have to quarantine here, and DOES have "special dispensation" regarding travel..........hmm 😬

Inthevirtualwaitingroom · 20/02/2021 19:37

you cannot say H & M have behaved with bad taste this week in particular!
it was probably timed that way in advance, a coincidence

poptartqueen · 20/02/2021 19:37

@Benjispruce2

It’s a matter of time for them both. But given that he walked in I am expecting him to come home.
That means absolutely nothing. People can be fine and walking around despite their advancing years and seem perfectly normal and be dead within 24 hours.

Thank you @KettleWentBang. You can only visit when all active treatment has ceased but the final moments often come when some form of active treatment is still happening. Final moments are often not long enough to get to hospital and are not always completely obvious so unless you are close at hand anyway (as you might be during non-Covid times) it’s highly likely that you won’t see your loved one. This is something a lot of people don’t realise is happening to people because they think that it is simply a case of government guidelines allowing it.
