Prince Philip

Just head that Prince Charles has been to visit him in hospital due to ‘exceptional circumstances’. He’s never visited him in hospital before and apparently left looking emotional. It doesn’t look good does it? I wonder how this will play out given the pandemic?

Ugh. Some of you lot remind me of circling vultures.
Yes.

Phillip: I'm not dead yet!

They’ve just taken a soundbite from Camilla. She’s hardly likely to say ‘he’s really not very good’.

Being asked was expected and predictable so she could easily have avoided the question and deflected.

Thing is Edward said he was getting better and then he was transferred hospitals.

And you have an issue with this because...?

Not necessarily a bad sign to be transferred between hospitals. With no information to go on, all you can do is make an average assumption so it’s fair to think he took a turn for the worse. It’s also fair to say that the average 99 year old wouldn’t be expected to be having certain procedures or treatments, and that being in hospital for so long considering he has access to excellent home care isn’t a good sign. However, it could be that due to the pandemic people coming and going to Windsor Castle was deemed a high risk that couldn’t be agreed. 🤷🏻‍♀️
Roussette · 03/03/2021 18:12

I have to say... much as the public would like to think that PPhillip is giving them hell in hospital about any old thing, and kicking up a stink about the BBC Scotland faux pas... when a man is that age, it really is not like that.
It's a nice thought but honestly not real. He is 99 years old, very poorly and it's doubtful that he is even conscious to be honest.
I am not saying this to be controversial, I have in my life nursed two elderly parents, and it is so different to how we want it to be. We just want a person of that age to be comfortable and at peace.

Anne1958 · 03/03/2021 18:12

Christ, someone at BBC Scotland is looking at the end of their broadcasting career. That’s shocking

Many years ago someone mistakenly announced that the Queen had died and they then lost their job.

SugarfreeBlitz · 03/03/2021 18:13

Well someone's for the high jump then!

I thought that was the Queen Mother?

We cannot know, you’re right, and it’s morbid & intrusive to speculate, OFC. Generally speaking my thoughts, In his shoes, or any royal shoes, would be more concerned about being over treated because of my status, then the normal danger of being denied treatment in a purely age basis (which is probably much more rational).

I’ve wondered sometimes whether attempts to revive P Diana were unnecessarily protracted.

I suppose that is just the corollary for getting preferential treatment all of your life, but they are all human beings and I hope they’re all allowed a gentle passing when their ends all eventually come.

SugarfreeBlitz · 03/03/2021 18:23

He might have his feet up at home for all we know....

MsFogi · 03/03/2021 18:24

Poor person at BBC Scotland - that must have been a stomach-lurching moment when they realised what they had done!
I suspect that the RF will release further news about Prince Philip's health on 8th/9th to overshadow the release of the Oprah interview.

PicsInRed · 03/03/2021 18:26

@Cactus1982

Apparently BBC Scotland have just accidentally broadcast part of Philip’s obituary in the middle of Alex Salmond’s trial. It’s all over Twitter. Either someone has pressed the wrong button, or an announcement of his death is imminent.
Wowser. Well it may not mean anything concrete about the health of DoE, but it sure means they're all ready to go on an announcement - more than usual. They either know something is imminent or have information enough to very strongly suspect it.

I know, Roussette, but it was a nice image all the same Smile

While looking for the text (still can't find it) I noticed that a Sydney newspaper did the same thing online recently ... wonder if it was a pure accident or a mischievous republican?

PicsInRed · 03/03/2021 18:29

Will BBC Scotland now have to rewrite the offending slice of obituary? Surely they won't still go with that "pre-released" version? 🤔

Anne1958 · 03/03/2021 18:30

Yes. You’re correct.

I think a lot of what we do to save people is unnecessarily protracted and not always in the person’s best interests. In an emergency we usually do everything possible to get them stable, breathing and comfortable before then looking into what might have been kinder.

If Philip has capacity then he will be treated as he wishes. If he doesn’t, then I think keeping him comfortable and pain free is the most appropriate care. Despite his status, and considering his age, I think his doctors would agree.

Is he likely to be conscious as asked above? Probably not or probably not for long periods. Coherent in the time he is awake? Also probably not. Feisty? Let’s at least hope we are all able to hang onto that for as long as we can.

Cactus1982 · 03/03/2021 18:31

It was a black and white clip of a young Philip at some kind of ceremony with a voice over talking about a conversation he’d had with him. Then it froze.

StanfordPines · 03/03/2021 18:33

The news channels will have his obit on standby. They always do anyway, for all royals.

I would imagine that his might be ready to roll, not because they know anything we don’t but because he’s a 99 year old man in hospital.

JustLyra · 03/03/2021 18:39

I actually think if Philip was aware of the BBC Scotland error he'd have laughed. He'd know exactly the panic and ructions that will have caused in BBC corridors.

normalnormas · 03/03/2021 18:40

The morning herald made a similar mistake didn't they ?

AlternativePerspective · 03/03/2021 18:54

The morbid speculation on here is revolting.

Even if people have had loved ones in similar conditions, you have no idea what is going on unless you are actually there, because one persons life is never the same as another’s.

When I was in hospital a couple of years ago there were 90 plus year olds who were very seriously ill and yet perfectly conscious.

He has a stent following a blocked artery. Developing an infection would therefore already make him susceptible to endocarditis or at the very least for his heart to be weakened. It therefore stands to reason that he would be transferred to a major cardiac hospital.

If I get any kind of e.g. chest infection I am to contact my cardiologist, and if things get worse I am to be blue-lighted to that hospital where if necessary. Will be transferred to Papworth. This is the way things progress. That doesn’t mean I will be unconscious or not have capacity, these things take on different forms.

I was perfectly conscious the night I had to be defibrilated and then rushed to ICU, and I had conversations with the nurses, and when I asked for sedation I was told I couldn’t have any because if I lost consciousness they needed to know if it was because of my low BP or because of sedation therefore I had to be awake while they inserted neck lines, central lines, etc etc. And when i asked if I was going to die they couldn’t give me a straight answer.

So stop speculating on someone’s condition you know absolutely nothing about other than from the vulture press who give half the facts and then make up the rest.

I would wager £1,000 there is a greater probability of him coming out driving a carriage than there is of him lying in one.
